‘Idiotka’ Review: Anna Baryshnikov Shines in a Lead Role and Sews Chaos in Spirited Fashionista Comedy
Image
Writer-director Nastasya Popov finely threads a needle in her debut feature “Idiotka,” dipping into the chaotic life of Margarita (Anna Baryshnikov), an aspiring fashion designer with a barely functioning sewing machine in the tight-knit Russian district of West Hollywood. Margarita seems as much a work in progress as the eternally under-construction house she lives in. She’s been making ends meet by attaching tags taken off well-known designer labels onto her own work, then pawning them off online. But the clothes themselves show plenty of personality under the false advertising; accordingly, Popov delivers a boisterous tale of a woman coming into her own, told with real humor and heart.

Like one of Margarita’s dresses, there is at least some repurposed fabric in “Idiotka.” Margarita struggles both with asserting herself in a brutal industry and with stepping out of the shadow of her feisty family, but the comedy is all...

‘Idiotka’ Review: Anna Baryshnikov Competes For The American Dream On A Reality Show In Nastasya Popov’s Directorial Debut — SXSW
Image
Writer-director Nastasya Popov’s feature debut is a hilariously heartfelt reminder that immigrants make America (and cinema) great.

In the earnest comedy-drama Idiotka, Anna Baryshnikov plays Margarita Levlansky, a budding fashion designer living with her grandmother, father and brother in a tiny apartment in West Hollywood, “not the fancy part, the Russian part.”

With her family five months behind on rent, Margarita lands a spot on Slay, Serve, Survive, a new fashion competition series whose producer Nicol (Camila Mendes) takes a shine to her adversity and potential screen presence. But the role requires her to open her life up to the world, baring all her family’s struggle for a shot at the American Dream.

The clever comedy-drama spotlights post-Soviet life in L.A.’s gay capital for Jews who “weren’t considered real Russians or Ukrainians.” It’s a particularly relevant piece of representation amid the ongoing strife with Russia,...

‘Idiotka’ Review: Reality TV Satire and Heartwarming Family Dramedy Collide in a Messy but Winning Directorial Debut
Image
“I would describe my aesthetic as Old World trash and treasure,” says Margarita (Anna Baryshnikov), a few minutes into Idiotka. “She’s milking a cow at five, but she needs to be at the ballet at 5:10. Loves a bargain bin.”

As a description of a style, it’s nonsense. As an illustration of an imagined wearer, it’s word salad. And yet there’s something compelling about its quirkiness — which, in its way, makes it a perfect encapsulation of Idiotka. The feature debut by writer-director Nastasya Popov is certainly messy, a mélange of contrasting tones and contradictory ideas. But darned if it isn’t bursting with enough personality to charm you all the same.

For the first act or so, Idiotka presents itself as a sendup of a certain soulless type of content. Margarita’s explaining her look in that very first scene because she’s filming a submission...

‘Idiotka’ Review: A Russian-American Fashionista Bets It All on Reality TV
Image
One of the predominant worries of our age is the desire to live authentically. There’s a profusion of technological developments and variables — now extending to artificial intelligence — that both help and hamstring us from achieving this, with much neurosis and self-consciousness brought on if we can’t. The 2010s and the ongoing Trump era have also intensified the clamor for identity politics, where a sometimes fragile sense of empowerment is gained by asserting difference in the face of mass American conformity.

So, the faux-inspirational outcome is that we must embrace our truth, and “Slay, Serve, and Survive,” to reference the in-film reality show contest in Nastasya Popov’s SXSW premiere “Idiotka.” Premiering in the non-competitive Narrative Spotlight section, Popov’s upbeat and genial comedy capably interrogates these ideas, with its tale of a young, aspiring LA fashion designer (from a Russian emigré background not unlike the director’s own...

‘Idiotka’ Director Nastasya Popov And Stars Anna Baryshnikov And Camila Mendes Unpack Theme Of “Making Your Private Self Public”
Image
Following her executive production work on Prime Video’s Música, in which she also starred along the film’s writer and director Rudy Mancuso, as well as her EP role on the streamer’s romantic comedy Upgraded, in which she starred alongside Archie Renaux and Marisa Tomei, Camila Mendes’ latest double-duty project takes place in the world of fashion. Idiotka is an acquisition title out of the 2025 SXSW Film Festival, where it will premiere Wednesday.

“This project came through a mutual friend that I shared with our producing partner, Tess Cohen, a friend that I knew from high school. It’s very random, but awesome. It gripped me,” Mendes told Deadline of the film ahead of its premiere Wednesday. “I called my producing partner right away, Rachel Matthews, and I was like, we gotta do this. She’s like, ‘Babe, I’m with you. I just read the first two pages and I’m in.

The Oscar winner plays former United States President George Mullen, and in the opening seconds of the series, we're thrust right into chaos as Mullen searches his study through notebooks and other items on his desk. He picks up a broken frame with a picture dated in April 1975. Lights are whirring, people are pounding on the door to break in, but he frantically attempts to unlock his safe.

Before we can make sense of what's going on, the...

Netflix Exec Addresses ‘Emilia Pérez’ Karla Sofía Gascón Scandal
Image
Netflix has finally decided to address theEmilia Pérezcontroversy that lowered its chances of winning big at the Academy Awards. While the director and performers in the film have shared their views about the social media debacle of co-star Karla Sofía Gascón, the streamer had stayed silent throughout the scandal. However, Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria has now addressed the situation, and apparently, some changes will be made for future casting processes.

Emilia Pérez is a musical crime film starring Gascón alongside Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz, Mark Ivanir and Édgar Ramírez. It's written and directed by Jacques Audiard from the novel Écoute by Boris Razon. The movie won the Jury Prize and the Best Actress (for its female cast) awards at the 77th Cannes Film Festival. All We Imagine As Light Lost The Critics Choice Award To The Better Film Emilia Perez
Image
No, there is no imperial conspiracy against the Third World. Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light lost the Critics Choice award to Emilia Perez for the very simple reason that it was a lesser film.

Dare I say that? For months now, we have been spotlighting Ms Kapadia’s film as though it was the best thing to happen to cinema since Satyajit Ray’s Pather Panchali. Sorry, that was an overreaction. I have seen Ray’s Pather Panchali innumerable times, and each time, I came away with a new thrill.

I saw All We Imagine as Light a second time and could barely sit through it. While the salient characters’ profound forlornness is palpable—the nurses need some serious healing—the second overture in the Maharashtrian village lacks space, elegance, and even coherence.

French auteur Jacques Audiard’s new work Emilia Perez is a beast hard to tame.

'Emilia Pérez' and 'Wicked' Dominate 2025 Oscars With Most Nominations
Image
The nominees for the 97th Academy Awards have finally been announced after a short delay due to the recent fires in Los Angeles, and the controversial Netflix musical Emilia Pérez has made history by setting a record for the most nominations for a non-English language film with 13 nods. The French production of the Spanish-language musical crime thriller racked up all kinds of accolades on the festival circuit before it was released on Netflix back in Nov. 2024, and after having taken home four Golden Globe Awards earlier this month, its Oscar chances are now better than ever.

Despite the controversy surrounding the film in the LGBTQ+ and Latine communities, and over the recent revelation that AI was used in the production, Emilia Pérez earned nominations for Best Picture, Best Actress (Karla Sofía Gascón), Best Director (Jacques Audiard), Best Supporting Actress (Zoe Saldaña) Adapted Screenplay, Music (Original Score), Makeup and Hairstyling, Cinematography,...

Why 'Emilia Pérez' Is So Controversial
Image
Emilia Pérez had quite a contentious win at the 2025 Golden Globe Awards. The French-made, primarily Spanish language musical beat fan favorites like Anora, Wicked, and The Substance for Best Motion Picture-Musical or Comedy, despite containing what many have deemed controversial material. Emilia Pérez, essentially, follows the story of Emilia Pérez, a former cartel kingpin in Mexico who undergoes gender-affirming surgery and leaves her crime-ridden past behind with the help of a corrupt lawyer, all told through an absurdist musical style.

The film stars Karla Sofía Gascón in the titular role, as well as a supporting cast of the likes of Zoe Saldaña ( who took home the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress), Selena Gomez, and Adriana Paz. With such forces and wins behind it, why has Emilia Pérez been so polarizing? Here's a breakdown.

Netflix's Controversial Crime Movie With 48% Rt Audience Score Becomes Streaming Hit After Winning 4 Golden Globes
Image
Netflix's controversial crime movie, which has a 48% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, has become a streaming hit after winning four Golden Globes. Now that the calendar has turned, 2024 was another mixed year for Netflix movies. The streaming service regularly produces original films – such as Trigger Warning, Atlas, A Family Affair, and The Union – that are panned by critics but still watched by subscribers. However, Netflix did manage to produce a few standout movies in 2024 that garnered critical acclaim and have been contenders this awards season, including at the Golden Globes.

Netflix's black-comedy crime movie, Richard Linklater's Hit Man, featured a charismatic performance from Glen Powell, who earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. Pablo Larraín's latest biopic, Netflix's Maria, starred Angelina Jolie as the eponymous opera singer, who earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama.

Netflix’s Controversial Musical Grounds 'Wicked' with Golden Globes Win
Image
The controversial Netflix crime musical Emilia Perez emerged as one of the big winners at this year’s Golden Globes, becoming the second most-nominated movie in Golden Globe history and taking home not just the award for Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language but also Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. And some movie fans are not happy. But it’s not the subject of the movie, which follows a Mexican cartel leader who leaves the criminal world behind after transitioning into a woman, that has fans in shock. This is not some nonsense anti-woke issue. No, instead many movie fans are simply baffled why such a “trash” and “dogsh*t” movie has received so much awards attention.

Several of these films have even been among the highest-grossing movies of 2024.

There’s no clear recipe for how to make the audience cry, but rather it comes from authentic, human stories that project an important message through their characters. This isn’t easily done, and in many ways, making the audience cry is a clear indicator that any drama has achieved its goal fairly well. It proves that there’s some compassion and universality in the story, which is all that anybody could hope for.

In a social media post, Belinda noted that she usually refrains from commenting on other people’s lives, but after watching Derbez’s criticism, she felt compelled to defend Gomez.

“I think it’s unfortunate that people express themselves with such coldness of the work and effort of a talented and admirable woman like Selena Gomez,” Belinda wrote on her Instagram Stories.

She continued, “We need to be more empathetic with the comments we make, which can hurt people’s feelings. I wish social media was used for constructive criticism instead of destructive criticism.”

Belinda said that Gomez might not read her message but congratulated her for “everything you have achieved in your career,” adding, “We are billions of people who love everything you do.

Emilia Prez Review: Zoe Saldana's Spectacular Netflix Crime Musical Melodrama Defies All Genres
Image
This review was originally published on September 13, 2024, as a part of our Toronto International Film Festival coverage.

Emilia Prez is a film that defies classification. It is, all at once, a narco crime saga, a melodrama, and a pop opera tackling themes of identity, redemption, and evolution. It's wrapped in over-the-top musical theatrics, too, with the movie beginning with Zoe Saldaa's under-appreciated lawyer Rita performing a song about a murder case in the neon-lit streets of Mexico. From there, it gets even bolder.

Zoe Saldaña has worked with several of Hollywood’s most celebrated directors over the years, including James Cameron and J.J. Abrams, but one in particular “restored her faith” in the industry: Steven Spielberg.

Saldaña featured in Spielberg’s 2004 comedy-drama “The Terminal” alongside Tom Hanks and Catherine Zeta-Jones, which came right after her first big-budget role in “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.” Saldaña has been open about her experience on the set of “Pirates” not being the best, and during a Screen Talk at the BFI London Film Festival on Saturday, she said it almost caused her to “tip overboard.”

“I knew with that experience the kind of people that I wanted to work with,” Saldaña said of “Pirates.” “The crew and the cast, they’re 99% of the time super marvelous. But if the studio and the producers and the director, they’re not leading with kindness and awareness and consideration,...
