U.K. production, sales and distribution outfit Signature Entertainment has acquired the U.K. and Irish rights to the action thriller The Prosecutor, directed by and starring Hong Kong superstar Donnie Yen (Ip Man), from Mandarin Motion Pictures.
The feature, produced by Yen and Raymond Pak-Ming Wong (Ip Man franchise) and written by Edmond Wong (Ip Man franchise), is also directed by Yen. The film stars Yen, Julian Cheung (The Grandmaster), Francis Ng (Infernal Affairs II), Kent Cheng (Why Me?), Michael Hui (Teppanyaki), and Kong Lau (Hard Boiled).
The action movie, inspired by an actual legal case in Hong Kong, follows a man who pleads guilty to drug trafficking after being framed. “Despite the confession, the veteran policeman-turned-prosecutor handling the case is convinced of the man’s innocence and pursues his own investigation, risking both his career and his life to bring the real perpetrator to justice,” according to a plot synopsis.

Her Story, Yihui Shao’s feature dramedy that became something of a feminist phenomenon in China, scored another big win by securing the top prize at the 27th Far East Film Festival (Feff), which concluded Friday night in the northern Italian city of Udine. The film, which grossed almost $100 million at China’s box office and inspired a thousand think pieces about its radical and refreshing themes, received Feff’s Golden Mulberry Audience Award. Her Story stars Song Jia and Zhong Chuxi, and tells the story of two single women who become neighbors, and despite their contrasting personalities and circumstances, become fast friends.
Feff’s second most coveted audience award, the Silver Mulberry, went to Anselm Chan’s Hong Kong family drama The Last Dance. Like Her Story, The Last Dance was a box office phenomenon in its domestic market, and is currently the highest grossing Hong Kong film of all time.

Four years after bringing the world the high speed comedy classic Smokey and the Bandit (and three years after their stuntman comedy Hooper and one year after Smokey and the Bandit II), director Hal Needham and star Burt Reynolds teamed up again for another high speed comedy, the goofball ensemble film The Cannonball Run. The film was a big hit, the sixth highest-grossing domestic film of 1981, and it was followed by a pair of less successful sequels, Cannonball Run II (1983) and Speed Zone (1989). Even though the follow-ups aren’t highly regarded, The Cannonball Run is still a well-known title, which is why we’ve been hearing rumblings of a remake for years. Now, industry scooper Jeff Sneider of The InSneider reports that Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan is likely to be the one to finally bring The Cannonball Run back to the screen, as his production company, Bosque Ranch, is developing...

The most recent of these, Emperor Motion Pictures’ The Last Dance, released in November 2024, has become the highest-grossing Hong Kong film of all time – indeed the highest-grossing Chinese-language film ever at the Hong Kong box office – grossing more than $20M (Hk$161M).
The film has also performed strongly on its international release – taking more than $800,000 in the UK, where it’s the third highest grossing Hong Kong film of all time behind Stephen Chow’s Kung Fu Hustle and Wong Kar Wai’s In The Mood For Love. Despite the challenges currently faced by the Hong Kong film industry, a wave of new filmmakers has emerged in recent years. Backed by government funding and the mentoring of experienced local producers and directors, these talents have seen encouraging box office results at home as well as festival play and some commercial success overseas.
Unlike Hong Kong’s previous generation of filmmakers, which specialized in crime thrillers and martial arts action movies, these younger directors tend to work with much smaller budgets and focus on realistic characters and social issues relevant to their hometown of Hong Kong. Few of these filmmakers are aiming for mainland Chinese audiences, due to the high costs, cultural differences and censorship issues that complicate releasing films in that market.

It is fair to say that Donnie Yen‘s last stint as a director, which came with 2023’s “Sakra”, was quite the misfire from the martial arts legend. Despite housing decent action set pieces, as can be expected from Yen, its narrative shortcomings were ultimately its downfall. This is also why there is both some apprehension and a lot of anticipation over his latest directorial, “The Prosecutor”, whose promotional material seems to have promised a return to form for Yen both as a director and actor. Let’s find out if it stays true to its promise.

Donnie Yen is continuing his return to the director's chair after a 20-year break with The Prosecutor. Having started his career as a stuntman in Hong Kong, Yen first began finding success with the TV adaptation of Bruce Lee's Fist of Fury, as well as choreographing and starring in numerous Hollywood action movies, including Blade II. Though having worked as an action director multiple times throughout his career, Yen's list of full directorial efforts is relatively smaller, ranging from 1997's Legend of the Wolf to 2004's Protégé de la Rose Noire, after which he wouldn't direct again until 2023's Sakra.
The Prosecutor sees Yen reteaming with Ip Man franchise writer Edmong Wong and producer Raymond Wong, also centering himself as lead character, Fok Chi-ho, a police detective who, after a gang leader is acquitted of his crimes, elects to become a public prosecutor instead. The action’s hot but the dramatic temperature varies in “The Prosecutor,” a flashy combination of Hong Kong crime story and legal drama starring and directed by Donnie Yen. The veteran action star is convincing and charismatic as a cop who quits the force to become a crusading Department of Justice prosecutor but is let down by a screenplay that’s prone to bouts of melodrama in and out of the courtroom. Entertaining enough despite its flaws, “The Prosecutor” has topped the Hong Kong box office for two weeks (thus far) since opening on Dec. 21 and ought to perform well in limited U.S. theatrical release from Jan. 10.
Containing less action than a regular Donnie Yen film, and with his character delivering lines such as “I’m getting old, I can’t catch thieves anymore” and “I just got old” as a reason for his career change, “The Prosecutor” sparked...

The prosecution never rests in Donnie Yen’s new action-infused legal drama The Prosecutor, in which the veteran martial artist plays a righteous cop who quits the force to join the Department of Justice when he feels the legal system is letting too many criminals slip through its fingers.
Yen directs as well as stars alongside a host of familiar faces including Francis Ng, Julian Cheung and the increasingly ubiquitous Michael Hui, but Yen’s hardcore action fanbase may be left wanting. The Prosecutor too often feels more invested in bludgeoning its audience into submission using the tenets of Hong Kong’s rule of law, rather than the iron fists of traditional street justice.
On paper, The Prosecutor, which releases in the U.S. today, seems tailor-made for Yen, especially at a moment in his career when he is actively looking to broaden his dramatic range. The script, from regular Ip Man scribe Edmond Wong,...

Hong Kong moviegoers continued to prove their willingness to turn out for local productions in 2024, pushing Anselm Chan’s funeral drama The Last Dance to become the most successful local film of all time at the Hong Kong box office with over $18 milion.
The success of The Last Dance followed Soi Cheang’s nostalgia-fueled martial arts thriller Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In (Hong Kong’s Oscar submission) and its portrayal of the notorious, long-demolished Kowloon City neighborhood. There is a sustained desire, it would seem, to preserve and celebrate specific elements of Hong Kong culture which have come under threat in recent years, as the city is fast coming to resemble just another Chinese metropolis.
The Last Dance enshrines precisely the same sensibility as its recent box office predecessors, albeit in a markedly different tone. Chan’s previous features, Ready O/R Knot (2021) and its sequel Ready O/R Rot (2023), were both broad comedies.

After several years of stalled development and delays, Donnie Yen's film adaptation of the Sleeping Dogs video game is dead. The Sleeping Dogs film was originally announced back in 2017, with Original Film and DJ2 Entertainment set to produce the project. Unfortunately, there has hardly been any news following the initial announcement, making the movie feel less and less likely as the years went on. While there have been minor updates on the project, such as a potential director and Yen's statements in 2018 about trying to get the film moving forward, there largely been radio silence.
Now, in a new interview with Polygon, Donnie Yen has provided a sad update on the Sleeping Dogs adaptation. Given that Yen was set to star in the video game adaptation, the actor's latest comments are even sadder, as he describes the effort he put into making it happen and trying to find...

In Anselm Chan’s The Last Dance, Dayo Wong plays Dominic Ngai, a wedding planner whose life falls apart after the pandemic forces him into the funeral business. This change not only serves as a plot device but also reflects how fragile life is and how we can end up going in unexpected directions during crises.
The film uses nonlinear action telling, combining flashbacks and present-day interactions to increase our understanding of Dominic’s struggles. This method is reminiscent of modern film directors like Noah Baumbach, who use complicated character interactions to explore adult complexities. In traditional stories, the difference between happy weddings and sad funerals creates a compelling tension that makes the story more interesting.
The relationship between Dominic and Master Man Kwok (Michael Hui), a traditionalist whose strict adherence to Taoist practices clashes with Dominic’s more contemporary methods, is at the heart of the narrative. This conflict...

Comedy legends Michael Hui and Dayo Wong are no strangers to ruling the box office. Back in 1976, Hui directed and starred in “The Private Eyes”, which went on to become the highest grossing domestic film of its time in Hong Kong. His last directorial “The Magic Touch” in 1992, which also coincidentally featured Dayo Wong in a prominent role, ended up being financially the most successful work of his career as a director. Wong, for his part, starred in “A Guilty Conscience” last year, which still reigns supreme as the highest grossing domestic film of all time in the country. The fact that these two box office kings unite in the same project, only for the second time, for Anselm Chan‘s “The Last Dance” makes it one of the most anticipated films of the year.

An irascible priest loses his patience with a newcomer to Hong Kong’s funeral traditions in punchy melodrama of a film
Starting out as a prickly comedy in which wedding planner Dominic (Hong Kong standup icon Dayo Wong) switches to the funeral business, The Last Dance takes a sudden sombre turn. Dominic lands a seemingly unhinged client, turned down by all his competitors, who wants him to embalm her young son. As a string of putrefied matter hangs from the boy’s back while he is dressing him, Dominic realises he has already been dead for six months. It’s not the only mortician scene – and not the only note of unsettling realism with which writer-director Anselm Chan ballasts this well-constructed and punchy melodrama.
Bequeathed the funeral agent gig by his girlfriend’s retiring uncle, Dominic must get to grips with his new business partner: ball-breaking Taoist priest Master Man...
