Disney Nearly Canceled This $170 Million Animated Film That's Still a Hit 25 Years Later
Image
Today, The Emperor’s New Groove is a cultural touchstone. Its quirky humor and countless quotable moments have turned the 2000 film into a mainstay of internet culture. It’s one of Disney Animation Studio’s many retrospective post-renaissance hits, but it almost failed to make it to theaters.

Despite its now-iconic peculiarities and many subsequent spin-offs, Mark Dindal’s hilarious masterpiece barely escaped the budgetary axe. Originally called Empire of the Sun, the project was originally headed by Roger Allers and Matthew Jacobs. Notably, neither name appears in the credits’ directorial section. That discrepancy is just one of many pieces in the tenuous tapestry that is The Emperor’s New Groove. Unlike its characteristically smooth animation, the now-beloved Disney film suffered a wild, rocky development journey. In fact, its original version barely resembles the final product.

Despite its sustained success in recent years, The Emperor’s New Groove was...

‘Safe House’ To Open Göteborg Film Festival

Eirik Svensson’s Safe House (Før Mørket) will kick of the 48th Göteburg Film Festival on January 24, 2025. The film’s screenplay, written by Harald Rosenløw Eeg and Lars Gudmestad, is based on real events from the autobiography ‘Det Finnes Ingen de Andre – Det er Bare Oss” by Lindis Hurum, Secretary General of Doctors Without Borders in Norway. It’s set during the civil war in the Central African Republic in 2013, when on Christmas Eve, a desperate Muslim man seeks refuge at a field hospital, while a threatening Christian militia gathers outside, demanding his life. Norwegian aid worker Linn (Kristine Kujath Thorp) faces a series of moral dilemmas as she strives to protect the man without endangering her colleagues’ safety. Alexander Karim, Bibi Tanga, Mattis Hermann Nyquist, Tracy Gotoas, and Alma Pöysti are also among the cast. Safe — which is from Fantefilm and co-produced with Film i Väst,...

Christopher Eccleston, Peter Capaldi, David Tennant, Matt Smith, and Jodie Whittaker in Doctor Who (2005)
Doctor Who | TV movie writer reunites with Paul McGann to pen new audio story
Christopher Eccleston, Peter Capaldi, David Tennant, Matt Smith, and Jodie Whittaker in Doctor Who (2005)
Doctor Who TV movie writer Matthew Jacobs has reunited with Paul McGann for a new Big Finish audio story.

To date, Paul McGann’s total screen time as the Doctor clocks in at under two hours, and the majority of that can be credited to screenwriter Matthew Jacobs, who penned the 1996 TV Movie. Though it’s perhaps not the most beloved piece of Doctor Who media, most fans now acknowledge that it’s an important bridge between the classic series and the glossy sheen and higher production values of the revived show.

The film saw Sylvester McCoy’s Seventh Doctor land in Los Angeles on New Year’s Eve 1999, before promptly being gunned down outside the Tardis. He regenerates into Paul McGann’s Eighth Doctor, and teams up with Doctor Grace Holloway (Daphne Ashbrook) to fight The Master, who’s taken over the body of a paramedic (Eric Roberts) and...

The Director Of Horror Classic Candyman Got His Start In The Wildest Way Possible
Image
"Candyman" was first concocted by horror maestro Clive Barker in the form of a short story called "The Forbidden." Released as part of the fifth volume of his "Books of Blood" series, the story was eventually transformed into what would become Bernard Rose's 1992 hit slasher and remains one of the best horror movies ever made. The figure of Candyman, played famously by Tony Todd, has transcended into the realm of iconic — and spawned a franchise featuring three direct sequels throughout the '90s and Nia DaCosta's criminally underrated "Candyman" from 2021. The importance and impact of the original "Candyman" cannot be overstated, and Bernard Rose's keen eye and unique grasp of presenting the horrors of an urban legend come to life has been sparking nightmares for over three decades.

Before Rose stepped into Cabrini-Green with the dulcet tones of Philip Glass' score, he directed films like "Smart Money," "Body Contact,...

‘Red, White and Royal Blue’ rave reviews: Prime Video’s #1 movie is ‘endearing,’ ‘aspirational’ and one ‘doozy’ of a rom-com
Image
On August 11, 2023, Amazon Prime Video released “Red, White & Royal Blue,” which quickly became the streamer’s most-watched film worldwide. Certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with an audience score of 94%, the critics consensus reads, “Amusing and endearing, ‘Red, White & Royal Blue’ is a cheerfully formulaic rom-com that embraces inclusion without falling back on stereotypes.”

In his directorial debut, Matthew Lopez helms the film based on Casey McQuiston‘s bestselling novel. Taylor Zakhar Perez plays Alex Claremont-Diaz, the son of American President Ellen Claremount (Uma Thurman). His feud with Britain’s Prince Henry (Nicholas Galitzine) threatens to drive a wedge in U.S./British relations, and the two are forced into a staged truce that sparks something deeper. Paramount Global to Pay $122 Million to Settle Shareholder Suits Over Viacom-cbs Merger
Image
Paramount Global disclosed on Friday that it will pay $122.5 million to settle lawsuits from Viacom shareholders arising from the company’s merger with CBS.

In a securities filing, the company revealed that it has agreed to settle the class action litigation now pending in the Delaware Court of Chancery. The settlement still requires judicial approval.

The plaintiffs had alleged that Paramount Global’s chairwoman, Shari Redstone, ousted board members in a “tyrannical” effort to merge the two companies. The suit alleged that CBS stock was overpriced in the merger, and that Viacom was undervalued, causing harm to Viacom shareholders.

The suit alleged that Redstone’s handpicked board members were conflicted, and did not pursue the best price on behalf of Viacom’s minority shareholders. When the merger was first contemplated in 2018, the suit alleged that Viacom was given an implied value of $12.8 billion. That effort collapsed, but the companies tried again a year later.

Why There Has Never Been A Bad Doctor Who
Image
There's a long-standing belief among the Doctor Who audience that there is no such thing as a bad Doctor, only bad production decisions, and this detail holds true to this day. It's unsurprising that a show which has been around for almost six decades occasionally experiences dips in quality or finds the creative well running dry. However, the failings of any particular Doctor's era or episodes are never the fault of the actor, despite what vocal minorities on social media may claim.

Tom Baker, who played the Fourth Doctor from 1974-1981 once observed that Doctor Who was actor-proof and that no single actor had ever failed in the role. As the longest-running and most popular Doctor of them all, it would be hard to disagree with Baker's assertion. Despite Doctor Who facing cancelation at several points in its history, the show has endured, and key to that endurance is its...

David Strathairn (‘A Little Prayer’) generates early 2024 Oscar buzz: It’s the ‘defining performance of his career’
Image
Sony Pictures Classics has made many wise investments at the Sundance Film Festival over the years. Its 2022 acquisition, “Living,” just nabbed Oscar nominations for Best Actor, Bill Nighy, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Other recent Sundance titles propelled to the Oscars by the studio include “The Father” (2020), “Call Me By Your Name” (2017), “Whiplash” (2014) and “An Education” (2009). Amy Adams’ very first career bid came for “Junebug,” which the distributor picked up from Park City in 2005. That film’s writer, Angus MacLachlan, is the director of “A Little Prayer,” one of Sony Pictures Classics’ 2023 festival purchases (the other being Audience Award winner “The Persian Version”).

Starring David Strathairn as Bill Brass, the movie is about a soft-spoken North Carolina family man who, per official synopsis, “tests the limits of patriarchal interference” after discovering that his son, David (Will Pullen), has been having an extramarital affair. In breach of Southern hospitality, which prescribes minding one’s own affairs,...

‘Welcome to Chippendales’ reviews: Kumail Nanjiani and Annaleigh Ashford give ‘commanding performances’; Golden Globes next?
Image
“Welcome to Chippendales” had its Hulu premiere on November 22, earning rave reviews for Robert Siegel‘s limited series starring Kumail Nanjiani, Annaleigh Ashford, Murray Bartlett, and Juliette Lewis. The dramatic true story currently holds an impressive 93 freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes, signaling overwhelming approval from critics.

The series is inspired by the book Deadly Dance: The Chippendales Murders by K. Scot Macdonald and Patrick MontesDeOca. It tells the origin story of Somen “Steve” Banerjee (played by Nanjiani), an Indian American entrepreneur who started the stripper troupe, Chippendales.

Early buzz for the show has already launched it into the awards conversation. In our Golden Globes predictions, “Welcome to Chippendales” ranks sixth for Best TV Movie/Limited Series, Nanjiani is in seventh for Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor and Bartlett and Lewis both sit in 10th position for Best TV Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress, respectively.

Doctor Who Am I review – a genial dive into the Whoniverse with one of its creators
Matthew Jacobs
Screenwriter Matthew Jacobs, who wrote Doctor Who: The Movie, plunges among fans of the sci-fi series to find out what makes Time Lord diehards tick

When Matthew Jacobs’s name is first displayed on screen in this likable documentary, he is identified as a “mid-level screenwriter”; it’s more of a self-deprecating description than a diss given that he is one of the film’s co-directors (along with Vanessa Yuille) as well as the feature’s star subject. But his filmography is a mixed bag, and includes several things you may never have heard of (Bar America and the cartoon Justin and the Knights of Valour), little remembered reworkings of established works, the original story for one of Disney’s least popular works (The Emperor’s New Groove), the film adaptation for one stone-cold British cult classic, and the script for 1996’s Doctor Who: The Movie.

That last title is the...

‘Doctor Who Am I’ Review
Image
Features: Matthew Jacobs, Paul McGann, Eric Roberts, Daphne Ashbrook | Directed by Vanessa Yuille, Matthew Jacobs

I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again, I’ll watch any good documentary even if I am not interested in the subject matter. Which leads me to see this documentary on the writer of the 1996 Doctor Who movie, Doctor Who Am I. It’s not that I’ve never seen Doctor Who, or that I dislike it at all. I’m just not that bothered by it. I’ve watched it every now and then throughout my life and it’s usually fine but I’ve never stuck with it. But, after a quick read of this movie’s synopsis I was certain I would enjoy it.

The movie follows Matthew Jacobs, the screenwriter of the 1996 Doctor Who film (a film that I did not realise was not well received), who...

‘The Good Fight’ final season reviews: ‘Must-watch,’ ‘most ambitious’ episodes ever
Image
In the sixth season premiere of “The Good Fight,” Christine Baranski’s Diane Lockhart tearfully shares with her new therapist that she wants “off the wheel” of political and legal insanity, and in true ‘Good Fight’ fashion, her tears are induced by teargas from the raging angst in the streets. Unfortunately, fans of the Paramount+ series will be teary-eyed, too, as Diane getting off the wheel means that after 60 episodes, the Robert King and Michelle King legal and political drama will sign off, ending a 13-year run that began with “The Good Wife.”

In these final episodes, Baranski’s Diane will struggle to process the fact that so much progress made over the past 50 years has receded, from reproductive and civil rights to the return of Cold War aggressions and threat of nuclear war. Audra McDonald’s Liz will confront a much different battle, sparring with the law firm’s...

S’all Good Man: These Emmy pundits think Bob Odenkirk can still win for ‘Better Call Saul’
Image
Beloved actor Bob Odenkirk currently comes in third place to win Best Drama Actor for “Better Call Saul,” according to Gold Derby’s Emmy predictions. His 5/1 racetrack odds tie him with 2020 winner Jeremy Strong (“Succession”) and put him behind leading contenders Lee Jung-jae (“Squid Game”) and Brian Cox (“Succession”). The other nominees are Adam Scott (“Severance”) and Jason Bateman (“Ozark”). But don’t count out Odenkirk’s Emmy chances just yet. In fact, he still has the unwavering support of six Experts, three Editors and three Top 24 Users.

The half-dozen Gold Derby Experts who predict Odenkirk will prevail on Monday night are Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Tim Gray (Variety), Debbie Day (Rotten Tomatoes), Matthew Jacobs (Thrillist), Susan King (Gold Derby) and Ken Tucker (unaffiliated). The three staff editors backing him are Rosen, Matt Noble and Riley Chow. And the trio of Top 24 Users are Thomas Dolby, Nakss and Giuliano Demonte.

‘Traveling Light’ Review: Stuck in Close Quarters, Staving Off Covid and Boredom
Image
Shot during the pandemic and set on May 30, 2020 — just a few days after the death of George Floyd during an arrest by the Minneapolis Police Department — “Traveling Light” is an experimental attempt at social commentary that fails to provide any insight, emotion or even entertainment of the most basic kind. Nearly a year after its weird-fit premiere at genre-focused Beyond Fest in Los Angeles, this scrappy Covid-era quickie from eclectic director Bernard Rose (who made the original “Candyman”) opens today in New York and Seattle, with other cities to follow.

It seems Rose was aiming for a loose riff on “The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie,” focusing on a gathering in the Hollywood Hills of the followers of a self-proclaimed guru/prophet (Danny Huston), where everyone drinks a concoction spiked with an unnamed hallucinogenic and eventually line-dances while chanting “Hare Hare,” even though there isn’t a single Hare Krishna in sight.

When funny men compete at the Emmys: Steve Martin vs. Martin Short (‘Only Murders in the Building’)
Image
When the 74th annual Emmy Award nominations were announced back in July, legendary comedy duo Steve Martin and Martin Short joined an incredibly short list of costars nominated in the Comedy Actor category for their performances on Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building.” Throughout all Emmy history, only four other sets of comedy acting pairs have landed nominations in this category in the same year. But now that they have accomplished this feat, could the internal competition keep either of them from netting the trophy?

The first duo of comedy actors to earn nominations in this category dates back to 1968, when Sebastian Cabot and Brian Keith were recognized for “Family Affair” but lost to Don Adams (“Get Smart”). Tony Randall and Jack Klugman had the longest streak of costar nominations in this category from 1971 to 1975: Klugman bested Randall in ’71 and ’73, but Randall had the last laugh by finally...

‘Doctor Who Am I’ Documentary About BBC Time Lord Snapped Up by Kaleidoscope Film Distribution (Exclusive)
Image
Award-winning Doctor Who doc “Doctor Who Am I” has been snapped up by Kaleidoscope Film Distribution, Variety can exclusively reveal.

Kaleidoscope are set to release “Doctor Who Am I” theatrically in the U.K. in October and are also repping international sales. Materials will be available to view at TIFF next month.

Marking Vanessa Yuille directorial debut, the documentary feature tells the story of the infamous 1996 “Doctor Who” TV film, which was produced during a gap in the TV series. It featured Paul McGann as the Time Lord but received disapprobation from fans, who were apparently unhappy at the suggestion the Doctor was half human, especially when he kissed his assistant Grace Holloway.

Matthew Jacobs wrote the standalone “Doctor Who” film and, in “Doctor Who Am I,” he reluctantly allows himself to be drawn back into the time period to examine the making of the production as well the reaction it inspired.

Emmy predictions: Can ‘Ted Lasso’ hold off ‘Hacks,’ ‘Only Murders’ and ‘Abbott’ in Best Comedy Series race?

“Ted Lasso” ruled the 2021 Emmys with 20 nominations and seven wins including Best Comedy Series. It got another 20 nominations in 2022, which is especially impressive since it was up against several shows that weren’t eligible last year like “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Barry,” and “Atlanta,” to name a few. Emmy front-runner for Best Drama Series is, you guessed it, ‘Succession,’ but it may not be a slam dunk

2020 Best Drama Series Emmy winner “Succession” went into the 2022 nominations as the front-runner to win again, and after it scored 25 bids, more than any other program in any genre, it remains the favorite. If Smart wins again for her role as legendary stand-up comedian Deborah Vance on the HBO Max comedy series, she would become the first person since Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Veep”) to claim consecutive victories in the category. Jld would go on to win six acting trophies in a row between 2012 and 2017, in addition to her three producing triumphs for “Veep” and her acting wins for “Seinfeld” and “The New Adventures of Old Christine.” Smart currently has four career Emmys on her mantel for “Hacks,” “Samantha Who?” and “Frasier” (twice).

The Emmy race between ‘Ted Lasso’ and ‘Hacks’ is closer than you think
Image
For this year’s Best Comedy Series battle, Gold Derby predicts reigning champ “Ted Lasso” will win again after walking away with last year’s statue. But the current Emmy race between “Ted Lasso” and “Hacks,” our predicted runner-up, is closer than you think. For starters, only eight comedies in Emmy history claimed the top prize for Season 1 and Season 2 (with the last being “Modern Family” 11 years ago), so history suggests we might see another show step up to the podium at the 2022 Emmys. Might an upset be in store?

At last year’s kudos, the Apple TV Plus feel-good sports laffer won seven total Emmys for series, actor (Jason Sudeikis), supporting actress (Hannah Waddingham), supporting actor (Brett Goldstein), casting, picture editing and sound mixing. Not to be outdone, the HBO Max show about a legendary stand-up comedian claimed three Emmys for actress (Jean Smart), directing (Lucia Aniello) and writing.

SAG Awards nail-biter: 12 experts evenly split between Kodi Smit-McPhee, Troy Kotsur
Image
Currently at Gold Derby, our 12 Experts from major media outlets are evenly split in their SAG Awards predictions for the supporting actor category. Six are going with Kodi Smit-McPhee (“The Power of the Dog”) and six are picking Troy Kotsur (“Coda”). Hmm, can we just declare a tie and call it a day?

Smit-McPhee has the support of Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Brian Truitt (USA Today), Peter Travers (ABC), Wilson Morales (BlackFilmandTV), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby) and Matthew Jacobs (unaffiliated). On the Netflix drama, Smit-McPhee plays Peter Gordon, a troubled teen in 1925 Montana who gets made fun of for his lisp and effeminate manner.

And Kotsur is forecasted to win by Jazz Tangcay (Variety), Nikki Novak (Fandango), Clayton Davis (Variety), Tariq Khan (Fox TV), Susan King (Gold Derby) and Tim Gray (Variety). As blue collar fisherman Frank Rossi, a deaf father of two, Kotsur has trouble bonding with his hearing daughter,...

Dear SAG Awards voters: Christine Baranski is at her best on ‘The Good Fight’ season 5
Image
Few television performances have grown as richly as Christine Baranski’s as attorney Diane Lockhart. Now in her 12th season of playing liberal feminist Diane – first on CBS’ “The Good Wife” and now on the Paramount+ spinoff “The Good Fight” – Baranski continues to unearth newfound complexities in her signature role but has yet to earn a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for her performance. For SAG voters, the show’s shocking and incisive fifth season should prove the ideal opportunity to recognize her for her work for the very first time.

In the fifth season of the legal and political drama, Baranski’s Diane must navigate a thorny situation surrounding her named partnership at a Black law firm now that Adrian Boseman (Delroy Lindo) has resigned. Though Diane and fellow named partner Liz Reddick (the equally impressive Audra McDonald) have become close colleagues, they disagree about the appropriateness of Diane leading an African American firm.

Watch out for ‘The White Lotus’ scene stealer Murray Bartlett at the SAG Awards
Image
Thirty years after his first onscreen role, Murray Bartlett has become an overnight sensation thanks to HBO’s “The White Lotus.” In the first installment of Mike White’s celebrated anthology series, Bartlett starred as the charismatic resort manager Armond, whose encounters with the privileged, newly-arrived guests lead to his unravelling. The popularity of the series and his captivating turn look likely to help Bartlett land his first Screen Actors Guild Award nomination.

Bartlett currently ranks fourth in our combined SAG odds for Movie/Mini Actor. He trails Emmy-winner Evan Peters (“Mare of Easttown”), Oscar Isaac (“Scenes from a Marriage”), and Emmy-winner Ewan McGregor (“Halston”), but sits ahead of Michael Keaton (“Dopesick”), who rounds out our projected five nominees. Six of our 10 SAG experts predict Bartlett will get the nomination and two – Matthew Jacobs and Peter Travers (ABC) – even forecast a win.

Oscar Experts now give edge to ‘Belfast’ over ‘The Power of the Dog’ in Best Picture race
Image
As the fall festivals started the Oscar ball rolling in September, Jane Campion‘s Netflix western “The Power of the Dog” skyrocketed to the top of our odds for Best Picture based on the combined Oscar predictions of thousands of Gold Derby users. As of Sunday, October 10, the film is still out front overall, but fellow fest favorite “Belfast” has slipped past it in the forecasts of the Expert film journalists we’ve surveyed.

It’s close, though. Six Experts are currently betting on Kenneth Branagh‘s period drama about the Troubles in Northern Ireland: Clayton Davis (Variety), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Tariq Khan (Fox TV), Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Sasha Stone (Awards Daily), and Jazz Tangcay (Variety). But five are still predicting “Power of the Dog”: Thelma Adams (Gold Derby), Matthew Jacobs, Susan King (Gold Derby), Wilson Morales (Black Film and TV), and Anne Thompson (IndieWire). And “Power...

Third time the charm: Richard Jenkins (‘The Humans’) has best Oscar odds in tight supporting actor race
Image
The third time might be the charm for Richard Jenkins, a two-time Oscar nominee who is the current front-runner to win Best Supporting Actor for “The Humans,” according to the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby readers. This comes as momentum starts to shift between two actors from another film, “The Power of the Dog.”

Jenkins gets leading odds of 5/1, with eight of the Expert journalists we’ve surveyed betting on him to win: Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Matthew Jacobs, Susan King (Gold Derby), Michael Musto (Queerty), Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Sasha Stone (Awards Daily), Peter Travers (Rolling Stone), and Susan Wloszczyna (Gold Derby).

Olivia Colman (‘The Lost Daughter’): From a surprise Emmy to another surprise Oscar? She’s rising in our odds
Image
If there’s one thing we should know by now, it’s never to underestimate Olivia Colman at an awards show. She was a surprise Oscar winner for “The Favourite,” and she was recently a surprise Emmy winner for “The Crown.” Well, she’s got another chance at Oscar for her role in Maggie Gyllenhaal‘s directorial debut, “The Lost Daughter,” and she’s been gradually climbing in our odds.

As of this writing Colman ranks seventh for Best Actress with 14/1 odds based on the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby users. So she’s not quite among the top five predicted nominees yet, but there’s still a very long runway between now and the Oscar nominations in January, and it has taken less than a month for Colman to ascend from hardly being in the conversation at all. The Netflix film doesn’t open until December, and...

‘The Power of the Dog’ is now the Oscar front-runner for Best Picture, according to our latest odds
Image
“The Power of the Dog” is the new Oscar front-runner for Best Picture, according to the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby users. It has taken the top spot from “Nightmare Alley,” Guillermo Del Toro‘s followup to his Best Picture-winning “The Shape of Water.”

The rise of “Power of the Dog” comes following its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on September 2. It also screened at the Telluride Film Festival and will continue its tour of the world at the Toronto and New York Film Festivals. Being selected by so many fests is a positive sign for it, and is also evidence of Netflix’s confidence in the film, which is directed by Jane Campion and tells the story of a cruel rancher (Benedict Cumberbatch) and the arrival of his new sister-in-law (Kirsten Dunst).

‘The Crown’: Gillian Anderson on track to win 2nd career Emmy after ‘The X-Files’
Image
In 1997, Gillian Anderson won her first career Emmy Award for playing FBI Agent Dana Scully on Fox’s sci-fi hit “The X-Files.” After nearly tripping on her way up to the stage (watch above), the actress praised Helen Mirren, who presented her with the statuette, and thanked her friends and family. Now, 24 years later, Anderson is on track to claim Emmy #2 thanks to her buzzed-about role as British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher on “The Crown.”

As of this writing, all 24 of our Emmy Experts from major media outlets predict Anderson will prevail in Best Drama Supporting Actress. That translates to overwhelming 4/1 odds to win. Her fellow nominees, in order of our Experts’ rankings, are Ann Dowd (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), Helena Bonham Carter (“The Crown”), Samira Wiley (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), Yvonne Strahovski (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), Aunjanue Ellis (“Lovecraft Country”), Emerald Fennell (“The Crown”) and Madeline Brewer (“The Handmaid’s Tale”).

Is this finally Kirsten Dunst’s year to be nominated for an Oscar? ‘The Power of the Dog’ has potential
Image
It feels like Kirsten Dunst has been on the cusp of an Oscar nomination since her career started, appearing in multiple films that have either received awards buzz or earned nominations from the motion picture academy. This year she has another project with the potential to get her to the main event: Jane Campion‘s as yet unseen “The Power of the Dog.” Some of the Expert journalists we’ve surveyed so far are predicting her to receive a nom. Don’t be surprised if Keanu Reeves gets a Golden Globe nom for ‘Bill and Ted Face the Music’ – it’s the Keanu-ssance
Image
To say the least, the “Bill and Ted” sci-fi comedies aren’t generally considered awards fare. They follow the title pair of stoned slackers (played by Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves) as they travel through time. And yet, in the back of my mind, I keep having the sneaking feeling that we’re underestimating the latest film in the franchise, “Bill and Ted Face the Music,” at the Golden Globes. In particular, I think Reeves could get a surprise nom for Best Film Comedy/Musical Actor.

SEEDaveed Diggs could become triple Golden Globe nominee for ‘The Good Lord Bird,’ ‘Hamilton’ and ‘Snowpiercer’

“Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure” started the franchise back in 1989. Its awards success was limited to a couple of nominations at the Saturn Awards. The sequel, “Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey,” followed in 1991 with a couple more Saturn noms, including a win for William Sadler‘s supporting performance as the Grim Reaper.

‘Soul’ could make Oscars history for Kemp Powers
Image
Pixar’s “Soul” continues to hold strong as a back-end Best Picture contender: with 22-to-1 odds of scoring a nomination, it sits in the 10th position on the Gold Derby Experts’ rankings for the Oscars’ top prize. Overall, 13 of 24 Experts have “Soul” making the Best Picture cut, including Erik Davis (Fandango), Anne Thompson (Indiewire), Eric Deggens (NPR), and Matthew Jacobs (HuffPost).

But while “Soul” could possibly become just the fourth animated feature ever nominated for Best Picture following “Beauty and the Beast” (1991), “Up” (2009), and “Toy Story 3” (2010), the film has the potential to make an even bigger historical mark on the 2021 Oscars ceremony. That’s because co-writer and co-director Kemp Powers is poised to receive an Original Screenplay nomination for “Soul” to match the likely citation he’ll earn for “One Night in Miami,” which Powers adapted from his own play.

‘Mank’ could be the 3rd black-and-white movie in 30 years to win cinematography Oscar, but another film is closing in on it
Image
“Mank” is the early Oscar front-runner to win Best Cinematography, according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, and it’s no wonder why. Black-and-white films stand out visually in an era when the vast majority of movies are shot in color. But monochromatic movies aren’t the slam dunk you might think. In fact, only two such movies have won that award in the past 30 years, which could be good news for “Mank’s” closest challenger in our odds, “Nomadland.”

Erik Messerschmidt is the cinematographer for “Mank,” which tells the true story of the title screenwriter who clashed with the wealthy Hollywood establishment and wrote the classic film “Citizen Kane.” The David Fincher-directed biopic is stylized to resemble the films of the 1940s era it depicts, which might especially appeal to the industry insiders who vote for the Oscars. And Messerschmidt just recently broke through with his...

Matt Berry (‘What We Do in the Shadows’) could get revenge at the Golden Globes after the Emmys snubbed the cast
Image
The FX comedy “What We Do in the Shadows” had a breakthrough at the 2020 Emmys after being mostly overlooked in 2019 for its first season. It earned eight nominations including Best Comedy Series. Unfortunately, no actors from the show were honored. But the good news is that the show might be able to carry that momentum into the Golden Globes, where we think lead actor Matt Berry has a strong shot at recognition.

Berry plays Laszlo Cravensworth, who is married to the woman who turned him into a vampire, Nadja (Natasia Demetriou). Based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby users as of this writing, Berry is the likeliest cast member to make the cut at the Globes. He’s right on the bubble for Best TV Comedy Actor, ranked sixth with 18/1 odds. Three of the Expert journalists we’ve surveyed expect him to be nominated: Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Matthew Jacobs...

Spike Lee (‘Da 5 Bloods’) could make Oscars history as the first Black director to be nominated twice
Image
Given his stature as a groundbreaker in Black cinema, it’s surprising that Spike Lee didn’t earn his first Oscar nomination for Best Director until “BlacKkKlansman” (2018) — three years after he accepted an Honorary Oscar from the academy. That made him only the sixth Black director in history to make the cut. But none have ever been nominated in the category twice, and Lee would do just that if he returns to the lineup with “Da 5 Bloods.”

John Singleton made history as the first Black nominee in this category, and he still holds the record as the youngest filmmaker ever nominated: he contended for “Boyz n the Hood” (1991) when he was only 24. It took almost two decades for another Black director to be nominated, Lee Daniels (2009’s “Precious”). But there were four more over the next 10 years: Steve McQueen (2013’s “12 Years a Slave”), Barry Jenkins (2016’s “Moonlight”), Jordan Peele...

Oscar Experts torn between Amanda Seyfried (‘Mank’) and Olivia Colman (‘The Father’) for Best Supporting Actress
Image
Best Supporting Actress looks pretty open at the 2021 Oscars, and it has undergone a major shift in recent weeks. A battle is underway between Amanda Seyfried (“Mank”) and Olivia Colman (“The Father”) in our Experts’ predictions as of this writing.

See‘Mank’ : Who are the true life people in David Fincher’s Netflix film about ‘Citizen Kane’?

A few weeks ago it looked like Glenn Close would finally win her first Oscar for her transformative role as a flinty grandma in “Hillbilly Elegy,” but mixed reviews for that film have called that into question (though several of our Experts are still backing her for the win). Since she isn’t as safe a bet as she was before, the door opened for other challengers.

Viola Davis overtakes Frances McDormand in Experts’ Oscar predictions, but watch out for Vanessa Kirby
Image
Viola Davis (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom“) has been ahead of Frances McDormand (“Nomadland“) in our overall Oscar odds for Best Actress for several weeks, but for most of that time the Expert journalists we surveyed were still giving the edge to McDormand. Not anymore. The Experts have joined the rest of our users in forecasting a Davis victory, but the margin is razor-thin, and there’s an ingenue they both need to keep an eye on: Vanessa Kirby in “Pieces of a Woman.”

As of December 4, there were 10 Experts who said Davis is out front: Thelma Adams (Gold Derby), Erik Davis (Fandango), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Tariq Khan (Fox TV), Susan King (Gold Derby), Wilson Morales (BlackFilmandTV), Michael Musto (Queerty), Claudia Puig (Kpcc), Anne Thompson (IndieWire) and Peter Travers (Rolling Stone).
