“He’s like the dark mirror image of what Max could’ve become”: George Miller’s Furiosa Hid a Key Detail in Plain Sight That is a Love Letter to Mel Gibson’s Mad Max
Image
George Miller’s Mad Max franchise is one of the most renowned action movie series of all time. The franchise’s recent addition, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, featuring Chris Hemsworth and Anya Taylor-Joy, serves as a prequel that adds to the popularity of the post-apocalyptic franchise. Despite having mixed reviews, fans had a great time watching the film on the big screen.

A still from Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Credits: Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.

However, a fan has pointed out a new detail in the prequel that has been hiding in plain sight for all this time. This sinister secret exposed minute but remarkable contrasts between the two movies, illustrating the variations in what might have happened if Mel Gibson’s Mad Max had given in to his demons.

This detail from the 2024 film has got the fandom excited, as they failed to see this striking detail in the movie,...

‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ Blu-ray Review
Image
Stars: Jason Momoa, Patrick Wilson, Amber Heard, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Randall Park, Dolph Lundgren, Temuera Morrison, Martin Short, Nicole Kidman | Written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick | Directed by James Wan

Directed by James Wan, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is both a direct sequel to 2018’s Aquaman (also directed by Wan) and also the fifteenth and final film in the Dceu (the DC Extended Universe). As such, it does the occasional bit of floundering, but it just about treads water, thanks to a mostly seaworthy plot and suitably salty character work.

The plot picks up a few years after the events of the first film, with Arthur Curry / Aquaman (Jason Momoa) now married to Mera (Amber Heard), raising a young son, Arthur Jr. and dividing his time between ruling as the King of Atlantis (complete with shiny orange armour), and fighting crime on the surface world. However, there’s an old enemy waiting in the wings,...

Black Manta’s Black Trident In Aquaman 2 Explained
Image
Black Manta is shown to carry the Black Trident in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. The Black Trident contains dark magic, which Black Manta uses in his attempt to destroy Aquaman and his family. While Aquaman's Trident of Atlan is likely more powerful, Black Manta's trident is not to be underestimated, as it contains immense dark magic - though wielding the weapon comes e at great personal cost.

Black Manta wields a black trident in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, a pwoerful Dceu weapon with a complicated comics backstory. Black Manta is well-known as one of Aquaman's arch-enemies in the comics, a sea-faring mercenary wearing a high-tech suit to battle the King of Atlantis. 2018's Aquaman saw David Kane, a.k.a. Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), make his cinematic debut, with David holding Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) responsible for his father's death and seeking revenge - a premise that...

Aquaman 2 Villain: Black Manta Powers & Comics History Explained
Image
Black Manta returns as the central threat in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, more powerful and intimidating than before, seeking vengeance against Arthur Curry and his kingdom. Black Manta is a formidable warrior with extensive training in both land and sea combat, and his suit makes him even more dangerous. It's equipped with deadly weapons, enables underwater breathing, and grants him superhuman strength. Black Manta's origin story has changed throughout the comics, but in the film, he is driven by a cycle of vengeance and hatred with Aquaman, and his use of the Black Trident, a powerful and cursed weapon, plays a significant role in Aquaman 2.

Black Manta, played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, is the Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom villain, with a long and storied history in the comics and Dceu. While the aquatic villain was a side antagonist in the previous film, he is the central threat in...

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom: How Does the Dceu Franchise End?
Image
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is a lackluster sequel that fails to provide a satisfying end to Momoa's solo movie arc that began in 2018. The film explores themes of family, revenge, and the importance of protecting the Earth from climate change, but doesn't offer anything new or groundbreaking. Despite its disappointing performance and low critic scores, the film serves as a paint-by-number superhero movie with a predictable "let's save the world" ending.

The Dceu is dead. Again. We thought it had died with The Flash movie, but it has lingered, zombie-like, through the new Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. But what is this Jason Momoa sequel, and how could it possibly cap off the already long-dead Dceu before James Gunn's Dcu takes over? It may come as no surprise that it does what it came to do and leaves everyone alone. But it does it with a lot of colors.

‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ Review
Image
Patrick Wilson as Orm and Jason Momoa as Aquaman in ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ (Photo Courtesy Warner Bros Pictures/ & © DC Comics)

Color me surprised twice over. I missed the press screening of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, the closing chapter of the DC Extended Universe, and ventured to a theater to check out a screening in IMAX on Christmas Day. The lobby was packed with customers, most of whom were going to see The Color Purple on its opening day. Given how much I’ve forgotten random stuff recently, I’ll go with that as the excuse for why I wasn’t expecting so many people to be watching movies on December 25th. That was surprise number one. Surprise number two, Warner Bros. Pictures’ Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom wasn’t a complete disaster.

Sure, it’s not going to earn a spot in the Top 10 (out of 15) Dceu films.

Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom Fails To Justify Why The Justice League Are Missing
Image
Warning: This article contains Spoilers for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom disappoints viewers by not featuring the Justice League, leaving only Aquaman and his Atlantean allies to defeat the villain. The League's absence in the film is a plot hole, as their presence would be warranted given the global threat posed by Black Manta's actions. This is not the first time the Justice League has been absent from world-threatening conflicts in other Dceu films, making their absence in Lost Kingdom a missed opportunity for a final adventure.

The Justice League is nowhere to be found in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, ending the DC Extended Universe franchise with the latest instance of this problem. The Dceu timeline is set to be rebooted into the DC Universe, whose first properties will be 2024’s animated series Creature Commandos and 2025’ Superman: Legacy, making Lost Kingdom the franchise’s...

‘Aquaman 2’ Ending Explained & Movie Summary: Is This The End Of DC’s Cinematic Universe?
Image
Back in 2011, DC Comics went through a line-wide re-launch known as ‘New 52,’ which streamlined their releases and revamped the entire overarching narrative to attract newer readers. The re-launch was marked by an unnecessarily edgy sensibility and mistreatment of established characters, which ruined a number of fan favorites and alienated long-time readers in the process. Eventually, the creators had to accept the mistakes involving the re-launch, and another restructuring was done in the form of ‘DC Rebirth’ in 2016, which brought things back to their past state. This is the same situation DC’s cinematic universe has found itself in, as Dceu’s muddled, directionless roadmap has resulted in its end, and Dcu, formed by James Gunn, is about to begin its journey.

James Wan’s Aquaman was among the few silver linings of the Dceu, which, despite having a straightforward cookie-cutter plotline and generic characters, managed to become extremely entertaining and...

Movie Review: Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom
Image
Despite seeming to take small steps forward with both The Flash and Blue Beetle earlier this year, the DC Extended Cinematic Universe (Dcecu) suffers a calamitous setback with the arrival of the atrocious sequel to 2018’s Aquaman – Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

The bewildering and often aimless story within Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is concentrated primarily on the exploits of David Kane as he searches for the means to defeat Aquaman in the most brutal and destructive way possible. This forces Aquaman to make peace with his brother, Orm (Patrick Wilson), to have even a remote chance at stopping Black Manta before he causes catastrophic ecological destruction to the planet.

While the first Aquaman film tread water between mediocre and awful, the sequel dives deeper into the morass of convoluted plot tangents and overblown villains that have plagued the Dcecu since inception. Working with a story penned by himself,...

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom's Ending Explained

Quick Links Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom Raises The Killer, Kordax Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom Proves Who's the Real Regent Aquaman 2's Finale and Post-Credits Are All About Redemption

The following contains spoilers for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, now playing in theaters.

One of the things that makes Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom so intriguing is how audiences were curious to see how it would end the Snyderverse. Many were torn about the first movie, but at least it charted more lighthearted waters than the bleak, violent Man of Steel and Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice. With a consistent creative tone, Jason Momoa returns as Arthur Curry, who is adapting to life, not with the Justice League, but as King of Atlantis.

To make things even more complicated, he has to spend a lot of time at home to help Mera take care of their son, Arthur Jr.

Aquaman & The Lost Kingdom's 10 Biggest Spoilers & Reveals
Image
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom delivers some suprises, including Vulko's off-screen death and Black Manta's apparent demise, Dr. Shin's redemption, and the reveal that the Lost Kingdom's King Kordax is Atlan's brother. Black Manta is mind-controlled by King Kordax, but the movie subverts expectations with his failure to kill Aquaman's baby son. In fact, none of Aquaman's family members or allies die in the movie. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom ends with Atlantis revealing itself to the world, Orm's life as a regular human, and Aquaman's unexpected nod to Marvel's Iron Man during a speech.

James Wan’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom delivers a few surprises in the King of Atlantis' last Dceu adventure. After joining the Justice League and taking the Atlantean throne from his brother Orm, Jason Momoa's Aquaman returns to face his biggest rival, David Kane a.k.a. Black Manta, who plans...

Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom Review
Image
It's not easy being king, and it looks like Aquaman is learning this the hard way. Although being a new parent is no walk in the park, it's much better than dealing with the roadblocks and obstructive politics of the Atlantis council and grappling with the rapidly growing threat of climate change. Atlantis is at a crossroads. They must choose whether they wish to stay hidden or reveal themselves to an equally volatile surface world, and Arthur, a product of both worlds, is stuck in the middle.

But politics will have to wait. David Kane, aka Black Manta, has returned, still hellbent on taking revenge on the man who killed his father, and he's willing to take the entire world down with him. With the help of scientists, he has found the Black Trident -- a weapon of immense power forged in the dark, eldritch trenches of Atlantis's history. With this weapon,...

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom Review | You Can't Peel Your Eyes Away From This Disaster
Image
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom spectacularly misfires as the final smoking embers of the Snyderverse's last hurrah. It is a wacky nail in the coffin of a DC superhero vision that has been clearly abandoned by corporate masters. The madcap adventure juggles strange terms like "orichalcum" in a bewildering narrative that looks like rainbow skittles exploded on the screen. Nothing can be taken seriously as the characters engage in witless banter and silly sight gags while supposedly trying to save the world. It's clearly evident that Amber Heard's role was dramatically cut in post-production. The film is a hot mess but not unwatchable. You can't peel your eyes away from this train wreck.

The story begins with Arthur Curry/Aquaman (Jason Momoa) enjoying domestic bliss. He and Mera (Heard) are married with an infant son. They split time with his father (Temuera Morrison) on land and as Atlantean royalty below the sea.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom Review
Image
Released in 2018, the first Aquaman movie delivered a refreshing take on the DC Extended Universe, infusing the superhero genre with a blend of high camp, stunning visuals, and oodles of surrealist humour. Fast forward five years, and director James Wan returns with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, a sequel that takes the aquatic hero on a new, if not exactly as exciting, journey.

The film opens with Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) leading a dual life, balancing his responsibilities as the King of Atlantis and his adventures on land. Married to Mera (Amber Heard) and raising a son, Arthur Jr., Aquaman faces the challenges of royal duties and bureaucratic conflicts within the Atlantean council.

The plot takes a dark turn as Arthur’s nemesis, David Kane, resurfaces with a vengeful agenda and a plot to destroy his one true enemy. Arthur is then forced to team up with his estranged brother...

‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ Review: Jason Momoa in a Sequel That’s 3D but Flat, With Less Screensaver Fun and More ‘Dark’ Action
Image
Starting in the 2000s, for a little over a decade, 3D was sold as a value-added feature of moviegoing, even though, with rare exceptions, it never worked too well or added very much. (I would argue that it subtracted.) In most cases, 3D was a rip-off — a carny-barker way for studios to jack up ticket prices. That’s why the fad mostly faded away. It’s been a while since I was handed 3D glasses before walking into a movie screening, so when that happened before the media showing of “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” it was hard not to wonder: Why are they gilding this sea lily?

As it turns out, “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” benefits from 3D significantly less than the first “Aquaman” (2018) would have. That movie was mostly a boilerplate DC origin story, but it wasn’t badly told, and the underwater sequences — the heart of...

‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ Review: Jason Momoa Must Save the World (Again) in James Wan’s Predictable DC Sequel
Image
There’s a popular meme, spread across various social media platforms, where users upload a photo or video of themselves engaging in a series of increasingly ridiculous poses or actions. It’s accompanied by variations of the phrase “Never let them know your next move” — a cheeky imperative warning against predictability. Unlike participants in this trend, the team behind Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom isn’t afraid of doing what’s expected. They seem to prefer it.

James Wan’s sequel to his 2018 blockbuster Aquaman is frustratingly committed to formula. There are few surprises in this story of how Jason Momoa’s Arthur balances the responsibility of ruling his underwater kingdom with the challenges of parenthood. There are even fewer inspired moments in the screenplay, which moves between clunky exposition laying out more Atlantis lore and a string of punchlines in search of a joke. Somewhere in there, screenwriter David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick...

‘Aquaman’ Recap: Everything To Know Before Watching’ Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom’
Image
Despite sporadic efforts to repair the disastrous and confusing continuity of DC Extended Universe, it was doomed to fail thanks to multiple problems which plagued the shared universe ranging from misinterpretation of source material, interference in creative vision to controversy surrounding actors. The early signs of mismanagement under the contemporary WB regime were apparent during the divisive reception of the first phase of Dceu, and as a result, the universe almost crash-landed after the poor reception of Justice League (Joss Whedon version) back in 2017. However, the one movie that almost single-handedly turned the proverbial tide in the favor of Dceu was James Wan’s Aquaman, which to date stands as the franchise’s most entertaining and highest-grossing entry. In a franchise where a crossover movie of three premier characters couldn’t meet expectations, Aquaman, formerly known as the bottom of ‘Merman’ jokes, became its savior.

It would have made sense...

Aquaman 2 Story Recap: 10 Things To Know From Previous DC Movies & Shows
Image
The events of Justice League and Aquaman are key to understand Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, as they explain Atlantis' backstory, Aquaman's origin story, and Black Manta's reasons to swear revenge on Aquaman. In James Wan's Aquaman, the titular hero trains with Vulko, falls in love with Mera, fights his brother Orm, and claims Atlan's Trident, becoming the King of Atlantis. In Justice League, Aquaman becomes a founding member of the titular superhero team, helping to defeat Steppenwolf and learning what it means to be a hero.

James Wan's Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom continues the story of Jason Momoa's Arthur Curry after three major Dceu appearances that influence the events of the sequel. Introduced in the form of a brief cameo in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Jason Momoa's Aquaman has become one of the biggest DC stars. Although he only appeared a few times in the franchise,...

DC Reveals Why Black Manta Is So Much More Powerful in Aquaman 2
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom Special #1

Black Manta's newfound power in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is explained in the tie-in comic. He goes through trials and defeats a rival captain's crew to prove his worthiness. These trials were designed to show David Kane that he has always been worthy of the Black Manta legacy, giving him a newfound determination and belief in his abilities. The introduction of the Black Trident in the movie may overshadow Black Manta's individual abilities, but hopefully the focus will remain on his grit and character development.

Enthusiastic Black Manta fans might have observed what seems to be a noticeable increase in David Kane's power in the upcoming movie Aquaman and the Last Kingdom. As a prelude to the movie, a new DC tie-in comic provides fans with an explanation for the source of Manta's newfound prowess, one that is unrelated to his Black Trident.

Speculation arises that Karshon could still team up with Black Manta in the sequel, as the supervillain seeks revenge on Aquaman.

James Wan has opened up about how Karshon, one of the new characters introduced in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, will be a little different from how they are in the comic. Wan's latest film will be a sequel to 2018 superhero hit, and will see Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) facing off against David Kane, aka Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II). While Black Manta is traditionally Aquaman's archenemy in the comics, they won't be the only rogue that Arthur faces in the movie. Another one...

10 Best Villain Introductions In DC Movies
Image
The Dceu has effectively adapted and characterized its supervillains, providing viewers with insights into their motivations, abilities, and threat levels. The introductions of supervillains like Black Manta, Doomsday, and Dark Flash have been particularly memorable and impactful, setting the stage for their later actions and conflicts with the heroes. These villain introductions showcase the Dceu's commitment to providing layered and complex characterizations for its antagonists, making them more than simple obstacles for the heroes to overcome.

The DC Extended Universe is nearing its end, but in its decade of live-action DC adaptations, it has had many memorable introductions to its supervillains. In addition to featuring some of the best live-action iterations of DC’s iconic superheroes, the Dceu movies have also excellently adapted and characterized its many supervillains. As is often the case, a villain’s first impression can provide viewers with key information about their motivation, abilities, and the...

Black Manta Was The First Aquaman Film's Greatest Strength
Image
Aquaman showcased Black Manta as a compelling secondary villain with a sympathetic backstory, providing one of the movie's strongest narratives. The film solved the Dceu's multi-villain narrative problem by weaving Black Manta's motivations into Aquaman's character arc. Black Manta's main villain role in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom might overcomplicate his goals for the sake of plot.

Aquaman proved that Black Manta didn't need to be a power-hungry character to be a good antagonist. The film was a notable bright spot for the DC Extended Universe, a franchise that produced a motley of flawed superhero films ever since its 2013 inception. The Dceu boldly transformed iconic DC characters, like Superman and Batman, into darker and edgier versions of their comic book counterparts. But as a result, audiences and comic book fans critically panned the Dceu's films for being unable to capture the optimism of DC's characters. James Wan's Aquaman film...

Directed by the acclaimed James Wan and boasting a star-studded cast, the sequel promises to plunge fans deeper into the enigmatic world of Atlantis and its reigning king, Arthur Curry.

The new TV spot paints a vivid picture of the challenges that lie ahead for Aquaman, played by Jason Momoa. David Kane, his menacing presence on a throne, signifies an imminent threat to the tranquility of the underwater kingdom. The trailer offers glimpses of high-octane action sequences, with Aquaman and Black Manta locked in fierce combat, underscoring the personal vendetta that fuels their rivalry.

The First Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom Teaser Is Here To Ruin Arthur Curry's Life
Image
As if playing a gloriously and flamboyantly unhinged villain in "Fast X" wasn't enough for one year, Jason Momoa has returned for some more underwater hijinks in a teaser for the trailer for upcoming sequel "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom."

The 30-second teaser features Yahya Abdul-Mateen II's David Kane aka Black Manta, having been promoted from secondary antagonist to primary antagonist, promising to "destroy Aquaman and everything he holds dear." This is punctuated by a shot of the lighthouse where Arthur Curry's father lives being consumed by flames, hinting that we might be in for some classic dead-parent superhero character motivation in this movie. But more importantly, there's a brief shot of Aquaman leaping out of the ocean on the back of a giant seahorse accompanied by someone who looks a lot like Topo the drumming octopus. Hooray for Topo getting an expanded role!

Aquaman 2: How James Wan Could Repeat the Success of Conjuring 2 with Reshoots
Image
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, the sequel to the 2018 blockbuster Aquaman, is one of the most anticipated DC movies of 2023. The film will see Jason Momoa return as Arthur Curry/Aquaman, who must face a new threat that could endanger his underwater kingdom and the surface world. However, the film has also faced several challenges and delays during its production, including three rounds of reshoots and constant test screenings. But this may not be a bad thing, as director James Wan has proven before that he can use reshoots to improve his movies and surprise his audiences.

Wan is no stranger to reshoots, as he did the same thing with his 2016 horror hit, The Conjuring 2. In that film, he added the character of the nun, who was the main villain of the movie, in reshoots. He said he was still discovering the design of the demon character while editing...

Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom Footage Reaction: Arthur And Orm Join Forces [CinemaCon 2023]
Image
Jason Momoa and his trident are back! But maybe not for long. Thanks to new DC Studios co-chief James Gunn, the DC Extended Universe is coming to an end this Christmas season — and it'll wrap up with a sequel to DC's highest-grossing movie of all time, "Aquaman." While Batman, Superman, Shazam, Wonder Woman, and Black Adam are all being left behind, if there's any character that has a shot at transferring into the new DC Universe, Jason Momoa's King of Atlantis looks like the best bet. Given the film's commercial chances.

Of course, just because the first "Aquaman" movie rode the waves to become a billion-dollar grosser, doesn't mean its follow-up — "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" — is destined to do the same. Momoa and returning director James Wan will be hoping for a repeat; more so the latter. The actor might already have a future in the new Dcu, given...

The films far harsher than their reputation suggests
News Simon Brew 13 Nov 2013 - 06:44

Officer And A Gentleman a romcom? The Full Monty a comedy? The Fox And The Hound all cute and cuddly? Er...

A couple of weekends back, three films converged on my eyeballs. I watched the apparent uplifting love story, An Officer And A Gentleman. The Spielbergian family adventure Batteries Not Included. And I caught a bit of Disney's The Fox And The Hound for the first time in a decade or so.

Each of these films, and the others I'm about to discuss, has a reputation of being something warm, cuddly, friendly and easy. But is that the minds of the consensus playing tricks? Because the truth is that there are films that we tend to remember as being one thing, that turn out to be far, far darker. Some of that is down how the film was originally marketed. Some down to how...

TV Review: The Field Of Blood Part 1
Last night I caught up with BBC1’s two-parter The Field of Blood on the iPlayer. Based on the best-selling Denise Mina novel the story has been adapted and directed by David Kane. The story, set in 1982, follows Paddy Meehan (Jayd Johnson), an ambitious young copy girl at a Glasgow newspaper who dreams of finding the big story and fighting injustice. As she thinks she’s found the case to kick-start her career she ends up embroiled in a murder case that comes at a cost to her. David Morrissey plays the surprisingly small role of her sexist and vulgar boss, Devlin.

As Paddy struggles to find her way in a very male dominated and sexist world of journalism she comes under abuse of all manner of drunken Scottish men, but still manages to keep her resolve. Paddy also seems to have the habit of being a nosey cow, I...
