There is beauty in capturing the human face in close-up. The face becomes the stage for the drama to unfold on the screen. Will, directed by Tim Mielants, is a film that is interested in capturing moments in the close-up first and foremost. The spatial dynamics of the scenes are secondary. That being said, Will has a brilliant screenplay, and the characters are so grounded in the story, which we are told has something to do with history (with an H).

Set in Antwerp, Belgium, the new WWII movie tells the story of an auxiliary policeman working during the Nazi occupation. The movie was first announced to be coming to Netflix via the New on Netflix newsletter for January 2024, including the title with its original name of Wil, which has since been replaced to have two Ls in the Netflix Ui.

Martin Campbell’s action thriller ‘Memory’ has rounded out its ensemble cast, adding Emmy winner Guy Pearce, Monica Bellucci, Harold Torres, Taj Atwal and Ray Fearon.

The actors will star alongside Liam Neeson, who plays Alex Lewis, an expert assassin “with a reputation for discreet precision.”

According to the logline, when Alex refuses to complete a job for a dangerous criminal organization, he becomes a target and must go on the hunt for those who want him dead. Europe’s pubcasters have joined forces to combat such streaming giants as Netflix and Amazon in the international TV market — and the first projects from this collaboration are under way.

Continental Europe’s leading public broadcasters — Italy’s Rai, France Televisions and Germany’s Zdf — in March forged a scripted content co-production pact called the Alliance with the stated goal of co-financing innovative, higher-profile, and generally bigger TV series for viewers in Europe and the rest of the world.

Meant to give participants greater firepower against the Netflixes of this world, the Alliance has spawned several projects, including a high-end “Leonardo” skein, with Frank Spotnitz on board and Rai in the leading role. It is the first of the projects expected to hit screens, in 2019.

Cloudboy has won the Works In Progress award - which comes with an $11,000 (€10,000) prize - at Flanders Image’s inaugural NeXT event. The story is about a Belgian boy who connects to his Swedish mother’s Sami roots during a summer trip to Lapland.

An international industry jury said, “We really want to see the special world that director Meikeminne Clinckspoor has created. We thought producer Katleen Goossens was very well prepared with her presentation, and both she and Meikeminne also told us about the heart of the story not just the plot. The story is both original and universal and we think it will appeal to wide audiences.”

A total of 34 film projects have received funding totaling €8.5m ($11.4m) from the budget of the new Netherlands Film Production Incentive.

It is anticipated that these projects will generate €47.9m ($64.6m) in Netherlands-based production expenditure.

Amazon has acquired exclusive rights to the Oscar-nominated "The Broken Circle Breakdown" from Tribeca Film, the company announced today. The Belgium film, which debuted in the U.S. at the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival, is nominated for Best Foreign Language Film. The feature, which follows a couple over the course of seven years as they fall in love and experience a family tragedy, is based on a play co-written by Johan Heldenbergh, one of the film's stars. The Flemish-language film was written by van Groeningen and Carl Joos and directed by Felix van Groeningen. Felix van Groeningen’s The Broken Circle Breakdown has been chosen as the official entry of Belgium to the Academy Awards’ Best Foreign Language Film Award.

The decision was made unanimously by a national jury.

The film centres on a love affair between tattoo artist Elise (Veerle Baetens) and bluegrass musician Didier (Johan Heldenbergh). After bonding over their shared enthusiasm for American music and culture, they enter into a sweeping romance but when an unexpected tragedy hits their new family, everything they know and love is put to the test.

The Broken Circle Breakdown is an unexpectedly beautiful musical parable about the contradictions of the universe. Rooted almost completely in a reality that seems like our own, it strips down the tropes of the Hollywood musical to paint an effective portrait of love, despair and pain. Elise and Didier fall in love, they sing together in a band, they have a beautiful daughter and then she falls ill; changing all what they knew about the universe. Using a non-linear format and beautifully utilized musical sequences, the film paints an exaggerated portrait of faith and love in the face of chaos.

Topping the night with two awards each were Kim Mordaunt's Australian drama "The Rocket" and Felix Van Groeningen's Belgian film "The Broken Circle Breakdown." "The Rocket" nabbed Best Narrative Feature and Best Actor for Sitthiphon Disamoe, while "Broken Circle" walked away with Best Screenplay for a Narrative Film for Carl Joos and Van Groeningen, and Best Actress for its star Veerle Baetens. The locally shot "Stand Clear of Closing Doors," from Sam Fleischner, got a Special Jury Mention in the Narrative category. Over in the World Documentary Competition, Best Documentary Feature went to the war film "The Kill Team," directed by Dan Krauss, with a Special Jury Mention for Sean Dunne's "Oxyana," which went on to win Best New Documentary Director. Tribeca Film Festival organizers on Wednesday announced 46 of the 89 feature films screening at the New York-set festival starting next month, including selections in the World Narrative and Documentary Competition film sections, as well as out-of-competition Viewpoints screenings.

Belgian film "The Broken Circle Breakdown" has won the Europa Cinemas Label as Best European Film in the Berlinale's Panorama section. It is directed by Felix van Groeningen, and centers on the stormy relationship between a bluegrass musician and a tattoo artist. Synopsis below. The film will now receive support from the Europa Cinemas Network, with incentives to theatrical exhibitors to extend its run on screens. It is co-written by van Groeningen and Carl Joos, and stars Jonah Heldenbergh, Veerle Baetens and Nell Cattrysse. Didier and Elise’s relationship is stormy and passionate; it’s love at first sight. Didier plays the banjo in a bluegrass band, lives in a caravan in the Belgian countryside and idolises America as the ‘land of the free’. Elise owns her own tattoo parlour.
