Mighty Morphin Power Rangers debuted on Fox Kids in August 1993 and became an immediate hit. Even now, it's still one of the most beloved eras of the long-running franchise. However, given when it first aired, the series was, at times, a little culturally insensitive. 

For example, a Black actor, Walter Emanuel Jones, was cast as the Black Ranger and an Asian actress, Thuy Trang, was chosen to portray the Yellow Ranger. That's been discussed a lot over the years, with those who worked on the series at the time facing a lot of criticism.

Talking on the "Dark Side of the Power Rangers" episode of Discovery's Hollywood Demons, former Power Rangers showrunner Tony Oliver said, "None of us are thinking stereotypes." He explained that was how the series got to air and ran for two seasons with "the Black character the Black Ranger and the Asian character the Yellow Ranger.

In her new role, Welle will lead Smp’s creative team “in attracting top talent and expanding opportunities for songwriters globally,” according to a release. Taking effect Feb. 1, Welle will replace Walter Jones, who is leaving Smp.

Welle, who will report to Smp chairman and CEO Jon Platt, most recently served as the publishing company’s SVP of creative. “Katie has an exceptional gift for identifying and nurturing talent. No one can forget seeing the Red, Blue, Black, Yellow, Pink, and Green Rangers fighting against the evil sorceress Rita Repulsa and her minions. This show became a weekly addiction for children; they all had their favorite ranger. But halfway through filming the second season, Austin St. John (who played Red Ranger Jason Lee Scott), Walter Jones (who played Black Ranger Zack Taylor), and Thuy Trang (who played Yellow Ranger Trini Kwan) all mysteriously left the show and were replaced by other actors.

Since their departure, fans have been eager to uncover the truth behind the actors' exit. Yet, as viewers flock to shows like Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, Dune: Prophecy, and The Penguin, it is a reminder of how many incredible series are left behind, overshadowed by bigger names or fading from memory entirely. Nickelodeon's Space Cases had everything these new series offer, except the advantage of a recognizable legacy. Nearly 30 years later, Space Cases still feels like a "long strange trip" worth revisiting, a hidden gem in need of love before it disappears into the void forever.

Go go to Tubi next month because the 1993 cult classic series Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is coming to the free streaming platform on December 1 and whether you love it for its campy fun, its hard hitting fight scenes or the most unflattering costumes known to man, the cult series is still as rewatchable today as it was back then. The cast features the late Jason David Frank as Tommy (the White Ranger), Amy Jo Johnson as Kimberly (the Pink Ranger), David Yost as Billy (the Blue Ranger), Walter Jones as Zack (the Black Ranger), the late Thuy Trang as Trini (the Yellow Ranger), and Austin St. John as Jason (the Red Ranger).

Johnny Yong Boschs Adam Park had the difficult mission to replace Walter Emanuel Jones Zack Taylor in Power Rangers, but the second Black Ranger ended up becoming an iconic character himself. While the first Power Rangers team changed midway through season 2 following the exits of three cast members, the original Red, Yellow, and Black Rangers had all become fan favorites by that point. This is why replacing Jason, Trini, and Zack with new characters was risky.

Still, introducing three new Power Rangers characters was arguably a much better approach than recasting Jason, Zack, and Trini. The Stone Canyon trio Rocky, Aisha, and Adam were introduced in The Ninja Encounter, during which they proved their strength and loyalty. In the following episode, The Power Transfer, those three were chosen by Zordon to become the new Red, Yellow, and Black Rangers. Of those three, the one who carved the biggest legacy in Power Rangers was Adam.

Zack Taylor, the original Black Ranger, left the team during Mighty Morphin Power Rangers season 2 and would only interact with his replacement on screen 29 years later. The original Power Rangers team went through a few big changes throughout its three-season run, one of which was the exits of Austin St. John, Thuy Trang, and Walter Emanuel Jones. By the end of Mmpr season 3, David Yosts Billy was the only one of the first five Rangers still on the show.

Replacing four of the teams members was no easy feat, but Power Rangers surprisingly found great new characters that were welcomed by the fanbase and would remain on the show for years to come. Apart from Aisha, all second generation Rangers remained on the show through Power Rangers Zeo and the first half of Power Rangers Turbo. Zordon demoted Jason and made Tommy the leader of the Power Rangers instead in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers season 2, one of the strangest moments in the shows history. Jason David Franks Tommy Oliver first appeared in Mighty Morphin season 1, episode 17, Green With Evil: Part I, the beginning of a fourth-part episode that introduced the Green Ranger. While Tommy was initially brainwashed into working for Rita Repulsa, he eventually broke free of her spell and joined the Power Rangers as the sixth and final member of what became known as the original team.

Tommys Green Ranger run would continue until Mighty Morphin season 2, episodes 12-13, Green Ranger No More. Lord Zedd finally accomplished what Rita had failed to do and eradicated the Green Rangers powers. Losing his powers took a toll on Tommy and caused him to leave Angel Grove for a while, but his time away from the Power Rangers would not last long.

Thuy Trangs legacy as Trini Kwan will forever live on in Power Rangers, and the franchise has recently put the original Yellow Ranger front and center in several stories across different media. Even though the Power Rangers chronology continued past Mighty Morphin, the franchise never stopped telling stories about its original heroes. Not only did several Mmpr actors return for cameos and even recurring roles in other shows and movies, but properties like the comics and the games regularly revisit the teenagers with attitude audiences were introduced to in 1993.

Trini Kwans final appearance in Power Rangers was in season 2, episode 20, "Opposites Attract" released in 1994. This was also the final proper appearances of Jason Lee Scott and Zack Taylor before Austin St. John, Walter Emanuel Jones, and Thuy Trang left the show. The original Red, Black, and Yellow Rangers would still appear in a couple of other episodes, although through reused footage and stand-in body doubles.

Every season of Power Rangers varies wildly when it comes to the ages of the characters. Kids, teenagers, adults, and the elderly have all been Rangers, and the age range of the villains they face spans even wider. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers famously stars a team of teenagers, but not everyone around them goes to high school.

Power Rangers maintained a consistent continuity for 30 seasons, and many of the original cast members continued to make appearances over the years. The teenagers with attitude grow up throughout Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and beyond. Other characters, meanwhile, never got the chance to continue aging.
