How Documentary Filmmakers Found New Stuff to Say About Sly Stone, Springsteen and The Beatles
Image
It’s no surprise that this year’s Emmy nonfiction races are filled with films and series about iconic musicians, because music docs have been a main-stay at film festivals, in theaters and on television for decades. But the 2024-2025 season feels particularly robust, and particularly long on films about giants, from the Beatles to John Williams to Bruce Springsteen.

“I’m interested in story and conflict and characters and through lines in music,” said director David Tedeschi, who has worked with Martin Scorsese on documentaries about Bob Dylan, George Harrison, David Johansen and, this year, the Beatles. “And music is often a document of what artists were going through in the moment. So to tell those stories and to have the power of that music to go with it, it can be a very satisfying experience.”

This survey of a few of the most notable music films starts with Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson,...

This was their fourth visit to the United Arab Emirates since 2017, and they mixed up the setlist for the occasion and brought out some surprises. The most notable one came near the end of the night when they broke out the 1974 New York Dolls classic “Human Being“ for the first time in their history as a live act. (They didn’t mention Dolls lead singer David Johansen, but it’s a safe bet his...

David Letterman’s YouTube Channel Is Inadvertently Spreading Celebrity Death Rumors
Image
While David Letterman no longer has a late-night show (unless you choose to watch his sporadic Netflix series at precisely 11:35 p.m.), the Letterman YouTube channel has been quite busy posting vintage clips.

As we’ve mentioned before, a number of these uploads have been timed to coincide with current events, such as the recent U.S. election. But it’s also become standard operating procedure for the Letterman channel to respond to notable celebrity deaths by sharing old clips of the departed appearing on either Late Night or The Late Show or both.

Already this year we’ve gotten multiple examples of this. In January, Letterman posted interviews with Bob Uecker and David Lynch when they both died on the same day. And a performance of “The Weight” went up following the news that The Band’s last surviving member, Garth Hudson, was no longer with us.

In the past 10 days,...

The Tao of David Johansen
Image
Unlike the other New York Dolls — the band he didn’t quite invent but came to personify after he was recruited when geeky bassist Arthur Kane and doomed drummer Billy Murcia knocked on his door in 1971 and asked if he’d join — David Johansen grew up solidly middle class on Staten Island, where his opera-loving dad was in insurance and his mom worked as a librarian. But he wouldn’t have skipped college to relocate to the East Village if he didn’t have artier plans. When I first saw...

‘The View’ Spotlights Actors That Were Left Out of Oscars In Memoriam Segment
Image
Hollywood sadly lost some huge talents in 2024 and early 2025, but not all of them made it into this year’s In Memoriam segment at the Oscars. So, on Monday morning, “The View” made sure to spotlight people who were left out.

Moderator Whoopi Goldberg was at the Oscars herself on Sunday, onstage with Oprah Winfrey to honor the late, great Quincy Jones. Kicking off the ABC talk show on Monday morning, she admitted that she was just as surprised as her co-hosts that she made it back for the show, explaining that she left to fly back to New York pretty much immediately after finishing on stage.

As “The View” went on, Whoopi transitioned at the end of the third segment to note that “we’ve lost a lot of great people lately.”

“New York Dolls frontman David Johansen, who you were playing ‘Hot, Hot, Hot,’ he passed. He’s also known as Buster Poindexter.

Oscars: Tony Todd, Michelle Trachtenberg, Shannen Doherty Left Out of In Memoriam Segment
Image
The In Memoriam portion of the 2025 Oscars telecast on Sunday night paid a moving tribute to several stars and movie industry folk who have died over the last year, but there were some notable omissions that were quickly pointed out on social media.

The In Memoriam segment of the show, that was soundtracked to the “Lacrimosa” portion of Mozart’s “Requiem in D Minor,” featured moving tributes to entertainment industry giants the likes of David Lynch, Maggie Smith, Roger Corman, Shelley Duvall, Bob Newhart, James Earl Jones and Donald Sutherland. Two-time Oscar-winner Gene Hackman, who was found dead inside his Sante Fe home alongside his wife Betsy Arakawa, was given a moving special tribute by his longtime friend Morgan Freeman.

But as ever with the Academy Awards and the In Memoriam segment, much of the discussion online is who was omitted from the televised tribute. One of the more glaring omissions was actor Tony Todd,...

David Johansen on the New York Dolls’ Colorful History: The Lost Interview
Image
Three years ago, in the midst of researching my book Talkin’ Greenwich Village: The Heady Rise and Slow Fall of America’s Bohemian Music Capital, I knew I had to talk to David Johansen. Not because Johansen — who died Feb. 28 at the age of 75 — was one of those folksingers associated with the neighborhood, but because his first major band, the New York Dolls, made its name and proudly trashy reputation at the Mercer Arts Center, a multi-tiered performance space in the Village.

In their original incarnation, the Dolls only lasted a few years,...

Farewell, David Johansen, the Ultimate New York Doll: He Was Good-Bad But Not Evil
Image
Goodbye to David Johansen, the last jet boy standing from the New York Dolls. It wasn’t just his madman energy that helped invent punk rock — it was his warmth and soul. He got a loving send-off in the final weeks of his life, after his daughter Leah Hennessy announced that he was dying of cancer. The news inspired a worldwide outpouring of grief and gratitude. This man was a lifelong personality crisis, preaching his rock & roll gospel that posing and strutting and peacocking through life is not merely fun,...

Martin Scorsese Remembers David Johansen: ‘What a Remarkable Artist. What an Amazing Man’

Martin Scorsese has paid tribute to David Johansen, who died on Feb. 28 at age 75. The filmmaker helmed the Johansen doc Personality Crisis: One Night Only, which featured interviews with the New York Dolls frontman and punk rock pioneer.

“With David Johansen, it started with the music, of course. Actually, with a New York Dolls song, ‘Personality Crisis.’ I heard that song, I can’t remember when or where, and it stayed with me. I listened to it obsessively,” Scorsese said in a statement shared with Rolling Stone. “The sound was rough,...

Flashback: David Johansen Appears as the Ghost of Christmas Past in ‘Scrooged’
Image
For the first 20 years of David Johansen’s career — despite his immense role in kickstarting the punk movement as the frontman of New York Dolls and all of his great solo work that followed — genuine mainstream success seemed like an impossible dream. That changed in 1987, when he scored a fluke mega-hit by covering “Hot Hot Hot” as his lounge act alter ego Buster Poindexter. It was the most successful thing he’d ever done by a huge magnitude, and it landed him on MTV and even The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson.

When Morrissey attempted to reunite the New York Dolls in 2004 for a performance at London’s Meltdown festival, he thought his odds of success were low. “I expected David [Johansen] to laugh at me and put the phone down,” he said that year. “But he was very agreeable and it seemed like now was the right time. He said, ‘Yes, they are great songs.’ I said, ‘Yes, and that’s the reason why you should sing them. That’s the reason why people still want to hear them.’”

David Johansen Dies: New York Dolls Singer & ‘Scrooged’ Actor Was 75
Image
New York Dolls lead singer David Johansen has died at age 75. A representative confirmed the musician’s death in a statement to Rolling Stone, saying, “David Johansen died at home in NYC on Friday afternoon holding hands with his wife Mara Hennessey and daughter Leah, surrounded [by] music, flowers, and love. He was 75 years old and died of natural causes after nearly a decade of illness.” In a fundraising message on February 14, Leah said that her father had been undergoing intensive treatment for stage 4 cancer for most of the last decade and that he was diagnosed with a brain tumor five years ago. Johansen had broken his back in two places in a November 2024 fall and was bedridden and incapacitated, Leah added. “We’ve been living with my illness for a long time, still having fun, seeing friends and family, carrying on, but this tumble the day after Thanksgiving really brought...

David Johansen Dies: New York Dolls Frontman Who Recently Revealed Stage 4 Cancer Was 75
Image
David Johansen, frontman of influential punk band the New York Dolls, has died. He was 75.

The musician, who also performed under the pseudonym Buster Poindexter, died on Friday at his home in New York City, his daughter Leah Hennessey confirmed to multiple outlets, weeks after revealing his stage 4 cancer diagnosis.

Hennessey announced her father’s diagnosis last month after Johansen’s healthcare left the family with an “increasingly severe financial burden” after he had been in “intensive treatment” for a majority of the past decade.

“Five years ago at the beginning of the pandemic we discovered that David’s cancer had progressed and he had a brain tumor. There have been complications ever since. He’s never made his diagnosis public, as he and my mother Mara are generally very private people, but we feel compelled to share this now, due to the increasingly severe financial burden our family is facing,...

Rip: David Johansen, New York Dolls singer and charismatic actor, dies
Image
Last Updated on March 3, 2025

Niagara Falls, Frankie… David Johansen, a vital figure in the punk scene of the 1970s, has passed away after a battle with cancer. He had also been suffering from a brain tumor and a broken back, all revelations Johansen made just weeks ago. He was 75.

While we could rattle off dozens of key names in the world of punk during that time, it would be absolutely incomplete without mentioning David Johansen, who fronted seminal proto-punk band the New York Dolls. The prime run of the New York Dolls was only two albums and half of the original lineup had left in 1975, but their impact in that short-lived time period is undeniable. Johansen was the last surviving original member.

But to say that David Johansen was known only for his contributions to punk would be to grossly shortchange his career. Johansen dabbled in various genres, showing an...

David Johansen, New York Dolls Singer, Dead at 75
Image
David Johansen, the pioneering vocalist known for his work with New York Dolls and his persona Buster Poindexter, has died. He was 75 years old.

According to a statement from his publicist, Johansen “died at home in New York City on Friday afternoon holding hands with his wife Mara Hennessey and daughter Leah, surrounded by music, flowers, and love. He was 75-years-old and died of natural causes after nearly a decade of illness.”

Johansen had been battling stage four cancer and a brain tumor, and had kept the situation private for a number of years. After a fall that broke his back in two places last November, though, things had taken a turn for the worst, leading him to reveal his diagnosis and ask for financial help in January 2025.

Born David Roger Johansen on January 9th, 1950 in New York City, Johansen first rose to prominence performing with local groups on Staten Island.

David Johansen, New York Dolls Vocalist and Co-Founder, Dies at 75
David Johansen
David Johansen, the gravelly-voiced showman who helped ignite the punk rock movement as the vocalist of the New York Dolls before he recorded “Hot Hot Hot” as the lounge lizard Buster Poindexter and acted in Scrooged, has died. He was 75.

Johansen died Friday at his home in Staten Island, his stepdaughter, Leah Hennessey, told The New York Times.

Hennessy revealed Feb. 10 that Johansen had been battling Stage 4 cancer for a decade, had a brain tumor and had broken his back in a fall just after Thanksgiving. The family asked for donations to help with their medical expenses.

The outlandish and raw New York Dolls, fond of vulgarity and dressing in drag, were comprised of Johansen, guitarists Sylvain Sylvain and Johnny Thunders, bassist Arthur Kane and drummer Jerry Nolan when they laid down in eight days their eponymous breakthrough album, produced by Todd Rundgren for Mercury Records, in 1973.

“We went into a room and just recorded,...

10 Christmas Movies Where The Villains Are People That Don't Believe In Santa Claus
Image
Santa Claus is very much one of the main characters when it comes to the holiday, but some Christmas films feature people who aren't fond of Old St. Nick. Also known as Father Christmas, Kris Kringle, and many, many more, the big guy in red has cropped up in many a holiday celebration, and therefore, many a holiday movie. Whether he's the actual Santa from the North Pole, or simply a representation of the idea of the Christmas spirit, his presence is what adds to the magic of the season.

There have been plenty of characters in Christmas films that have ended up on the Naughty List who didn't believe in his existence or refused to embrace the meaning of the holiday. Whether they're robbing houses and stealing presents from right under the tree, or spoiling the fun for everyone around, there are definitely quite a few characters who need...

‘Beatles ’64’ Review: The Beatles’ First Visit to America Looks New Again in an Electrifying Documentary Produced by Martin Scorsese
Image
If there’s any chapter of the Beatles’ saga that Beatles fans the world over feel they know in their bones, it’s the early months of 1964, when the Beatles first came to America — a happening that shook the world, and that changed it profoundly. “Beatles ’64” is a documentary that chronicles the three weeks the Beatles spent in the U.S. starting in February of that year. They came to New York to perform on “The Ed Sullivan Show” (their first appearance on the show was Feb. 9). They then took a train to Washington, D.C., to give a concert at the Washington Coliseum, then flew to Miami Beach, where they did their second “Ed Sullivan” appearance.

“Beatles ’64” opens with an extended sequence devoted to the early-’60s reign of John F. Kennedy — because, as has been noted so often, JFK was assassinated just a little over two months before their arrival,...

‘Beatles ’64’ Review: Disney+’s Illuminating Fab Four Doc Captures the Crucible Moment of the Band’s First U.S. Visit
Image
A clip in Beatles ’64 features Canadian media theorist Marshall McLuhan making a salient observation: “The chances of your understanding anything going on in your own time are very small, except through the means provided by artists. Artists are people who enjoy living in the present.” That perspective is both supported and disproven by the film’s candid access to John, Paul, George and Ringo — surnames not required — on the cusp of global superstardom during their first visit to America in 1964.

The band members are by no means oblivious to the seismic momentum of Beatlemania, becoming virtual prisoners at New York’s Plaza Hotel as it’s surrounded by a mob of screaming fans. And yet they remain at that time disarmingly innocent, almost incredulous — fundamentally still four goofy working-class lads from Liverpool with mop-top haircuts who appear to view the hysteria mostly as a lark. Only in interviews years...

Ridley Scott and 14 Other Directors Over 80 Still Making Movies
Image
At 86, Ridley Scott is on the cusp of releasing one of the biggest films of his career — “Gladiator II” — and already has at least two additional projects lined up for 2025, a reteam with Paul Mescal and a Bee Gees biopic. With no signs of slowing down.

He’s not the only Hollywood veteran who’s still making movies: Martin Scorsese, who turned 82 this year, made one of the best films of his career with “Killers of the Flower Moon” while Clint Eastwood (94) has what might be his final film, “Juror #2” in theaters now.

Here are 15 directors over 80 who are still busy making movies.

Martin Scorsese’s ‘Beatles ’64’ Documentary Hits Disney+ in November
Image
Martin Scorsese is producing a new Disney+ documentary that chronicles The Beatles’ first trip to the U.S. in 1964. The documentary, aptly dubbed “Beatles ’64,” will hit Disney+ on Nov. 29, the streamer announced Monday.

Directed by Scorsese collaborator David Tedeschi, “Beatles ’64” will look at the rise of Beatlemania in the States, with recently unearthed behind-the-scenes footage and new interviews from Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney.

“Beatles ’64” will follow The Fab Four — McCartney, Starr, John Lennon and George Harrison — from the first moment they landed in New York City on Feb. 7, 1964, just two days before 73 million people watched them perform on “The Ed Sullivan Show.”

Footage from that historic performance, as well as the group’s first American show in Washington, D.C., will be mixed among clips that show a “more intimate behind the scenes story,” according to a press release from the band.

Scorsese is, of course, no stranger to music or Beatles-related documentaries.

Image
A new documentary produced by Martin Scorsese will celebrate Beatlemania’s diamond jubilee. Beatles ’64, which will debut on Disney+ on Nov. 29, will feature new interviews with Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and the Beatlemaniacs who followed them, paired with footage of the band’s first U.S. concert and Ed Sullivan Show appearance. All of the archival footage has been restored in 4K, and the audio for the live footage was demixed by WingNut Films and remixed by Giles Martin, who was the music supervisor for Peter Jackson’s Get Back docuseries.

All 48 Stephen King Movies, Ranked Worst to Best
Image
Stephen King isn’t just an author by this point: He’s an institution, a legacy of classic horror stories that capture our imaginations, fuel our nightmares, and speak — when he’s at his best — to our shared experiences as flawed, emotional beings. The best King stories scare so many of us that we all feel connected, and even the worst are usually pretty fun.

King’s books and short stories quickly became hit movies, many of them celebrated in their time, and some flopped so hard that hardly anybody remembers them. Cataloguing every adaptation might be a fool’s errand, so we made some tough choices and decided to focus only on his theatrical releases.

And even then, there are so many King adaptations that it gets tricky. The sequels to King’s work rarely have anything to do with the source material, so they’re all disqualified. We...

Exclusive Trailer for Candy Mountain Resurrects Robert Frank and Rudy Wurlitzer’s Musical Road Trip
Image
MoMA’s Bulle Ogier retrospective was occasion upon occasion for discovery, and even then it was great fortune to encounter Candy Mountain, a 1987 road picture directed by legendary photographer Robert Frank and screenwriter Rudy Wurlitzer starring Kevin J. O’Connor, Tom Waits, Joe Strummer, and Dr. John, with the legendary French actress in a small, pivotal supporting role. Replete with cold, pale colors and a thoroughly comfortable vibe, it’s also, from the 2024’s vantage, more than a little melancholy for introducing sequestered communities that very likely don’t exist today.

But all’s been preserved in a 2K restoration which Film Movement’s releasing on October 25 in celebration of Frank’s centenary, and we’re pleased to debut the trailer. Here’s the synopsis: “New York City, 1980s. A struggling, deadbeat musician named Julius has fallen on hard times. With no guitar, band or paying gigs, he cooks up a...

Exclusive: New Restoration of Robert Frank and Rudy Wurlitzer’s Cult Classic Candy Mountain Coming to Theaters This Fall
Image
100 years ago this fall, Robert Frank was born. The legendary Swiss-born photographer and filmmaker has a number of centenary celebrations, including the first-ever solo exhibition of his work to be presented at the Museum of Modern Art starting in September, and now one of his features has been restored and will receive a theatrical rollout beginning soon after.

Candy Mountain, which Frank co-directed with novelist/screenwriter Rudy Wurlitzer, follows a struggling musician who sets out to find the legendary guitar maker Elmore Silk, with whom he hopes to strike a deal to make himself rich and famous. Released in 1987, the cult classic features a cast including Kevin J O’Conner and Harris Yulin, as well as the legendary actress Bulle Ogier, and real-life music legends Tom Waits, Leon Redbone, Joe Strummer, Dr. John, David Johansen, and Arto Lindsay. Coming from Film Movement, they’ve set an October 25th theatrical release...

Ranking the 10 Best Scrooge Movies
Image
In 1843, London publishers Chapman & Hall released A Christmas Carol. Written by Charles Dickens and illustrated by John Leech, it was inspired in part by Dickens’s anger at inequality in his country, especially as it affected children. Despite its aversion to the upper classes, A Christmas Carol was an immediate hit among readers and critics. Given the book’s popularity, it’s no surprise that movie makers have picked up on the story many times. Between its clear redemption arc and ghostly premise, the story has everything that a good movie needs.

Still, not every adaptation of A Christmas Carol is created equal. So if you’re looking for the best of the worst man in film and literature, check out these ten great movies. And if you don’t like my picks, well, bah humbug I say.

10. Scrooged (1988)

On paper, Scrooged sounds like a home run. Bill Murray, in his ’80s glory,...

Tell Me Más: Lúconde Fuses Theater and Urbano in Her Debut Album
Image
Many popular musicians have created fictional alter egos as a way to explore new sonic avenues that they wish to experiment with. David Bowie had Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane, David Johansen had Buster Poindexter, Lady Gaga spent a whole season as Jo Calderone, and the less said about Garth Brooks's Chris Gaines era the better, but it certainly happened. For them, it's a kind of performance art - an expression of their interest in stepping out of their comfort zone and giving the endeavor a theatrical flair as well.

The debate about whether these could be considered merely publicity stunts is valid, but for some artists, there's a true creative desire to inhabit these personas. For Adriana Rivera, a Puerto Rican singer-songwriter, it's a culmination of her dream to merge two artistic outputs that have long fascinated and inspired her: music and acting. From this desire and its manifestation,...

The 10 Best 1992 Science Fiction Films Ranked
Image
The science fiction films of 1992 showcased a diverse range of genres, including cyberpunk noir, dystopian thrillers, and technology-gone-wrong stories. While lacking in tentpole franchises, the underrated '90s sci-fi B-movies kept the struggling genre together, incorporating elements of action and horror to create a unique and difficult-to-pin-down tone. Despite not being a banner year for science fiction, 1992 had its unforgettable highlights, including films like "The Lawnmower Man," "Freejack," and "Universal Soldier" that captivated audiences with their cutting-edge CGI and pulse-pounding excitement.

To assemble a list of 1992 science fiction films is to plumb the depths of cinema in the early '90s and discover a few hidden gems released in a truly weird year for movies. Coming off the science fiction high of the 1980s, the first handful of years of the burgeoning '90s struggled to find their cinematic identity despite more than a few bona fide blockbusters. Science fiction...

HBO's Vinyl Soundtrack Guide: Every Song & The History Behind It
Image
HBO's Vinyl soundtrack features iconic songs from the 1950s to the 1970s and covers by contemporary artists, capturing the music scene of 1970s New York City. The eclectic soundtrack blends hip-hop, punk, rock 'n' roll, and disco, showcasing both popular tracks and lesser-known artists from the era. Martin Scorsese and Mick Jagger curated the soundtrack using the Atlantic Records & Warner Bros. Records libraries, drawing on their firsthand experience and knowledge of the music of the time.

HBO's Vinyl soundtrack includes some of the most popular songs from the 1950s to the 1970s as well as covers of that music by contemporary artists. Vinyl comes from Martin Scorsese and the 2016 series depicts the music scene of New York City in the 1970s when sex and drugs were as synonymous with rock as "roll" was. However, for American Century Records founder and president Richie Finestra (Bobby Cannavale), hip-hop, punk, and disco's rising...

Emmy-Eligible Music Specials Had Selena Gomez, Ed Sheeran, U2 and Others Showing a Different Side
Image
More than ever, rock stars were TV stars in 2023 — in the form of subjects for television documentaries — and so were their brethren in pop, hip-hop, K-pop and Latin music. Some of these TV films or docuseries were vanity projects used to promote new albums, of course; others started off as “making of” projects and ended up catching a star in a moment of real psychological crisis. It wasn’t all cinema verité; historical overviews capturing the full breadth of an artist’s career or even a genre still had their place in the pop-doc landscape.

Four films or limited series stand out in the subgenre of docs that were initially commissioned to capture an album or tour and, through circumstances, evolved into something deeper or darker. “Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me” (Apple TV+) was going to be a tour documentary, but then, when an emotional breakdown caused her to pull off the road,...

David Johansen “Only Cringed Two Or Three Times” Watching ‘Personality Crisis: One Night Only’ – Sound & Screen TV
Image
David Johansen wasn’t an easy sell on a documentary about his music, even from director Martin Scorsese. Johansen says it was his family that talked him into letting Scorsese film his performance for the documentary Personality Crisis: One Night Only.

Now, he’s happy with the result — relatively.

“I only cringed two or three times during this film,” Johansen said at Deadline’s Sound and Screen: Television event. “I do live shows, they go up into the ether and they’re gone. So this is like a document of who I was at that moment.”

Record producer Jack Douglas joined Johansen onstage for the panel conversation. Douglas, the film’s music producer, has produced Johansen’s music going back to his time in the New York Dolls in the ‘70s.

“I’ve always been impressed by the lyrics,” Douglas said. “This band musically was more professional so they supported the lyrics.
