It’s hard to say The Boy and the Heron isn’t Hayao Miyazaki’s magnum opus. The 2024 drama film captivated audiences worldwide and earned its storied director his second Academy Award. Aside from its gorgeous visuals, Ghibli’s latest masterpiece drew in audiences with a multilayered story of human resilience and transformation. Its brightly colored fantasy settings often mask the semi-autobiographical narrative, but its jarring visions of war-torn Japan infrequently return audiences to the film’s roots.
