Biography

    • Richard Hunt did not have a face known to many -- his voice was known more than anything else. He was a major stronghold behind Jim Henson's "Muppets". 'Scooter', 'Janice', 'Sweetums' and a few others, were some of the "Muppets" that Richard was a performer and puppeteer of. He helped pave the way for Jim Henson and his company from the 1970s through the early 90s, until his surprising death in 1992 of AIDS.

  • He was cremated at Neptune Society in Paramus, New Jersey after his family had a private funeral for him in its crematory. Some of his ashes were sprinkled over the flower beds at the Hunt Family home in Closter, New Jersey.

Quotes

  • [on how he switched from working at a news studio to working as a puppeteer] Four months of it was all I could take, I decided to make a career of resting. I quit, went home and watched more Muppets. Then one day I thought, 'Hey, why don't I try to get with them?'
  • [Upon describing his earlier job of preparing weather reports on the radio] My qualifications for it were absolutely zilch. I used to stick my hand out the window, feel what was going on out there, and write the report.
  • [on what he contributes to his vitality] Two things: heredity, which I got free, and orange juice, which I buy by the gallon. No three things. Being with the Muppets helps too.
