The only Hindi film singer the Mahatma heard, Manna Dey never got his due
Image
In his over half-a-century-long Hindi film career, he sang more than a thousand songs, but just three serve to demonstrate his position in the industry’s scheme of things – the madcap “Ek Chatur Naar” where Kishore Kumar beats him; the enchanting qawwali “Na to karvaan ki talash hai” where Mohammed Rafi emerges triumphant eventually; and the classical contest “Ketaki gulab juhi”, where he beats Pandit Bhimsen Joshi.

This was part of the misfortune of Prabodh Chandra ‘Manna’ Dey, born on this day (May 1) in 1919 in Calcutta. His classical training, innate talent, and “masculine” voice made him perfect for all shades of songs – romantic (including those for the vintage-aged), folk ballads, philosophical musings, and more, but he was never deemed a top-notch singer.

A nephew of gifted blind singer-composer Krishna Chandra Dey, who paved his way into music and films, Manna Dey’s forte was challenging, classical-based songs, especially those that his contemporaries considered difficult,...

Queen Elizabeth II: The Sweetest, Funniest Moments From Her Reign

The British are known for keeping a “stiff upper lip,” and Queen Elizabeth II was no exception. But those who were close to the queen knew that she had a great sense of humour underneath her serene and stoic public image.

From playing heartthrob to unexpected characters: Kunchacko Boban on his career arc
Image
InterviewThough he started as a romantic hero, in the last few years Kunchacko Boban has broken the shackles of the heartthrob image and stepped up his act. His next movie ‘Bheemante Vazhi’ releases on December 3.Neelima MenonPhoto by Anwar PattambiThis writer was in Class 12 when Aniyathipravu (1997) was released. Though touted as Baby Shalini’s debut as a heroine, teenage girls took stock of the quiet young man who looked deep into her eyes at the public library, handed her a romance novel and walked away, with a throbbing romantic melody wafting in the backdrop. During a time when Malayalam cinema was still grappling with themes that paid obeisance to the alpha male heroes, Kunchacko Boban was like a breath of fresh air, who took on the mantle that was left vacant by chocolate hero Rahman of the 80s. For the longest time Kunchacko played heartthrob and danced like a dream,...

Kate Middleton Has Something That No Other British Royal Bride Does
Catherine Princess of Wales
Image Source: Getty / Handout We've learned quite a bit about Kate Middleton since she officially joined the royal family in 2011, and getting to see her many milestones as the Duchess of Cambridge has been a real delight. Even though her new life as a duchess has afforded her the same opulent jewels, lavish living quarters, and frequent public appearances as everyone else, there's one thing Kate has that none of the other women in the family do: a college education. RelatedWhat Did Kate Middleton Do Before Becoming a Royal? When Kate and William met in 2001, they were both students at University of St. Andrews in Fife, Scotland. They graduated in 2005, William with a master's in geography and Kate with a master's degree (with honors) in art history - making her the UK's first royal bride with a university degree. The Details About Princess Diana's Untimely Death Are Still Shocking 20 Years Later
Princess Diana
Image Source: Getty / Anwar Hussein Princess Diana passed away in a tragic car accident in August 1997, and it's hard to believe that she has been gone for 20 years. The fascinating royal, whose beautiful legacy is constantly carried out by her two children, Prince William and Prince Harry, was only 36 years old when she died. After vacationing with her partner, Dodi Fayed, on his father's yacht on the French and Italian Riviera, the couple stopped in Paris on their way back to London. They had only planned on staying for one night, but everything changed shortly after midnight on Aug. 31, 1997. Princess Diana Was the First Member of the British Royal Family to Have Done This
Princess Diana
Image Source: Getty / Anwar Hussein Princess Diana was known for many things during her lifetime - being a great mother to sons Prince Harry and Prince William, her amazing sense of style, and her beautiful smile - but ultimately, she is best remembered for her undying passion for helping others. Diana was a patron of more than 100 causes around the world, some of which Prince William and Prince Harry now champion. One of the charities in question is the National AIDS Trust. The trust promotes the awareness of AIDS and helps prevent the spread of HIV, and in April 1987, Diana was invited to open the UK's first AIDS ward at Middlesex hospital. During her visit, Diana challenged the notion that HIV/AIDS was passed on by touch when she shook the hand of a dying AIDS patient without wearing gloves. The Adorable Reason Why Prince George's Trooping the Colour Outfit Looks So Familiar
King Charles III
Image Source: Getty / James Devaney As usual, Prince George and Princess Charlotte stole the show at the annual Trooping the Colour parade in London on Saturday. While we couldn't get enough of Charlotte and mom Kate Middleton's matching pink outfits, what George was wearing caught our eyes for another reason. Although he wasn't exactly thrilled to be there, the animated 3-year-old royal looked adorable in his white collared shirt and burgundy suspenders. It's not an out-of-the-ordinary outfit for George, who usually steps out in similarly put-together ensembles, but it does happen to bear a striking resemblance to an outfit Prince Harry wore to the Trooping the Colour ceremony in 1988. Just like Charlotte was styled to match her mom, 4-year-old Harry wore a shade of green nearly identical to the one Princess Diana was wearing. Cute, right? My Heart Belongs On A Trash Cinema Menu
Let me see your heart!

Let me break something down real quick. I justifiably catch a reputation as being someone who likes to like things. And that’s true. Whenever I have time to share movie talk with folks, I want to talk about the things I love. Because, for me, it’s just too darn easy to fall down a rabbit hole of negativity. When I stumble across something that thrills me, I want to share it. Even still, sometimes I’m a bit abashed when it comes to how enthusiastic I tend to be about things. This is especially true when I find a great new-to-me trash-cinema film. Over Easter Weekend, I got stuck on a “Blood” film kick. Don’t judge me. I like topical themes. Any road, that’s when I ran into Blood Diner. I had no idea this movie existed until I saw the poster flipping through movies on Shudder. When...

Why Queen Elizabeth II Once Cried Over a Ship
Prince Philip
Image Source: Getty / Tim Graham It was said that when Queen Elizabeth II's royal yacht, the Britannia, was decommissioned in 1997, she cried. It was a remarkable and rare show of emotion from the legendarily stoic queen, giving the public a brief glimpse into her private family life with husband Prince Philip. The public tear was also a testament to her love for what became known as the royals' country home at sea. When Elizabeth and Philip married in 1947, they didn't move into a new family home. In fact, they've never had the opportunity to build and furnish their very own space; over the past almost 70 years, they've moved from one inherited home - er, castle - to another. Yes, it's nearly impossible to feel sympathy for two royals with multiple estates. But the background of their housing situation proves why it was so meaningful when Elizabeth and Philip had...

Cannes 2014: Catch Me Daddy review - John Ford on the Yorkshire moors
This debut from Daniel Wolfe  featuring tremendous cinematography from Robbie Ryan  is a tense, troubled and troubling thriller about a British Pakistani girl on the run

Here is a flawed but interesting feature debut from former music video director Daniel Wolfe, co-writing with his brother Matthew. It is a grimly nihilist drama based on the murderous phenomenon of the "honour killing" in British Pakistani communities. When Laila (Sameena Jabeen Ahmed) runs away to live with her boyfriend Aaron (Conor McCarron) on a caravan on the edge of the Yorkshire Moors, her family refuse to tolerate it, and hire a posse of tough guys both white and South Asian to get her back; it's a little like John Ford's The Searchers, although the comparison is not stressed.
