Prized at Locarno, El Gouna and Valladolid, ”Carne” celebrates and explores femininity through successive stages of life, as well as presenting a fresh examination on the perennial taboos that weigh on conceptions of the female body.

The short weaves highly disparate techniques – paint, watercolor, stop motion, 35mm film and virtual image decomposition via glitches and datamoshing. Sensorial styles correspond to the diversity of the testimonies in different stages of women’s life – “rare, medium rare, medium, medium well and well done,” as they are named in the short. She talked to Variety about the appeal of animation, techniques and references.

Top brass at the Rio de Janeiro Film Festival announced that 41 feature and 19 shorts from Brazilian filmmakers will screen in the 17th edition, set to run from October 1-14.

The Première Brasil competition section will screen 13 features, of which ten will receive world premieres. An additional two features and two documentaries will screen out of competition.

Other Brazilian productions such as a restoration of Walter Lima Jr’s 1965 classic Menino de Engenho (Plantation Boy) will screen in special Première Brasil sidebars such as New Trends, Panorama, Expectation and Fronteiras.

Première Brasil is the only competitive section of the festival and Redentors will be presented on closing night. The audience will vote on three awards for best Brazilian feature film, best documentary and best short film.

As part of this years commemoration of the 450 years of the founding of Rio, the festival will screen six films that have the city as its setting or reflect the theme of Rio...

The 17th edition of the International Film Festival of Kerala (Iffk) has announced its lineup. The festival will run from 7th to 14th December, 2012 in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.

Some of the highlights of the lineup are festival favourites of the year Amour, Chitrangada, Samhita, The Sapphires, Drapchi, Miss Lovely, Me and You, Celluloid Man, and Baandhon.

Fourteen films will screen in the Competition section while seven contemporary films will be screened in “Indian Cinema Now” section.

The 41st International Film Festival Rotterdam has selected its 15 films vying for their 2012 Tiger Awards Competition, including eight world premieres. All films mark first or second features for the filmmakers. Highlights include "It Looks Pretty from a Distance," the directorial debut of Polish visual artists Anka Sasnal and Wilhelm Sasnal, and "A Fish," directed by Hong-min Park, the first 3D film to screen in Rotterdam's competition lineup. This year's jury was also announced. Rome -- The World Premiere of Christopher Honore's "Man at Bath", and the international premieres of "Karamay," a 356-minute political documentary from Chinese director Xu Xin and Aaron Katz's mystery story "Cold Weather" will be among the highlights of the 20-film main competition at the 63rd edition of the Locarno Film Festival, organizers said Wednesday.

Wednesday's announcement also revealed the lineup for the festival's famous Piazza Grande venue, which will include the European premiere of Jay and Mark Duplass' comedy "Cyrus" -- John C. Reilly, the film's star, will be on hand to receive a special tribute -- Gareth Edwards' science fiction drama "Monsters," and "Gadkii Utenok" (The Ugly Duckling) from first-time Russian director Garri Bardine.

The picturesque Piazza Grande, which seats more than 8,000, is the largest outdoor film venue in Europe.

Buzz: Amaral might be considered the Terrence Malick of Brazil - not for her style, but her total output of films. Born in 1932, she first came onto the scene with The Hour of the Star in 86', and Hotel Atlantico is only her third feature film. Tiff's Latin film programmer Diana Sanchez mentions that there is "a palpable Lynchian aura to the film, with a vaguely defined threat seeping through the scenes. At the same time, the narrative and the performers are going with the flow, exuding a “living in the moment” energy that may be due to Amaral's Buddhist beliefs."
