The Office Spin-Off The Paper Gets Certified Fresh On Rotten Tomatoes, Yet Fans Remain Split (Photo Credit – Hotstar)
The Office has returned in a new form with its official spin-off, The Paper, which premiered this week on Peacock. Over a decade after the American version of The Office ended its nine-season run on NBC, this new series brings back some familiar connections while introducing fresh faces. The Paper, co-created by Greg Daniels, who led the original adaptation, opened to mostly positive critical reception, though fans of the original have been slower to warm up. Created by Greg Daniels and Michael Koman, Peacock’s mockumentary-style drama series ‘The Paper’ is a rib-tickling tale of the people working at a failing newspaper called “Toledo Truth-Teller.” It chronicles the lives of Ned Sampson (Domhnall Gleeson), Esmeralda Grand (Sabrina Impacciatore), Mare Pritti (Chelsea Frei), and others as they try to redeem themselves and their newspaper, while also being followed by a documentary crew that takes an interest in the workplace.
Based on ‘The Office (British Version),’ created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, it is set in the world of ‘The Office (American Version),’ and looks at ideas of workplace politics and chaotic group dynamics intricately. As the...

Greg Daniels and Michael Koman opened up to TheWrap about how their decision to build a newsroom full of non-journalists in “The Paper” is rooted in their own long, lost love of the profession.
“I think anybody who likes to write has fantasized at some point about being a journalist,” Koman said. “To me, it’s like writing but with real life stakes.”
The show, which is a spinoff of Daniel’s American version of “The Office,” is centered on a failing Ohio-based newspaper called The Toledo Truth Teller. However, the team that makes up that newsroom isn’t anything close to a hard-hitting group of reputable journalists.

"The Paper" has brought viewers back to the "Office" universe with a long-awaited spin-off that's really only tenuously linked to the previous series. In reality, it didn't need to be associated at all. Indeed, beneath the "Office" associations, "The Paper" is a show that could easily flourish on its own terms, to the extent that by the end of the first season, I couldn't help but ask: Why is this even an "Office" spin-off?
During the final season of "The Office," NBC halted plans for a Dwight-led spin-off titled "The Farm," which was a good decision since it would've ruined the show's happy ending. After footage for the pilot was shot,...

The new Peacock comedy series isn’t perfect, but it so far appears to have potential as successor to ‘The Office.’
I haven’t made any secret of my love for “The Office.” Just a couple of weeks ago, I used the show’s Superfan episodes as my choice for my favorite stream of that week. With a deep love of rewatching the show ingrained in my head and heart, I approached the release of the new Peacock comedy series “The Paper” with trepidation, to say the least.

And just like that, the first season of Greg Daniels and Michael Koman’s “The Paper,” which is set in the same universe as Daniels’ “The Office,” has arrived. Romances were built, “Office” fans got their fill of nostalgia and by the time the show premiered on Peacock Thursday, news that it was coming back for a second season was already hot off the presses.
Twelve years after “The Office” closed up shop after nine seasons, the same crew that documented the everyday happenings of the Dunder Mifflin Paper Co. set their sights on a new group: the staff members of The Toledo Truth Teller newspaper.

[This story contains spoilers for episode five of The Paper, “Scam Alert.”]
The fifth episode of The Paper features an out-of-left-field guest appearance by a very well-known actor playing himself — more or less.
Josh Holloway (Lost, Yellowstone, Duster) appears in the episode, titled “Scam Alert.” The Toledo Truth-Teller digs into a catfishing scam that’s been targeting residents of the city, and it turns out the scammer is using Holloway’s likeness — and even paying him to make videos through Cameo — to bilk the victims. The catfisher poses as a soldier stationed in Germany who needs money to help buy a ticket home for Thanksgiving, escalating things from there.
As Truth-Teller editor Ned (Domhnall Gleeson) is laying out the details of the scam in a meeting, Esmeralda (Sabrina Impacciatore) silently leaves the room and closes her office door. The staff quickly realizes she’s a victim too — much to the delight of Nicole (Ramona Young), whom Esmeralda has repeatedly insulted.

The Paper unveiled its debut issue on Thursday — but it had to check in with an old friend first.
As you might have heard, Peacock’s new series is a spinoff of The Office, and Thursday’s premiere wastes no time in letting us know how the two shows are connected. It opens by telling us that in 2005, a documentary crew began following employees at a Scranton office… and 20 years later, they returned. We get a shot of that familiar business park, and good old Bob Vance (“Vance Refrigeration”) is still there. Dunder Mifflin, though, left the building a while ago,...

Peacock’s ‘The Paper’ follows Ned Sampson’s efforts to revive a dying local newspaper called the Toledo Truth Teller. Having recently taken over as the editor-in-chief, Ned is highly motivated to turn things around for the newspaper. However, there are several major challenges in his path, one of which is Esmeralda Grand. Before Ned came into the picture, Esmeralda was the one in charge, and she loved the power and freedom the job brought her. But now Ned is above her, and he is completely rewriting the rules and making Esmeralda feel irrelevant, and this makes her attack him even more. But as the season rolls on, we discover...

It might take place in a completely different time and environment, but fans of "The Office" would be forgiven for tuning into "The Paper" and hoping to see characters other than Oscar Martinez (Oscar Nuñez). It was revealed in the first trailer for the new spin-off of the award-winning sitcom that the former accountant from Dunder Mifflin's Scranton branch would be involved in the latest show (despite his reluctance), but the first episode of "The Paper" immediately features a cameo from the original comedy, and it's not just for fun.

The Office fans have either been looking forward to or dreading the day that has finally arrived: The premiere of the spinoff-reboot hybrid series The Paper. Most fans probably believe that it's best leaving the iconic NBC comedy series alone and untouched, in fear of tampering with its legacy. Some also likely think that if it's not a series that brings back the original cast, it's probably not worth diving back into this world. Well, ready or not, here a spinoff comes!
From The Office creator Greg Daniels and Nathan for You co-creator Michael Koman (who's also the husband of Office star Ellie Kemper), The Paper only brings back one character from the original series.

The last episode of The Office aired in May 2013, and it seems like talk of rebooting, reviving or spinning off the series started, oh, about two weeks after that.
A check of the historical record reveals that’s not quite the case. But reports of a reboot or revival have periodically burbled up since at least 2017 (not including a couple of spinoff ideas during the run of the show that never came to be). Meanwhile, the mockumentary format that The Office popularized has flourished in a host of other series, which did not go unnoticed among the show’s producers.
“We were watching as so many others were basically doing derivative versions of our show, whether they were paying homage to us, honoring us or ripping us off,” executive producer Ben Silverman tells The Hollywood Reporter. “It prompted Greg [Daniels] and I to just really focus hard on...

A new workplace comedy set in a local newspaper office in 2025 feels less like satire and more like a historical drama. The Paper, Peacock’s new mockumentary series, leans into this painful reality, finding its comedic pulse in the existential dread of a fading industry.
The show introduces us to the Toledo Truth Teller, a once-venerated institution now relegated to a corner of an office building it shares with a toilet paper company, Softees. This absurd cohabitation, managed by the parent corporation Enervate, perfectly captures the perceived value of local news in the modern age.

Halfway through its first season, The Paper is getting closer to finding its stride.
The show finally finds an angle for making the mundane lives of The Truth Teller journalists interesting, which is arguably what helped The Office gain the success that it did.
Additionally, the plotlines across the episodes offer a fresh look at the characters by highlighting the less favorable but still somehow endearing parts of themselves.

Esmeralda also proves to be a fascinating character to watch as her development is a pretty big highlight across both episodes.

The Harmony Gold movie theater in Hollywood bore unusual signage last Wednesday evening. In the shadow of Sunset Boulevard’s billboards promoting Peacock’s upcoming “The Office” spinoff, “The Paper,” the theater was labeled the Toledo Truth Tower — in homage to the new show’s central setting.
Created by Greg Daniels and Michael Koman, “The Paper” follows the staff of a dying local Ohio newspaper, the Toledo Truth Teller, as a new editor-in-chief tries to revive its journalistic prowess. It’s set in the same universe as “The Office,” and the documentary crew that followed Dunder Mifflin has now arrived at the Truth Teller’s doorstep, looking to cover a new set of subjects.
Koman explained that the tie makes sense both comedically and narratively. “You could have the exact same documentary crew that made the first documentary looking for a new subject,” he told Variety on the red carpet.

The Venice Film Festival hosted the world premiere of director Julian Schnabel’s In the Hand of Dante, adapted from the novel by author Nick Tosches. Attending the premiere were members of the film’s ensemble, including Oscar Isaac, Jason Momoa, Franco Nero, Benjamin Clementine, Duke Nicholson, and more.
The story follows author Nick Tosches, who is pulled into a violent quest to confirm the origins of a manuscript believed to be Dante’s (Isaac) The Divine Comedy, written in the poet’s own hand. After the sudden death of his daughter, Nick is summoned from self-imposed exile by a mafia don for his expertise on the Italian writer.
With the help of an unpredictable assassin named Louie (Gerard Butler), the pair embark on a dark and murderous journey to steal and authenticate the priceless work. Moving between the 21st and 14th centuries, the story weaves together the parallel lives...

There is no stopping painter-sculpter-filmmaker Julian Schnabel’s penchant for cinematically embracing fellow artists. In an impressive filmography, he always seems to be giving them their due with major introspection in films like his Oscar-nominated The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, which was about writer Jean-Dominique Bauby; Basquiat, about street artist Jean Michel Basquiat; Before Night Falls about Cuban poet and novelist Reinaldo Arenas; Lou Reed’s Berlin; and his most recent film, 2018’s At Eternity’s Gatem about Vincent Van Gogh.
His latest doesn’t veer from this interest but instead doubles down on it. Oscar Isaac stars in In the Hand of Dante, an epic that spans two eras 700 years apart with each drawn to the exact same masterpiece from the 14th century: the original manuscript of Italian poet Dante Alighieri’s “The Divine Comedy,” written in his own hand. Centuries later, in 2002, that manuscript is much desired...

The new show has an 87 percent at Rotten Tomatoes — not too shabby, especially when compared to the 71 percent that the first season of NBC's The Office nabbed in 2005, back when it was still finding its footing. Interestingly enough, the cumulative score for all nine seasons of that beloved parent show was just 81 percent, still not as good as The Paper's debut outing.

Director Julian Schnabel pushed back Wednesday against pro-Palestinian activists’ calls for his “In the Hand of Dante” actors Gal Gadot and Gerard Butler to be disinvited from this year’s Venice Film Festival over their past, public support of Israel.
Schnabel made his feelings on the matter known during Wednesday’s pre-premiere press conference for “In the Hand of Dante,” in which he insisted that Gadot and Butler’s personal views should not prevent them from promoting the film. “I think there’s no reason to boycott artists,” Schnabel told journalists.

We're just one day away from the highly-anticipated premiere of The Office spin-off, The Paper, and ahead of its release, critics on Rotten Tomatoes have chimed in to give their verdict on whether the new comedy manages to capture the same magic as the flagship series. Starring Domhnall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore, The Paper was created by Greg Daniels and Michael Koman, and is set to debut on Peacock on Sept. 4, 2025.
Thus far, the series has been receiving high praise from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, who have propelled the spin-off to a Certified Fresh rating of 87% at the time of this writing. Called a "smart, breezy, good-natured sitcom" by Richard Roeper from RogerEbert.

The American spin-off of The Office was something of a miracle. Stateside reboots of UK shows rarely make it past the first season. The Office 2.0 not only ran for nine seasons but gained enough slow-burning popularity to launch its own spin-off, sharing just a few threads of connective tissue and that same shaky, side-glance-to-the-camera mockumentary format.
It’s a tough act to follow a show that had such a unique lifespan, and to its credit, The Paper doesn’t lean too heavily upon its legacy. Co-created by The Office’s Greg Daniels, the premise has more thrust than its predecessor: the print edition...

Steve Carell‘s Michael Scott was a vital reason behind The Office‘s success, but it looks like the spinoff doesn’t need him to succeed. One day ahead of the release of season one, The Paper has been renewed for a second season.
The show’s renewal was announced on the Today show on Wednesday morning by actors Domhnall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore. According to a source who confided in The Hollywood Reporter, creator Greg Daniels already has ideas for season two, and the network plans on keeping the momentum going. The renewal will do just that.
In the United Kingdom and Ireland, season 2 has exclusively been acquired by Sky.

People love The Office. They re-watch The Office. They fall asleep to The Office. Through countless binges and marathons, the NBC sitcom has built up a fan devotion that borders on religious. (I know; I was an early convert.) That’s a lot to live up to, and Peacock’s new spinoff The Paper — debuting this Thursday; I’ve seen all 10 episodes — doesn’t quite get there. It does a decent job of mimicking The Office’s signature mix of awkward cringe comedy and sincere heart, and weaves in some sly laughs along the way. But it gets dragged down...

Everyone remembers the American version of “The Office,” that 2005 NBC comedy gem that turned Steve Carell into a household name, created one of the original ‘ships in Jim and Pam, and had everyone obsessed with beets and bears. That show has been off the air since 2013, but there are more than a dozen international formats to check out, each with variations of the same characters working in an office setting.
Since then, there’s also been plenty of American mockumentaries keeping “The Office” spirit alive, from “Abbott Elementary” to “St. Denis Medical.” But there’s been nothing quite like the Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant format that started it all.

The Office (US version) is hands down one of the greatest comedic sitcoms of all time. It’s a show that I have watched well over a dozen times and has become a staple of comfort in the Valero household. In modern society, we have seen shows like Sex & the City, Full House, and Roseanne all on the list of shows that have been brought back with a fresh version of the series. While some have found success, others, like this year’s Suits reboot, Suits LA, were Doa. Enter Greg Daniels and Peacock trying to recapture the magic that Michael Scott provided with a spinoff starring Domhnall Gleeson,...

The Toledo Truth Teller was a once great newspaper that’s now part of a vast corporation that makes more money from their toilet paper division. The paper operates out of a tiny office with an equally tiny staff. It has no reporters and does no reporting. The print edition is made up of articles that Mare (Chelsea Frei) copies and pastes from the news wires, while Esmerelda (Sabrina Impacciatore) keeps the online side stacked with clickbait pieces clogged with ads and devoid of anything even remotely resembling news.

In the U.S., local newspapers are closing down at a rate of two per week. More than half the counties in the U.S. don’t have a local news source at all. The paucity of reliable local news is thought to have sown political divisions among voters. And things aren’t much better at the quasi-national level. At The Washington Post — of “Democracy Dies in Darkness” fame — billionaire owner Jeff Bezos ordered his staff not to publish its planned endorsement of Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential race. Early this year, the story there was that the paper was “bleeding talent” due to clashes with ownership. This spring at The L.

Every TV fan knows the power of the workplace comedy.
Sure, there’s “The Office” and two decades of its single camera successors — but it’s also the backdrop of everything from earlier hits like “Murphy Brown” and “The West Wing” and classic examples of the genre like “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” To be a working American is to unwind by watching other working Americans.
It is in that rich tradition that “The Office” creator Greg Daniels teams up with co-creator Michael Koman for “The Paper,” which quickly sheds the pressure of a spinoff while introducing a new office full of people to love. Set in Ohio, the show follows a struggling local newspaper and its many employees. With no budget to hire real journalists, the “Toledo Truth Teller” sets out to become a local paper of repute, all while followed by the same documentary crew that captured “The Office.

The first season of The Paper, Peacock’s sorta kinda demi-spinoff of NBC’s The Office, is better than the first season of that show or the first season of NBC’s Parks and Recreation, which started its own creative life as a sorta kinda demi-spinoff of The Office before it became merely a stylistic and spiritual companion.
This is one of those things that sounds like a big deal if you put it on a billboard — “The Paper Is Better Than The Office or Parks and Recreation!”. But it is, ultimately, a reminder that The Office launched with a bumpy first season that struggled to blend new episodes and ill-fated remakes of the beloved BBC series before finding its own unique rhythms, while Parks and Recreation underwent one of TV’s all-time great transformations from a six-episode opening run of clunkers to a near-perfect second season.

“Innovate sales products made out of paper. So that might be office supplies, and that might be janitorial paper, which is toilet tissue, toilet seat protectors, and local newspapers, and that is in order of quality,” says Ken Davies with a smirk. What once used to be a bustling building full of enthusiastic journalists determined to break important news for the ‘Toledo Truth-Teller’ was taken over by the money-making toilet tissue company. At present, only a small team on the ninth floor works for the once iconic local newspaper. In the first few minutes of the pilot episode, The Paper aptly captures the state of journalism in today’s world.

The Paperhas delivered breaking news, hot off the press, just one day before the official launch of The Officespin-off. The Paperseason 2 has been renewed ahead of The Office spinoff show's premiere. The Office was one of the most successful sitcoms of all time during its nine-season run, between 2005 and 2013, and in early 2024, it was announced that creator Greg Daniels was working on a follow-up series, set at a different company.

Though a largely new cast of characters, Oscar Nuñez joined the cast of The Paper, reprising his role as Oscar Martinez from The Office.
