Trained at the Royal Academy of Music and served his apprenticeship in the bands of Bert Ambrose, Jack Hylton, Bert Ralston and Jack Payne.

Dance Band Leader and Trumpeter in the 1930s and 40s, and then Disc Jockey on Radio Luxembourg and BBC Radio from 1948-1977. Many of his programmes were recorded at his home-based studio.

Some sources claim he was born in Horsley, Derbyshire, England, UK.
