'Outlaw King' Is Chris Pine's Forgotten Sequel to 'Braveheart'
Image
Mel Gibson thrived as a popular actor for 15 years before Braveheart, but it was that film (his second as a director) which brought him awards attention for the first time (at least outside Australia). The movie was nominated for 10 Oscars and remains the only film for which Gibson won an Academy Award. Three decades later, some people look back on that Best Picture winner as a melodramatic, inaccurate slog, while it remains a classic epic to others. Depending on where you stand about Braveheart, you might be delighted to know that there's an unofficial sequel starring Chris Pine, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Florence Pugh — Outlaw King.

The Netflix film picks up almost directly after Braveheart ends. It comes at a precarious moment when England was trying to repair English-Scottish relations by marrying the king's goddaughter (Pugh) to Bruce (Pine). But when news of the execution of William Wallace (Gibson's character) reaches Scotland,...

James Marsters' Backstory for Spike Reveals Why He's Buffy's Most Complex Antihero
Image
Spike cemented himself as Buffy the Vampire Slayer's most complex antihero thanks to James Marsters' portrayl of the character over six seasons – and in 2014, The actor behind everyone's favorite Blondie Bear penned a graphic novel starring the character, taking place during the start of Buffy's seventh season, the time period in which Spike gained a soul.

Spike explores what having a soul means for himself in Spike: Into the Light – written by James Marsters, penciled by Derlis Santacruz, inked by Andy Owens, colored by Dan Jackson, and lettered by Richard Starkings and Comicraft's Jimmy Betancourt – with the former William the Bloody unexpectedly finding himself opening up to a new love interest named Dylan.

Spike Reveals Why He "Was a Very Bad Man"

Spike first meets Dylan early in the story, after saving her from an alleyway mugging. As they bond, he walks her home but declines her invitation to come inside.

Spike's Best Endgame Romance Was [Spoiler], Not Buffy
Image
Spike's secret endgame romance with Dylan was cut short before it had a chance to fully develop, making it a missed opportunity for him. Unlike his relationships with Buffy and Drusilla, Spike's romance with Dylan allowed him to showcase a more vulnerable and sensitive side of himself. While Spike did allow himself to be vulnerable with Buffy, he was at his most vulnerable with Dylan, who could have been a perfect match for him if she had accepted his vampire nature.

Spike had a secret endgame romance outside his love for Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Audiences have argued for years whether Buffy's best romance was with Angel or Spike. But Spike's best romance may not have had the proper time to flourish before it crumbled before his very eyes.

The romance in question is unveiled in Spike: Into the Light by James Marsters, Derlis Santacruz, Andy Owens, and Dan Jackson.

Windows 11 PC Health Check Has the Internet Facing Rejection
Check (2021)
After weeks of speculation, Microsoft has finally unveiled Windows 11, the new operating system upgrade coming this holiday. Boasting many tweaks to the Ui, as well as few other new features, Windows 11 should bring some welcome changes to the Windows PC experience.

At the forefront of the upgrade is the new Start Menu, which is now sitting at the center of the taskbar. The new Start Menu forgoes the tiles that have been a signature of the Windows experience for the past few generations of the Os. Windows 11 will instead feature a Start Menu that works like a more traditional launcher where you can quickly access your go-to apps, recent files, and the revamped Windows Store, which is now compatible with Android apps.

It’s clear that Microsoft’s major focus when designing Windows 11 was making the most efficient Os possible, as showcased by the new widget panel that slides out...

Indiana Jones Meets Han Solo In Surprisingly Tragic Crossover
Harrison Ford has played two of cinema’s most iconic characters in his career, and funnily enough, they’re both created by George Lucas. There’s a lot of crossover between both space-faring smuggler Han Solo and adventuring archaeologist Indiana Jones, then, but the franchises have always kept resolutely separate. That is, apart from one Star Wars comic which granted fans’ wishes by having Indy encounter Han. But it’s kind of a case of be careful what you wish for, as it was surprisingly tragic.

Star Wars 19, published by Dark Horse in 2004, is a non-canon anthology comic that includes “Into the Great Unknown,” a story from W. Haden Blackman, Steve Dutrol, Sean Murphy and Dan Jackson. It sees Han and Chewie crash the Millennium Falcon into an early Earth, where Han is killed by Native Americans. Many decades later, a certain archaeologist investigates the myth of the Sasquatch and discovers it’s really Chewbacca,...

Tom Cruise Plotting Space-Set Action Blockbuster with Elon Musk and Nasa
Alfonso Cuarón at an event for Rudo et Cursi (2008)
During the press tour for Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity, a journalist asked the director what it was like to film in space, prompting a humorous reply. In the years since that groundbreaking blockbuster, Christopher Nolan, Ridley Scott, Damien Chazelle, James Gray, and more didn’t venture into the vast unknown for their respective space-set dramas, but it’s looking like the only man fit for the job is exploring the possibility.

While it’s been joked about for years that the only way that Ethan Hunt can one-up himself is to head to space, Deadline reports that Tom Cruise is, in fact, looking to shoot the first narrative feature film set far above Earth’s atmosphere. While it won’t be a Mission: Impossible film, the 57-year-old actor is talking with Elon Musk’s Space X team and Nasa about what it would take to film a project in outer-space.

Joss Whedon Returns To Buffy The Vampire Slayer For Season 12 Comic
Buffy the Vampire Slayer is coming back for the twelfth season in its comic book form and fans will be happy to hear that creator Joss Whedon will be returning as well.

Dark Horse's Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 12: The Reckoning will be the latest installment of the Buffyverse comic series and Whedon will co-write it with longtime Buffy writer Christos Gage. As much as I would have loved to see the TV series keep going, I have enjoyed the comic books that followed and I couldn't be happier that Whedon will be back to move the story forward. This will be the first time Whedon has worked on Buffy since Season 9 in 2011. Artist Georges Jeanty is also set to return to illustrate the upcoming adventures.

Thanks to Cbr we have the art above and the following story details which reveal the return of Angel and Faith:

"...Joss Whedon's 'Buffy and the Scoobies' are shocked to discover another new kind of vampire: harder to kill, able to transform, and walk in the light of day--like 'Dracula'.

"If that weren't enough, the rules of magic are literally being rewritten in the 'Vampyr' book, making it a highly coveted item.

"As the crew feels the responsibility of protecting the book and writing the new rules, they are tempted by what new rules can do for them...

Happy Birthday Ray Harryhausen – Here are His Ten Best Films
Article by Jim Batts, Dana Jung, Sam Moffitt, and Tom Stockman

Special effects legend Ray Harryhausen, whose dazzling and innovative visual effects work on fantasy adventure films such as Jason And The Argonauts and The 7th Voyage Of Sinbad passed away in 2013 at age 92. In 1933, the then-13-year-old Ray Harryhausen saw King Kong at a Hollywood theater and was inspired – not only by Kong, who was clearly not just a man in a gorilla suit, but also by the dinosaurs. He came out of the theatre “stunned and haunted. They looked absolutely lifelike … I wanted to know how it was done.” It was done by using stop-motion animation: jointed models filmed one frame at a time to simulate movement. Harryhausen was to become the prime exponent of the technique and its combination with live action. The influence of Harryhausen on film luminaries like Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Peter Jackson, and...

Mysterious Island | Blu-ray Review
Fans of special effects icon Ray Harryhausen should rejoice at the remastering of 1961’s Mysterious Island, a sequel of sorts to Jules Verne’s more celebrated 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, which had been memorably adapted by Richard Fleischer in 1954. Director Cy Endfield takes the reigns on this big budget spectacle which tends to suffer from a bout of sequel-itis as regards the bombastic fervor of gigantic, menacing creatures taking precedence over characterization or narrative energy. Still, the production quality does display the same sense of movie magic specific to a certain period of cinema where Harryhausen’s signature Dynamation would influence generations of future filmmakers.

During the 1865 siege of Richmond, Virginia, a handful of soldiers, both Union and Confederate, escape the stockade via a hot air balloon, ending up somewhere on a strange island in the Pacific Ocean. Captain Cyrus Harding (Michael Craig) more or less resumes control of the men,...

Blu-ray Review: "Mysterious Island" (1961) Twilight Time Limited Edition
By Lee Pfeiffer

Twilight Time has released the 1961 film adaptation of Jules Verne's classic adventure Mysterious Island as a limited edition (3,000 units) Blu-ray. The story was Verne's sequel to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, although the only recurring character is the reclusive genius Captain Nemo (played in this version with great dignity and charisma by Herbert Lom). Nemo doesn't appear until late in the movie and to say too much about how he fits in with the story would spoil the film's many delights. The movie starts with a daring escape by Union POWs from a Confederate prison during the final days of the Civil War. The escapees utilize a hot air balloon, that they successfully launch under gun fire in the midst of a hurricane. The newly-freed men are Capt. Harding (Michael Craig), fellow soldiers Herbert Brown (Michael Callan) and Neb Nugent (Dan Jackson), as well as a war correspondent,...
