He played Capt. Kovacs in the first Broadway production of Ferenc Molnár's "Olympia". The play was subsequently filmed as His Glorious Night (1929) with John Gilbert, and again as Un scandale à la cour (1960) with Sophia Loren.

Smooth, pleasant-looking, fair-haired British leading man (born in South Africa) with patrician good looks and Leslie Howard-like panache who sustained productive film careers in both England and Hollywood for most of his four-decade career opposite more florid female stars, such as Bette Davis.
