Lyrics that include the words “dick,” “fuck” and “pussy” are not the typical wholesome, family content the Academy’s Music Branch tends to recognize. But occasionally, they have allowed a couple to slip through. A24’s “Dicks: The Musical,” the opening night Midnight Madness at TIFF, has an onslaught of hilarious and catchy tunes that I wish the Oscars would be brave enough to nominate.

With so many hilarious tracks to choose from, including “Gay Old Life” and “The Sewer Song,” Grammy-winning rapper Megan Thee Stallion brings down the house with her delivery on the rap and dance number “Out-Alpha the Alpha.” It could and should be one of the many songs to consider for this year’s Academy Awards, and distributor A24 confirms they’ll submit the movie for Oscar consideration.

A grotesque and often grotesquely funny musical about twins trying to Parent Trap will prove an endurance test for many

You don’t have to be insane to inhabit the daft bizarro dimension in which the writer-stars Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson situate the Dada-on-Horny-Goat-Weed delirium of Dicks: The Musical, but it helps. That said, you do have to have an enduring love for – or at the very least, an appreciation for the distinct tonalities of – musical theater, the petri dish that incubated this special little mutant abomination. What began as an Off-Broadway sensation titled Fucking Identical Twins enters cinemas clawing and snarling, odds-on the American entertainment industry’s most insistently and consistently strange, grotesque creation this year. And if not that, it’s a safe bet that it’s still the only one with a disembodied, talking, flying pudenda.

“As far as I was concerned, it was like, ‘I’m just doing this dumb show with my friends,’” remembers composer Karl Saintt Lucy of Fucking Identical Twins, the one-act off-Broadway musical that ran in 2015. Over a half decade later that, that “dumb show” is now one of the more anticipated openings at TIFF. Retitled Dicks: The Musical, the A24 movie is an R-rated dirtbag version of The Parent Trap where two megalomaniacs (Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson) discover they are twins and try to get their parents — played by Nathan Lane and Megan Mullally — back together.

Graduating from NYU’s Tisch Schools of Theater with a Mfa in Musical Theatre Writing, St Lucy, who uses they/them pronouns, first met Sharp and Jackson, the stars and co-writers of Dicks, at Story Pirates, a theater program of largely aspiring comedians that travel around to elementary schools putting on improv shows.

Exclusive: A24’s Sofia Coppola directed movie, Priscilla, will now go wide on Nov. 3 instead of Oct. 27.

The news comes on the heels of a glowing world premiere out of the Venice Film Festival where the movie based on the Priscilla Presley’s memoir Elvis and Me grabbed a 94% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes.

With Dune: Part Two moving off of Nov. 3, it creates more breathing room for others movies and availability of theaters. And, true, it’s also the last weekend ‘official’ weekend of the Taylor Swift: Eras Concert movie.

Talent and creators of the film including Coppola, Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi are now cleared to promote the film since it was granted a SAG-AFTRA Interim Agreement ahead of its world premiere.

It is no secret that film festivals have had to rely on directors to provide the star power fueling their big premieres during the strikes, but opening night of the Toronto International Film Festival mostly failed to deliver even that.

The first audience for Hayao Miyazaki’s “The Boy and the Heron,” the festival’s official opening title, only got an introduction from Studio Ghibli VP Junichi Nishioka. Meanwhile the audience at the later screening got an extra speech from surprise guest Guillermo del Toro.

A24’s Dicks — The Musical got the 2023 Toronto Film Festival’s Midnight Madness section off to a raucous, rollicking start as the world premiere of Larry Charles’ campy comedy brought the house down.

The TIFF Midnight Madness crowd came ready to party and the mood was set early, with a swinging, softshoe number by Midnight Madness programmer Peter Kuplowsky, who danced on stage belting out a musical tribute to the festival’s beloved cult-film sidebar. “I’ll be your host for the next 10 midnights, this is only the beginning!” said Kuplowsky. “We have so many outrageous movies for you!”

A raucous, deliriously madcap midnight premiere of “Dicks: The Musical” closed out the first day of the Toronto Film Festival. A24’s first-ever song-and-dance movie, which leans hard into its R-rating and puts an irreverent, queer spin on “The Parent Trap,” played to laughs, cheers, audible gasps and shrieks and, yes, a few groans from the Royal Alexandra Theatre. In the midseason finale, Aaron, played by Trevor Jackson, suffers a major injury. But his girlfriend, Edie (Kelly Rowland), seems more concerned about missing her class. Through Grown-ish, fans have witnessed the Johnson kids' journey from immature children to independent adults, with each of them facing setbacks but ultimately finding their paths.

You've never seen a musical like this before. On Aug. 3, A24 released the Nsfw trailer for "D*cks: The Musical," formerly titled "F*cking Identical Twins," and the R-rated musical is a strange, thrilling bonanza. A24 also announced that the movie will make its world premiere at Midnight Madness at the Toronto International Film Festival next month.

The movie stars Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp. Joining them is Megan Thee Stallion in her big-screen debut, playing Jackson and Sharp's boss. Rounding out the cast are "Saturday Night Live" and "Wicked" star Bowen Yang, Nathan Lane, and Megan Mullally. You've seen A24 films about somewhat literal man-eating aliens ("Under the Skin"), people being turned into walruses ("Tusk"), farting corpses ("Swiss Army Man"), talking shells ("Marcel the Shell with Shoes On"), and the multiverse ("Everything Everywhere All at Once"). Now, the studio is trying its hand at a musical for the first time with "Dicks: The Musical," a film that, contrary to my expectations the first time I saw that title, is not about singing penises. I mean, A24 only just made a film featuring a giant penis monster, so it wasn't out of the question.

Backing up -- "Dicks: The Musical" comes from relative newcomers Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp, who both wrote the film -- which is based on their original two-person stage musical "F***ing Identical Twins" -- and star as a pair of obnoxious business bros who find out they're literal twins and conspire to get their divorced parents back together.

The Toronto Film Festival pulled the curtain off its lineup for this year’s Discovery and Midnight Madness sections with notable titles respectively teeing off both programs’ opening nights: Patricia Arquette’s Gonzo Girl and Borat director Larry Charles’ Dicks: The Musical from A24.

The Midnight Madness section counts 10 features, seven of which are world premieres. The Discovery lineup, which primarily boasts world and international premieres, includes 26 titles. Notably, 13 female filmmakers representing 50% of the total program are featured in this year’s Discovery; that lineup is known for being a window to contemporary world cinema with first and second movies from frosh filmmakers. With Midnight Madness films, it’s anything goes.

The Toronto Film Festival’s Midnight Madness sidebar will open with Borat director Larry Charles’ latest movie Dicks: The Musical getting a world premiere.

Charles’ latest film, from A24 and in theaters from Sept. 29, stars Megan Mullally, Megan Thee Stallion, Bowen Yang as God and Nathan Lane, as the comedy duo of Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp (who also wrote the film’s script) play self-obsessed businessmen who discover they’re long-lost identical twins and come together to plot the reunion of their eccentric and divorced parents.

“This year’s madness infectiously ignites with 11 o’clock numbers that go all the way to midnight courtesy of Larry Charles’ bonkers and bawdy Dicks: The Musical. A menagerie of tastes will be sated, so bottoms up!” Peter Kuplowsky, TIFF International programmer of Midnight Madness, said in a statement on Thursday.

A24, the indie studio behind acclaimed films like Moonlight, Lady Bird, and Uncut Gems, is venturing into new territory with its first ever musical comedy. The film, which was originally titled F*cking Identical Twins, has been re-titled Dicks: The Musical. Here’s everything you need to know about this outrageous and hilarious project.

The Plot

Dicks: The Musical is based on a two-man stage show written and performed by comedians Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp at the Upright Citizens Brigade in 2014. The show is a parody of The Parent Trap, the classic story of identical twin sisters who switch places to reunite their divorced parents. However, in Dicks: The Musical, the twins are adult brothers who work as business rivals. They discover their true identity and decide to swap lives in order to get their parents back together.

Grown-ish is closing in on an end date at Freeform.

The basic cabler announced Wednesday that the previously announced sixth season will be the last for the Kenya Barris-created comedy.

The first half of Grown-ish Season 6 will premiere this summer, while the second half will be held for 2024.

"We've spent nearly a decade telling our stories through the -ish series, and to say it has been an amazing journey would be an understatement," Barris said in a statement announcing the news.

"To be able to watch Yara, Marcus and our entire Grown-ish family grow up in front of (and in many ways alongside) us over these past several years has been both a joy and an honor."

"From the stories we've told to the talent we've fostered and, most importantly, the memories made, I could not be more proud of everything we've accomplished and the -ish family I've been a part of.

Freeform’s grown-ish is officially ending after six seasons, marking the end of the ish-verse, which kicked off with ABC’s black-ish back in 2014.

The college comedy’s final season, which includes the series’ milestone 100th episode, will be split into two parts, with 6A airing this summer and 6B being held until 2024.

Exclusive: Trevor Jackson, known for his role as Aaron Jackson, the male lead opposite Yara Shahidi on Freefom’s Grown-ish, has signed with APA for representation.

Jackson’s Aaron Jackson character was introduced as a recurring guest star in mothership ABC series Black-ish. He has been with the spinoff Grown-ish since its launch. The series is now airing its fifth season and has been renewed for Season 6.

The rising actor previously starred as the lead in Sony Pictures’ remake of 1972 blaxploitation cult classic, Superfly alongside the late Michael K. Williams.

Jackson is also an accomplished musical artist and is set for a 26-state tour with fellow APA client Eric Bellinger on his headlining “Obsession Tour“ which kicks off February 2 in Seattle and wraps up in Las Vegas April 1st. Jackson will be supporting his latest EP, “Show Me Diamonds.”

Exclusive: Comedy producer Daniel Cramer of The Cramer Comedy Newsletter is launching the Brooklyn Comedy Collective (Bcc) Pitchfest, a two-day comedy festival for rising talent. Bcc Pitchfest will take place on December 3 and 4 from 5-10 p.m. Et at the Bcc Theater in Brooklyn.

Attendees will have the opportunity to participate via zoom or in person.

The festival will feature staged readings of TV pilots written by members of the Bcc community many of whom have been featured in Cramer’s newsletter including Jo Firestone, head writer on the Paramount+ series Ziwe, Aaron Jackson, and J.D. Amato from Apple’s The Problem with Jon Stewart.

As part of the selection process, 100 people were invited to submit their best pilots or one person show and 11 finalists will perform at the festival.

I Love That For You breakout star Matt Rogers is set for his first comedy special at Showtime with Have You Heard of Christmas?, a variety show based on his live show of the same name. Featuring a mix of standup and original holiday pop music, the multi-hyphenate will look to make his case to become the next "Pop Prince of Christmas." He's also brought a few friends along in the form of Bowen Yang (Saturday Night Live) and comedy duo Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson (F---ing Identical Twins). It's set to premiere on the network on December 2.

Matt Rogers’ debut comedy special “Have You Heard of Christmas?” will premiere on Showtime on Dec. 2.

Based on his live show of the same name, the special features an original set of holiday pop music and stand-up comedy as Rogers seeks to win approval as the next “Pop Prince of Christmas.” The special was taped with a live audience at Joe’s Pub within the Public Theater in New York, and will feature performances and short comedic bits from guest stars Bowen Yang (“Saturday Night Live”) and comedy duo Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson (“Fucking Identical Twins”).

Rogers is known for co-hosting the podcast “Las Culturistas” with Yang, and recently starred in “I Love That For You” on Showtime and the Searchlight and Hulu film “Fire Island.” He has also written for HBO Max’s “The Other Two” and Netflix’s “Q-Force” along with co-creating the Quibi series “Gayme Show.

A24 gave their satirical slasher Bodies Bodies Bodies (you can read our 8/10 review at This Link) a wide theatrical release back in August, and now it has been announced that Bodies Bodies Bodies is heading to Blu-ray and DVD on October 18th – so it’s coming home just in time for Halloween. This past weekend brought two brand new horror movies up onto the big screen, with Lionsgate’s Fall and A24’s Bodies Bodies Bodies opening in relatively wide release.

First up, Lionsgate’s vertigo-inducing Fall landed in the #10 spot on the domestic box office charts, the film opening in 1,548 theaters and scaring up 2.5 million over the weekend.

First up, A24 and director Alex Garland‘s new horror movie Men is now available on Blu-ray and Digital as of today, August 9th, the film released in theaters back in May of this year.

A24 has greenlit “F*cking Identical Twins,” an R-rated musical comedy that puts a subversive spin on “The Parent Trap.”

Comedians Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp are adapting the film from their two-man stage show, which premiered at Manhattan’s Upright Citizens Brigade in 2014. In addition to writing the script, Jackson and Sharp will co-star as the eponymous identical twins. They will be joined by a star-studded ensemble includes Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally, Bowen Yang and Megan Thee Stallion. It is not clear who those actors will play.
