With a career spanning seven decades, it's understandable that the late Christopher Plummer didn't enjoy every film in which he starred. Long before he starred alongside Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music, Plummer made his Broadway debut in 1954 and acted in various Shakespearean productions. He even almost starred as Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings, a role that was also offered to James Bond icon Sean Connery.

Additionally, Plummer portrayed multiple historical figures throughout his career, including Rudyard Kipling, author of The Jungle Book, Leo Tolstoy, and Kaiser Wilhelm II. However, fans can't forget his portrayal of real-life Navy officer Georg von Trapp in The Sound of Music. And yet, Plummer reportedly disliked the 1965 classic that had catapulted him into the spotlight.

The Hills are Alive in 70mm for “The Sound of Music” At The Academy – July 30
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presents a new print of the 1965 musical classic “The Sound of Music” as the fourth film in its series “The Last 70mm Film Festival” on Monday, July 30, at 7 p.m. at the Academy.s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. The evening will also welcome actress Kym Karath, who played Gretl, the youngest of the seven Von Trapp children in the film.

Based on the Broadway musical, the film follows Maria (played by Julie Andrews in her second Oscar®-nominated role) a young woman who leaves an Austrian convent to become a governess to the seven children of a widowed navy captain (Christopher Plummer). Restored print of “South Pacific” to be screened
HollywoodNews.com: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will present a recently restored 70mm print of “South Pacific” at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

The screening is presented in association with Center Theater Group, which is hosting the touring version of the current Broadway revival.

Following the screening, Center Theatre Group’s artistic director, Michael Ritchie, will lead an onstage discussion featuring Mitzi Gaynor, who portrays Ensign Nellie Forbush in the film.

Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein’s musical version of James Michener’s novel premiered on stage in 1949 and was adapted for film in 1958. Set against the backdrop of World War II, “South Pacific” explores the dynamics of romantic attraction and racial prejudice among several residents of a fictitious South Pacific island and members of the U.S. Navy.
