The Dark Knight's Joker Pencil Kill Is A Batman 1989 Homage
Image
The Dark Knight's Joker may have been a departure from any other live-action adaptation of the character, but his most famous kill still managed to pay homage to Jack Nicholson's maniacal supervillain from 1989's Batman film. Heath Ledger's Joker has been widely celebrated as one of the best versions of the iconic character in history, even earning the actor a posthumous Academy Award, though Nicholson's brief stint as the supervillain remains a favorite as well. The former's infamous pencil kill in The Dark Knight actually manages to connect the two Jokers in a surprising and brutal way that many viewers might have overlooked.

Heath Ledger's supervillain was introduced with The Dark Knight ignoring questions of Joker's origin. Instead, the film opts to introduce Batman's archnemesis in a truly memorable fashion, including several scenes of obscene and grisly murders. The stand-out scene, however, includes Joker asking a group...

10 Years Later, ‘The Dark Knight’ Cinematographer Is Still Shocked Nolan Avoided R-Rating
Christopher Nolan at an event for Inception (2010)
Christopher Nolan’s superhero epic “The Dark Knight” celebrated its 10th anniversary this year, and with it has come no shortage of articles looking back on the making of the game-changing genre movie. Vulture recently published an oral history of the infamous pencil trick scene, in which Heath Ledger’s Joker makes a pencil disappear by slamming a gangster’s head into it. The scene alone led cinematographer Wally Pfister to believe the movie was heading to an inevitable R-rating.

“It’s kind of shocking that ‘The Dark Knight’ ended up being PG-13,” Pfister said. “All of Chris’s movies would be PG-13 to open it up to a wider audience. Somehow, he always had some magic with the MPAA. Lo and behold, he has the pencil and I’m like, ‘You are not getting the PG-13 with that. There’s no way this is going in. He’s driving...

Joker's Dark Knight Pencil Trick Secret Finally Revealed
Christopher Nolan at an event for Inception (2010)
Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight is often hailed as one of the best superhero movies. Even after a decade of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Nolan's trilogy still towers above the rest. It's been ten years since Heath Ledger played one of the best Jokers on the big screen, and since the movie's release, many fans have wondered about the infamous pencil trick that the villain performs. Upon watching the movie for the first time, the pencil trick scene came off as one of the more brutal moments. Thankfully, we now know how the trick was performed.

The Dark Knight pencil scene happens when the Joker is trying to assemble a mob crew to take down Batman. He takes a pencil out of his pocket, stabs it into a table, leaving it standing straight up, and asks if anyone wants to see a magic trick and watch a pencil disappear.
