Subhash K Jha lists the best performances by Girish Karnad in this special feature.
He was a man of many talents: scholar, academician, activist, political commentator, theatre and film actor. But Bollywood knows him for his understated performances in unforgettable films in the 1970s and 80s, which changed the way we look at mainstream acting. Here’s a list of his best Bollywood films.
1. Nishant (1975): Playing the docile, helpless school teacher whose wife (Shabana Azmi) is abducted by the village zamindar, Karnad brought dignity and restraint into a situation which screamed for dramatic eruptions. Karnad never overacted. He was measured at a time when drama flourished.
2. Swami (1977): This was the second film where Girish Karnad starred as the silent, undemanding, doting spouse to Shabana Azmi, and this time he was even more of a brilliant projectile, hitting the right emotions. In this superb adaptation of Saratchandra Chatterjee’s novel,...

Subhash K Jha is once again focussing on a film that is well, maybe, not the best in this edition of This Day That Drivel: as he revisits Bharat Bhagya Vidhata, which released in 2002.
If only wishes were cabinet portfolios. Bihari Babu Shatrughan Sinha plays an idealistic Home Minister battling militancy in the Valley. The Kashmir problem was so poorly depicted in Vinod Chopra’s Mission Kashmir and Tinu Verma’s Maa Tujhe Salaam that any attempt to tackle the core issue, albeit on a basic and simplistic level, raises our interest level in the potboiler genre of the Hindi commercial cinema.
Director Osho Raja, who earlier made some unsuccessful mixed-up mainstream films under his real name Ashok Tyagi, tackles the issue on a strictly “filmy” level. Except for the conflicted militant Shabbir (Chandrachur Singh), the characters are all one-dimensional heroes from the Indian government services and villains, naturally from...

Celebrating Lara Dutta on her birthday as Subhash K Jha shines a special spotlight on her career. We hear from the actress about being an actress in Bollywood, plus Suneel Darsha, director of her debut film, gives some behind-the-scenes scoop from the set.
She was named Lara after the heroine in her mother’s favourite film Dr Zhivago. In an industry of hyper-hypocrisy, she was honest. No false smiles, no sucking up to directors and heroes. No compromises: Priyanka Chopra and Lara Dutta started off together in my friend Suneel Darshan’s Andaaz. Between the two, I thought Lara was going to be the big star. She had the better role in Andaaz, and she went on to give some good performances in films like Dilli Chalo, Billu, and David. But her career never took off in the way it should have.

In this fascinating feature, Subhash K Jha looks back at the incredible career of writer, director and actor, the brilliant Lekh Tandon.
Recently Anil Kapoor spoke about how the 1980 film Ek Baar Kaho changed the course of his career. The long post made mention of everyone, from the film’s luminous leading lady, Shabana Azmi, to the producers, Rajshri Productions. But Anil forgot to mention Lekh Tandon, who directed Ek Baar Kaho!
This was the story of Lekh Tandon’s life: his films got recognition. He didn’t. Lekh Tandon was one of our most prolific and underrated directors. His range stretched from the playful Professor to the magical Dulhan Wohi Jo Piya Man Bhaye to the illogical Jahan Pyar Mile. His most celebrated film was the historical Amrapali (1966), which recreated the legendary romance between Amrapali, the courtesan, played by Vyjayanthimala, and Ajayshatru, the emperor of Magadh, played by Sunil Dutt.

‘Bhed Chaal’ is a Hindi proverb very much used in relation to the Hindi film industry. It means that one huge success is followed by numerous other attempts. Original ideas are at a premium in the Hindi film industry. The makers either depend on a foreign film, or a novel, or a South Indian film for a subject.
Filmmakers always want to play safe because the risk factor is always high. The distributor, while being wined and dined, gets a sales pitch, like “Zanjeer se kam nahi hamari picture…” and such. Many smaller-budget imitations of ‘Sholay’, ‘Zanjeer’, ‘Deewaar’ and other such films flooded the market. That is to say, if one action film worked, many more were certain to follow.

She said: “I remember right before we shot for this ‘Mujhe Naulakha Manga De Re’ song, Amit ji happened to injure his hand during Diwali. In a part of the song, he was playing ghungroo (ankle bells), but because he was in pain and already injured, he used to end up bleeding every time he shot for the scene. Regardless, by keeping his hand in the ice box back and forth, he finished shooting the scene. His commitment and focus are an example for every artist to learn from. I have learned so much from him.”
Jaya is known for working in Telugu and Hindi cinema.

As he turns 80 on October 11, the living legend Amitabh Bachchan – Bollywood’s biggest superstar in its 110-years’ history – can look back with satisfaction at his long career on the silver screen, where he became a icon along with a galaxy of leading ladies.
It was in 1969 – when man landed on the moon – that Bachchan took his first small step with “Saat Hindustani”, which ultimately proved to be a gigantic leap for his megastar-dom.
But he stood out in his maiden film – in the crowd of six other actors jostling for screen space in the pacey thriller themed on the Goa Liberation – with the sole female revolutionary – Shahnaz Vahanvati (daughter of the comedian Agha), gunning to free the west Indian territory from Portuguese clutches.

InterviewFrom once being type-cast as the ‘chocolate boy’ to finding that he got a kick out of roles that challenged him, Kunchacko Boban speaks to Tnm on the films that played game-changers, his brief break from films, and more.CrisImage Courtesy: Facebook/AdwaithShineA vague figure on a motorcycle rides into a long bridge, taking on pillion, the woman walking towards him. On screen they are both blurry, moving to a sad title song, introducing the two as actors making their debuts as grownups. Shalini, who had been a popular child actor, barely needed introduction - she was the little girl with the bangs who won a lot of love in the 80s. Kunchacko Boban, the hero of the film, had only one role as a child that he barely remembered. He was therefore introduced in big block letters in Aniyathipravu, a movie that would be celebrated as a romantic classic in the late 90s.

Flix FlashbackDirector Blessy’s 2011 film starring Mohanlal, Jaya Prada and Anupam Kher is complex, intense and often messy, but tugs at our heartstrings.Neelima MenonFacebook/ BlessyRomance is a genre that has not been explored to its full potential in Malayalam cinema. We have had very few films that delved deep into love, romance and lust. Mostly Malayalam cinema has paid obeisance to the culmination of romance before legalising it. The aftermath of love in marriages, or more specifically how it evolves as a couple ages, has been fleetingly explored in Oru Cheru Punchiri and Minnaminginte Nurungu Vettam. They were more sterile and tender depictions that left a warm glow and hope in our hearts. But in Pranayam (2011), director Blessy goes deeper into marriage, love and desire, and attempts to understand how couples manifest heartbreak, second chances, and old age in the long run. Blessy places his narrative in the backdrop...

She will play the lead actor’s mother, Pramila Rathod, who has many shades to her character. An expressive, confident and righteous modern woman, she shows her mettle when she has to choose between right and wrong. The actress says, “Like all firsts, I’m sure it’s going to be formidable, yet a special experience. The medium of television is immensely powerful and it’s refreshing to know that such evolved and strong characters, and women-oriented stories are being written on this medium. KollywoodThe film tries to address every issue imaginable, not giving enough time for any of them to develop sufficiently.Rakesh MeharHaving just lost her husband in a tragic set of circumstances, Indira (Jaya Prada) returns to his ancestral home in the village of Puliyanmalai to find a way to rebuild her life. But fate has more in store, as the desperately drought-stricken village on the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border has only one possible source of drinking water – an old well on Indira’s property. In a cruel twist, however, a resurvey has transferred a portion of the land with the well to the neighbouring village. As the village residents struggle without water, there is a cabal of politicians waiting to drive them out and take over the land for profit. Indira has to fight powerful forces to give her fellow residents a chance at life. In summary, the plot of the Tamil-Malayalam bilingual Keni sounds powerful and moving, a timely and hard-hitting drama. Unfortunately, writer and director Ma Nishad, takes a strong plot backed by an amazing set of actors, including Revathy, Nasser, Parthiban, Anu Hassan and Rekha, and delivers a flat film that never quite gets off the ground. One of the biggest problems for Keni is that it wants to have its say about virtually every issue imaginable. So there are men falsely accused of terrorism and arrested under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (Uapa), women who face sexual harassment from cops, corrupt politicians, water wars, poverty, debates about journalistic ethics and a whole lot more. By the time Nishad has delivered his sermons on all of these, there’s little time left for any of these issues to develop into any kind of dramatic conflict. The film also struggles to throw up a powerful heroine in Indira, and loses the chance to put on centre stage the important issues it is trying to deal with. So you hear nearly every other cast member talk about how man’s greed creates drought, and how the compassion of a woman helps sustain life and create an agricultural utopia in the village. But, as Indira’s story unfolds, you’re left wondering just what the revolution is that she heralds. The film also finds itself burdened by a weak performance by Jaya Prada, who adeptly conveys the vulnerability of a woman whose life is initially turned upside down, but never rises up to deliver the heroic punch the script demands of her. The rest of the cast is fairly wasted, since they are only required to appear at regular intervals with sage sermons about the hardships caused by the human propensity to draw artificially dividing lines in the ground. That doesn’t mean that there isn’t anything enjoyable in Keni. Pleasing visuals in an aesthetically captivating landscape and lilting melodies provide agreeable distractions in the film. Even the plotting shows the seeds of dramatic possibilities, with devices such as three journalists who come by different routes to the same story of Indira’s struggle. But all of these are sapped by sluggish storytelling. In the end, Keni is much like the bilingual song “Ayya Saami”, sung by Kj Yesudas and Sp Balasubrahmanyam at the start of the film. Genial and overflowing with old-fashioned platitudes, but lacking any real commitment to deal with the grainy details of reality. Disclaimer: This review was not paid for or commissioned by anyone associated with the film. Neither Tnm nor any of its reviewers have any sort of business relationship with the film's producers or any other members of its cast and crew.
