King Ghidorah Figure from Mondo

Mondo has launched pre-orders for a King Ghidorah vinyl figure designed by Urban Aztec. Priced at $275, it’s due out in December.

Limited to 700, the three-headed monster stands 12″ tall with a 19.5″ wingspan. Three attachable anti-gravity beams are included.

David Lynch Shirt from The Frida Cinema

The Frida Cinema in Santa Ana is celebrating Pride Month with a David Lynch shirt featuring his Twin Peaks quote, “Fix your hearts or die.”

It costs $25, with 15% of sales donated to The Trevor Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to suicide prevention and crisis intervention for LGBTQ+ youth.

Betty Anne Rees, who portrayed tough women who weren’t very nice in The Unholy Rollers and Sugar Hill, two 1970s offerings from the B-movie factory American International Pictures, has died. She was 81.

Rees died Monday at her home in Hemet, California, after a series of falls and a possible stroke, her niece, Kathleen Loucks, told The Hollywood Reporter. She also was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in the early 1990s.

The Ohio native played Janet Ingram, the secretary for Fred MacMurray’s Steve Douglas, on the last of My Three Sons’ 12 seasons in 1971-72. (Abby Dalton was Janet on an episode three years earlier.)

In The Unholy Rollers (1972), directed by Vernon Zimmerman, Rees portrayed Mickey Martinez, a star of the Los Angeles Avengers roller derby team who does not get along with popular new player Karen Walker (1970 Playboy Playmate of the Year Claudia Jennings).

Following the announcement of their Women with Guts conference taking place this May, Salem Horror Fest is giving genre fans another reason to mark their calendars with the announcement of their dates and first guest for their annual October celebration.

As announced on their website, Salem Horror Fest 2020 will take place from Thursday, October 1st to Sunday, October 11th at The Bridge at 211.

The festival's eclectic lineup of guests and events will be announced in the coming months, but the first special guest has already been revealed, and it's a special treat for horror fans who have fond memories of watching MonsterVision or currently enjoy Shudder's The Last Drive-In, because horror host and journalist Joe Bob Briggs will be on hand for his live presentation of How Rednecks Saved Hollywood, taking place on Saturday, October 10th.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences made statements about inclusion, diversity, gender equity and creative risk-taking on Sunday night at the 11th annual Governors Awards, but it also learned a big lesson as it was making those statements.

The lesson: Sometimes, it doesn’t matter what else you do, because somebody is going to come along and steal the whole damn show.

In this case, that somebody was Lina Wertmüller, the 91-year-old Italian director who was given an Honorary Academy Award for provocative, groundbreaking films that included “The Seduction of Mimi,” “Love and Anarchy,” “Swept Away” and “Seven Beauties,” the 1977 film for which she became the first woman ever nominated for Best Director.

These days, cinema buffs searching high and low for a lost, early work of a modern filmmaker is almost unheard of , as most everything is readily available on DVD or Blu-ray. However, back in the day, this was far from the case. Way back when, many early efforts from then current directorial masters were extremely hard to find. For example, throughout the 1980s, I can remember looking everywhere for a copy of George A. Romero’s third film Season of the Witch aka Hungry Wives (1972) as well as Martin Scorsese’s debut feature Who’s That Knocking at My Door? (1967) just to name a few. Another movie I always longed to see was a strange, little action film called Fast Company. Webster University’s Strange Brew film series, the first Wednesday evening of every month, always features a fun cult movie at the Schlafly Bottleworks Restaurant and Bar in Maplewood (7260 Southwest Ave. – at Manchester – Maplewood, Mo 63143). Suspiria, The Twilight Zone Movie, Head, and Tarantula are a few of the movies they’ve screened in the past that went well with some St. Louis-brewed suds and next week, December 7th, they’re venturing into Not Available on DVD territory with the 1974 swampsploitation opus Gator Bait starring ’70s Drive-in goddess Claudia Jennings.

Imagine if Russ Meyer had directed Deliverance and that might give you an idea of the berserk backwoods hijinks to be found in Gator Bait. It’s a simple story about murder and retribution starring the heavenly Jennings as Desiree Thibodeau, a ‘purty’ rural wildcat who hunts down the bunch of toothless hillbillies who had raped and killed her younger sister.

With the words “Action Packed” adorning the upper portion of the latest release from Shout! Factory and their long running series of genre films from the iconic B-movie God himself, Roger Corman, the latest Corman Cult Classics set is quite an interesting one.

A relatively bare bones triple feature, the “Action Packed Collection” edition of this series features three of Corman’s New World Films more action heavy products. Georgia Peaches, The Great Texas Dynamite Chase and Smokey Bites The Dust all get their day in the sun here. And while this release itself may not be the strongest features wise, these are three of the more interesting releases to see the light of day thanks to Shout! Factory.

When deciding on a movie to watch, you are hard pressed to go wrong when picking a film adorned with the title of “Roger Corman Cult Classics” right at the top of the case.

The genuine geniuses over at Shout! Factory have been slowly but surely knocking it out of the ballpark with each subsequent release of this massively expansive set, detailing cult classics like Death Race 2000, and rarely seen gems like Galaxy Of Terror.

The series has produced DVDs that not only have fantastic transfers, but also rather expansive special features, ranging from hour long documentaries, to interviews with Corman himself.

However, Shout! Factory may have finally hit a little bump in the road.

Another pair of offerings from In2Film’s Roger Corman Collection and this time we venture forward into the 70’s, to two movies that span the spectrum of Corman’s career as a film producer. From the good: Grand Theft Auto, which marked the directorial debut of Happy Days actor Ron Howard; to the not so good: Deathsport.

However, the car crashes are the real stars of a film that marked the directorial debut of one of Hollywood’s most successful filmmakers.

With Piranha and Humanoids from the Deep getting all the love lately in the news, we'd be remiss if we did not mention two other Corman cult classics that are poised to make their special edition double-feature DVD debut from Shout! Factory.

Roller Derby, a sport that peeked in popularity in the early 70’s, is based on formation roller skating around an oval track, with points scored as certain (mostly female) players lap members of the opposing team. Judging by last week’s poor box-office performance of Whip It, it appears that Roller Derby is not a fad currently in vogue, but Drew Barrymore’s new film gives me an excuse to revisit the greatest movie of all about the rough, tough world of this trashy sports phenomenon. That would be 1974’s Unholy Rollers, starring the late Claudia Jennings, a grimy, low-brow slice of 70’s exploitation that perfectly captures the grimy, low-brow sport that is roller derby. From its then-trendy premise, to its goofy use of humor, to its energetic but clumsy execution, Unholy Rollers is truly one hell of an entertaining R-rated 70’s time capsule but one that is Not available on DVD.

This July and August, the UCLA Film & Television Archive in Los Angeles, California is screening a series of horror and thriller films directed by women called No She Didn't!: Women Exploitation Auteurs. From July 24th through August 8th, films like Terminal Island (directed by Stephanie Rothman), Bad Girls Go To Hell and Another Day, Another Man (directed by Doris Wishman), Gaitor Bait (directed by Beverly Sebastian), Bury Me an Angel (directed by Barbra Peters), and Slumber Party Massacre (directed by Amy Holden-Jones) will be screened in their full exploitation glory.
