Revisiting Raveena’s Maatr As It Turns 8, Raveena Speaks
Image
Raveena Tandon speaks on the issue of the film in this special feature as Subhash K Jha revisits her Maatr, which released in 2017.

In Maatr, Raveena Tandon takes on the subject of rape with a brutal force. The film lays open some ugly truths about the way the judicial system fails a rape victim.

A raucous raga on the aftermath of rape, much of Maatr unfolds in a stern humourless no-nonsense manner of a fact-finding newshound who won’t go into digressions—because the film’s heroine knows what one wrong turn can do– just to keep the audience’s perception lightened.Which is for the best, really. In India, we can’t afford to laugh about rape the way the French could in the film Elle.

Maatr strips the act of rape of all its filmy glamour and titillating trappings to portray the agony of a woman who watches...

It was recently announced that Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla are set to share space on the big screen, for the first time, in Anubhav Sinha’s upcoming film Gulab Gang.

Now it has been revealed that Tannishtha Chatterjee, the award winning actress from the British film Brick Lane and more recently Anna Karenina, is all set to join the star cast.

Tannishtha Chatterjee is all set to take on the role of Madhuri’s chief lieutenant, but the actress only accepted the role after the part was re-written for her.

On the subject, a source told the media, “She read the script and loved it. It was her first mainstream Hindi offer. But her role was skimpy and sketchy. Tannishtha asked for it to be fleshed out.”

Anurag Kashyap
That Girl in Yellow Boots:Kashyap, Kalki and The Unholy Father!
Anurag Kashyap
Director: Anurag Kashyap, Writers: Kalki Koechlin and Anurag Kashyap, Cinematographer: Rajeev Ravi, Actors: Kalki Koechlin, Naseeruddin Shah, Gulshan Devaiya, Divya Jagdale

That Girl in Yellow Boots (Tgiyb) is set in a godless, libidinous and bureaucratic Mumbai. Its warm tone is just a facade for an utterly gloomy and pessimistic world of this film that director Anurag Kashyap tries to fill with a bit of colour by making his protagonist Ruth wear yellow boots. Her boots also signify her quest of a lost father, “who loves her unconditionally”. Whether she will find her father is a mystery.

Ruth (Kalki Koechlin), a white skinned British national, 20, has been living in India for past one year on a personal mission to find her father whom she doesn’t even recognize; and he seems to have even changed his name. She supports herself by working in a dingy massage parlour where “happy ending” has a sexual connotation.
