Pet Shop Boys’ Neil Tennant Questions If Taylor Swift Has a “Billie Jean” in Her Catalog
Image
Pet Shop Boys vocalist Neil Tennant has questioned whether Taylor Swift has a song as “famous” as Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean.”

During a conversation with The Guardian’s head rock and pop critic Alexis Petridisi livestreamed earlier this week, the topic turned to the ubiquitous pop star. While Tennant admitted Swift is a compelling figure, the singer said he finds her actual music “disappointing.”

“Taylor Swift sort of fascinates me as a phenomenon because she’s so popular and I sort of quite like the whole thing,” Tennant said. “But then when I listen to the records — we both have the same feeling actually — for a phenomenon as big [as she is]… where are the famous songs? What is Taylor Swift’s ‘Billie Jean’?”

After an audience member brought up “Shake It Off,” Tennant responded: “Is it though? No, ’cause I actually even know that that’s the answer,...

Lisa Marie Presley Dead At 54: The Ups And Downs Of Elvis’ Daughter’s Life
Image
Lisa Marie Presley, the daughter of Elvis and Priscilla Presley, died on Jan. 12 at the age of 54 after suffering a cardiac arrest at her home in Calabasas. Her sudden death came as shock to many, her family included. A rep for the Presley family released a statement announcing the devastating news Thursday evening.

“Priscilla Presley and the Presley family are shocked and devastated by the tragic death of their beloved Lisa Marie,” a rep for the family confirmed to Et. “They are profoundly grateful for the support, love and prayers of everyone, and ask for privacy during this very difficult time.”

The only daughter of Elvis Presley and Priscilla Presley, Lisa Marie was born in Memphis, Tennessee and split her time between Los Angeles and Memphis as a child. Growing up, she followed in her father’s footsteps, making music of her own. She would go on to have several high-profile relationships,...

Dodgers Donate A Million Dollars To The Elton John AIDS Foundation, Singer Mentions His Deep L.A. Connection In Penultimate Show
Image
The Los Angeles Dodgers made a 1 million donation to the Elton John AIDS Foundation last night during the penultimate show of his final North American tour.

John was the attraction for three sold-out shows at Dodger Stadium, concluding tonight and supposedly ending the 75-year-old’s touring days in North America.

John gave a heartfelt thank-you to Los Angeles on Saturday night. He acknowledged that his career took off in Los Angeles, thanks to a magical night at the Troubadour. He thanked former Los Angeles Times music critic Robert Hilburn for chronicling that show, and also mentioned his iconic 1975 date at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles as one of the reasons he wanted to conclude his run in Los Angeles at the same venue.

“I am thrilled to play my three final shows of my Farewell Yellow...

Darren Hayes review, Homosexual: A proud and simple reclamation
Image
“Yes, baby I’m a homosexual,” sings Darren Hayes over the shimmering Eighties pulse of his first solo album in a decade. This may not seem like much of a newsflash from the man who’s been married to his partner, Richard Cullen, for 17 years. But in recent interviews, the former Savage Garden frontman has spoken tearfully about his most successful years being in the closet, then straight-washed by the music industry when he found the courage to come out.

Shooting the video for his last single, “Insatiable” (2012), he’d been told he looked “too gay”. Now 50, he found himself watching artists such as Troye Sivan and Lil Nas X “just arrive as their authentic selves”. He realised how angry he was that his hard-won self-expression had been “extinguished by men in suits”.

While the title of his new record, Homosexual, is a proud and simple reclamation of the word that once scared Hayes,...

Cornell's Billie Jean Cover Enjoys American Idol Sales Boost
Sales of Chris Cornell's cover of Michael Jackson classic Billie Jean have increased by 300 per cent following a wannabe's performance of the track on American Idol.

Former Soundgarden and Audioslave rocker Cornell recorded a dark, growling version of Jackson's 1982 track for his 2007 album Carry On.

And following American Idol contestant David Cook's "note-for-note" version of Cornell's cover on the U.S. TV talent show last week, fans have clamoured to download the track online.

Cornell says, "You can clearly see that the judges are giving this guy credit for it on national television. My fans were like, 'Wait a minute! That's Chris Cornell's moment.'

"Don't get me wrong. He sang it great. But it was literally a note-for-note take on what I came up with.

"At the end of the day, it's all good. It's a good thing for me. There was a moment when I was sitting there writing this new arrangement thinking, `Is this a good idea or a bad idea?'

"Watching the response from the judges was really gratifying. They were signing off on it right there."...

American Idol 7: Top 10 Performance Rankings
American Idol's top ten performed tonight and the theme was a massive sham. According to Ryan Seacrest, the theme of the night was “songs from the year you were born.” Every American Idol contestant would perform songs recorded the year they were born. However, almost half of the singers cheated. Apparently, it was Ok for the contestants to do songs that were recorded long before they born (or conceived, or even before their parents met) if those same songs were re-recorded by no-name artists in their year of birth. Just once, I'd like American Idol to say "we cleared a bunch of random songs from all different time periods and the singers chose from the list we gave them." No one really cares about the theme, especially if the various songs are going to span genres anyway. Tonight's episode was better than last week, and I have no real...

'Billie Jean' Trespasses At Jackson's Neverland Ranch
