Major Scrubs Star Officially Set to Return for ABC's Reboot Series
Image
A new Scrubs universe series is currently in the works at ABC, as has been previously reported. The latest update on the project should be very exciting for fans of the original, as one of the main stars of the original Scrubs is set to make his return.

Per THR, it's been announced that Zach Braff is officially returning in ABC's upcoming Scrubs reboot. Braff will reprise his role as Dr. John Dorian, aka. J.D., one of the main characters from the Og series. The update follows the reports that Scrubs was getting an update back in December, though series creator Bill Lawrence and some of the show's cast members have long been teasing their desire to revisit the show. As of now, ABC and 20th Television have not offered an official comment on the casting.

One hurdle that stood in the way of the new series moving forward was Lawrence's busy schedule.

Inside the Push to Bring a ‘Wire’ Reunion to HBO
Image
TV is firmly in its reboot, revival, and reunion era. Shows such as Frasier and Sex and the City have been revisited, with varying degrees of success. Some of these exploits, like the newsmaking Fresh Prince reunion, have added valuable perspective to the original show.

But with all the nostalgia floating around Hollywood, it’s surprising that HBO’s The Wire, a prescient, innovative chronicle of urban blight in America, told through intersecting characters in Baltimore, hasn’t had a large-scale reunion. In the 23 years since the show’s debut,...

What The Most Negative Critic Reviews Said About J. D. Vance's Hillbilly Elegy Movie
Image
J.D. Vance's story is very inspiring. As his 2016 memoir, "Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and a Culture in Crisis," related, he was raised in abject poverty in the suburbs of Ohio by his Kentucky-born grandparents, and his mother wrestled with addiction all her life. He managed to rise out of poverty, serve a stint in the military, and was eventually accepted into Ohio State University. He eventually achieved a degree from Yale and now, at age 39, Vance has realized his ultimate goal: to be a whiny, sycophantic bootlicker for a clownish would-be fascist. In 2024, Vance will serve as the running mate of Donald Trump, and the pair hope to enact Project 2025, a piddling wish-list of evil, theocratic dictates that aims to rob women, the poor, and queer people of rights and turn the president into an Emperor. We've come a long way, baby.

Conservative critics praised "Hillbilly Elegy...

Image
Michael B. Jordan credits his role in The Wire for launching his career, allowing him to learn from talented veterans and showcase his talent at a young age. The Wire is widely regarded as one of the greatest shows in television history, which caught the attention of industry professionals. Jordan's role as Wallace in The Wire led to other opportunities in future productions, as people were fans of the show and his character, opening doors for his career.

Michael B. Jordan reflects on his career-making role in The Wire over two decades after the show premiered. Created by David Simon, the highly acclaimed HBO drama began as a show about the Baltimore drug trade, told through the eyes of the dealers and law enforcement, and with each subsequent season, expanded to explore a different facet of the city, including the port system, politics, education, and the media. How The Scrubs Musical Made Grey’s Anatomy’s Musical Episode Happen
Image
Both medical TV shows Scrubs and Grey’s Anatomy had musical episodes, here’s how the Scrubs musical influenced Grey’s Anatomy’s. While both recounted the hospital workers' stories and daily lives, Scrubs and Grey’s Anatomy belong to very different genres, and despite that, both managed to include successful musical episodes. However, the earlier medical sitcom actually inspired, in a way, and made possible the later Grey’s Anatomy musical, which centered on Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) and happened in season 7, episode 18, “Song Beneath the Song.”

While creator Shonda Rhimes revealed that the idea to do a musical episode had always been around since Grey’s Anatomy’s pilot, the behind-the-scenes of Grey’s Anatomy season 7, episode 18 disclosed that the network’s executives opposed the idea, which was why the Grey’s Anatomy musical episode took forever to happen. After the cast’s song renditions managed to convince them, feature song producer Chris Horvath was chosen as music director.

The Plot Of The Wire Season 2 Was A Point Of Contention For Michael Kenneth Williams
Sur écoute (2002)
Although "The Wire" is widely considered one of the best TV shows of all time, fans are often less enthusiastic about season 2. While the show's debut season focused on the drug trade in Baltimore's west side, season 2 radically switched the focus towards the docks. Most of the plot was now focused on crooked union leader Frank Sobatka (Chris Bauer), his son Nick Sobatka (Pablo Schreiber), and Nick's annoying cousin Ziggy (James Ransone). A lot of the most memorable characters from season 1, like Bodie (J.D. Williams), Stringer Bell (Idris Elba) and Omar (Michael K. Williams), were given...

Peacock Shares First Look at Craig Robinson Comedy Series ‘Killing It;’ Hulu Announces ‘Life and Beth’ Premiere Date (TV News Roundup)
Image
Peacock has shared the first look at its new upcoming comedy series “Killing It,” streaming this April.

Created by “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” producers Dan Goor and Luke Del Tredici, “Killing It” stars Craig Robinson as Craig, a man who competes in a state-sponsored python hunt in his quest to achieve the American Dream. The series co-stars Stephanie Nogueras as Craig’s ex-wife Camille, Jet Miller as his pre-teen daughter Vanessa and Rell Battle as his younger brother Isaiah. Claudia O’Doherty, Scott Macarthur and Wyatt Walter round out the cast.

“We love all the ambitious, challenging, thematically-rich series that populate the current peak-tv landscape,” said Goor in a statement. “We also love jokes. So, we tried to make a show that could deliver both. We wanted ‘Killing It’ to explore America’s quasi-religious obsession with entrepreneurship and wealth, and we also wanted it to be funny. Really, really funny. Plus, we wanted it to have big snakes.

Watch: Miles Warren's 'Bruiser' Short Film About Manhood & Violence
Bruiser (2000)
"Calm down, bro." This is the kind of excellent short film that launches the career of a talented filmmaker. Bruiser is an award-winning short film made by filmmaker Miles Warren, and it premiered at both the SXSW + Sundance Festivals earlier this year. After his father gets into a fight at a bowling alley, Darious begins to investigate the limitations of his own manhood. The film is an exploration into toxic masculinity, violence, and bullying, and how this is passed from generation to generation. Starring Noble B. Whitted and J.D. Williams. This is not just another film about manhood, there's layers and depth to every single shot in this. Miles Warren "had a very clear vision... We referenced films like The Favourite, Dayveon, The Snowtown Murders, Chungking Express and Paris, Texas." A must watch short film - and it's only 10 mins. Thanks to Short of the Week for the tip on this one.

Oz: revisiting HBO's influential prison drama
Jamie Andrew Nov 7, 2016

We revisit HBO's sterling and seminal prison drama Oz on the run-up to its 20th anniversary...

Oz is sometimes criminally overlooked in the pantheon of TV dramas, which is a great sin indeed; not only because the show is the obvious grand-or-God parent to a multitude of modern classics (without Oz, it's doubtful whether The Sopranos would've existed), but also because it's an immaculately acted, endlessly compelling, emotionally resonant powerhouse of a show that demands – and deserves – recognition and respect.

See related Netflix's Stranger Things: Shawn Levy interview Netflix's Stranger Things: spotting the movie references

These days we're inured to the darkness that pervades our favourite, highest-rated shows; desensitised to the violence that sweeps down from Westeros to Baltimore, via Fargo and Albuquerque. Anti-heroes have almost become de rigueur, to the point where a return to the chiselled-chinned, morally-flawless supermen of network TV's heyday is...

'The Night Of': 5 Things We Learned
The Night Of (2016)
Welcome to The Night Of's day after, when viewers are undoubtedly experiencing the slightly woozy, vaguely hungover sensation that accompanies eight weeks of investment in a TV show and the promise of a potentially earth-shaking pay-off that, in the end, can be filed under mileage-may-vary. To be fair, it was apparent very early on that this HBO miniseries wasn't likely to dominate the modern equivalent of water-cooler discussions in a way that, say, the true-crime phenomenon Making a Murderer did last winter, or the spot-the-Reagan-era-reference game that was Stranger Things...

Bill Camp at an event for Wildlife: Une saison ardente (2018)
Review: 'The Night Of' gets off to a breathless start with 'The Beach'
Bill Camp at an event for Wildlife: Une saison ardente (2018)
Earlier this week, I published my rave review of HBO's new miniseries The Night Of, and I'm going to put it into the weekly review rotation for its run, starting with thoughts on the first episode, coming up just as soon as I can name two Yankees headed for the Hall of Fame... "Am I really here?" -Naz Because "The Beach" has been available for a few weeks through HBO's On Demand and streaming services, I've gotten to see the early reactions to it, which tend to break down along three paths: 1)That was unbearable to watch because I felt so bad for Naz as his night out went so horribly awry; 2)That was unbearable to watch because Naz acted like such a complete idiot at every turn; 3)Even though I felt bad for Naz, and/or couldn't believe how stupid he kept being, I was riveted by the whole thing.

The Night Of (2016)
Review: 'The Night Of' is the great drama HBO very badly needs right now
The Night Of (2016)
There's his name about a minute into the opening credits of The Night Of: James Gandolfini. That Gandolfini, who died three years ago, is still listed as an executive producer on the new HBO miniseries speaks to the deal he signed way back when he was going to co-star in the project (in a role now played by John Turturro), and to his role as one of the people championing it through development. It also evokes images of a time when HBO owned the Prestige TV game outright, benevolently renting space out to would-be challengers because its position was so strong. That was a long time ago, before the rise of Netflix and all the other Peak TV players, and before HBO skidded into its current rough patch. Executives keep leaving abruptly. Recent dramas have either failed outright (the expensive, star-laden Vinyl got unrenewed last month), imploded quickly (True...

Barbershop: The Next Cut – Review
This film franchise zeros in on something that many small towns and big cities (really the neighborhoods in said cities) share: mainly a place where everyone seems to gather. Some place aside from the obvious schools, city halls, and churches (or synagogues). It’s actually a business. There’s a popular corner diner, maybe a bar or pub, perhaps a locally owned clothing store. Well, for this neighborhood in the south side of Chicago it’s the hair salon known to moviegoers thanks to 2002’s Barbershop. That modest little “slice of life” flick was popular that it inspired a sequel two years later (Barbershop 2: Back In Business). The following year saw a spin-off (Beauty Shop) and a TV series on premium cable channel Showtime. The scissors and shavers have been silenced for almost a dozen years, but now movie goers have another appointment with Calvin and his crew for Barbershop: The Next Cut.

'The Sopranos' Rewind: Season 1, Episode 2: '46 Long'
Lorraine Bracco, James Gandolfini, Edie Falco, Steven Van Zandt, Dominic Chianese, Robert Iler, Michael Imperioli, Steve Schirripa, Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Tony Sirico, and Aida Turturro in Les Soprano (1999)
Welcome to the second installment of our summer trip through "The Sopranos" season 1. When I revisited early seasons of "The Wire," as well as the whole run of "Deadwood," I did separate versions of each review for newcomers and veterans, but over time realized that the newcomers weren't commenting much, if at all, and that it therefore made sense to simply do one review. Any significant spoilers for episodes beyond the one being reviewed will be contained in a separate section at the end of the review; so long as you avoid that, and the comments, you should be fine. Thoughts on the second episode, "46 Long," coming up just as soon as I finish unscrewing my belly button... "But she's my mother. You're supposed to take care of your mother." -Tony Second episodes are hard. Almost every TV writer will tell you that. With your pilot, you get to set up the premise,...

J.D. Williams, Barry Sloane, and Malik Yoba have all signed up to star in writer/director Tony Ducret's indie feature film, "Fantastic Damage," which Yoba will also co-produce. The film will shoot for 21 days in July in New York City locations. Described by the filmmaker as a hard-boiled ensemble thriller, and an expansion of Ducret's award-winning pulp thriller short "I Can Smoke?" which was profiled on this blog in 2013, "Fantastic Damage" follows a dysfunctional Upper West Side Manhattan family, the Schwartzs, in interweaving romantic tales of vengeance. Synopsis reads: When Ethan Schwartz’s wife, Anna, claims to leave town for a...

10 great reveals and moments at 'The Wire' PaleyFest reunion panel
Andre Royo
The cast of The Wire had a whole lot of fun during Thursday's reunion panel at New York's Paley Center for Media. Show co-creator David Simon, executive producer Nina Noble, cast members Michael Kenneth Williams, Wendell Pierce, Sonja Sohn, Seth Gilliam, Jim True-Frost, John Doman, Lawrence Gilliard Jr, and Jamie Hector took the stage, while surprise guests and cast members Tristan Wilds, J.D. Williams, Bob Wisdom, and Michelle Paress took seats in the audience. The show's Brits, Dominic West and Idris Elba, were both unable to make the panel, but popped their heads in (quite literally) with video messages. HitFix...

Sur écoute (2002)
12 revelations from 'The Wire' reunion at PaleyFest
Sur écoute (2002)
New York – The theater at the Paley Center was full tonight, and with good reason – the cast of "The Wire," along producers David Simon and Nina Noble, were present for a discussion and Q&A. HitFix's own Alan Sepinwall acted as moderator and the evening proved incredibly interesting. Anyone who has watched it, knows that "The Wire," which aired for five seasons on HBO, was a special show, and one that has only grown in stature and myth since it went off the air. Sepinwall probably described it best in his book, "The Revolution was Televised." He wrote that people will approach him and say, "I am ready to watch 'The Wire.' And they phrase it like that—like it's a religious obligation they are about to undertake, rather than viewing a modestly rated HBO drama." One look at tonight's audience, even as viewed via the livestream, illustrated just...

Robert Clohessy, Michael Warren, and Bruce Weitz in Capitaine Furillo (1981)
Review: 'Hill Street Blues: The Complete Series' on DVD
Robert Clohessy, Michael Warren, and Bruce Weitz in Capitaine Furillo (1981)
Late in the DVD commentary for the pilot episode of "Hill Street Blues," actor Joe Spano marvels at the show's impact on the medium. "It's extraordinary," he says, "the repercussions of this 48 minutes of television." The cop drama's co-creator Steven Bochco follows by suggesting, "It's sort of a family tree, and if you look at the branches of the tree, you'll see 25 years of television." Bochco is, if anything, underselling the importance of "Hill Street," which is on the short list of the most influential TV shows ever made. Whether through shared actors, writers, directors or through stylistic and thematic complexity, its DNA can be found in nearly every great drama produced in the 30-plus years since it debuted. The show was only occasionally interested in the legal trials of the criminals in its unnamed fictional city, but the complete series DVD set (it arrives in stores on Tuesday, for...

'The Following' Recap: Joe Kills Again, Ryan Hardy Meets The Killer Twins
Joe Carroll kills again and Ryan Hardy is drawn deeper into the New York City murders in The Following's “For Joe.”

This week the audience learned more about what Joe Carroll (James Purefoy), or ‘Darryl,’ has been up to for the past year. After narrowly escaping the fire at the lighthouse, Carroll ran away to Arkansas and found solace in the arms of a prostitute named Judy (Carrie Preston). Judy lives alone on a small property in the middle of nowhere with her teenage daughter, Mandy (Tiffany Boone). Mandy reads the details of the subway murders to Joe behind her mothers back before leaving for school. When Joe goes into the house for breakfast, Judy asks him if he’s tempted to go back to killing people, so, it’s safe to say she knows all about Joe’s past as a serial killer.
