A24's Worst Reviewed Horror Film Of 2024 Finds Newfound Streaming Success After Box Office Disappointment
Image
A24's worst-reviewed horror film of 2024 finds streaming success after disappointing at the box office. The independent studio's first horror film was director Robert Eggers' debut in 2015, The Witch, which received rave reviews from critics and became a sleeper hit at the box office. In turn, The Witch helped establish the distinct tone for A24 horror movies, which widely prioritize atmospheric tension over cheap jump scares, as seen in Talk to Me, Ti West's X trilogy, Ari Aster's Hereditary and Midsommar, and more.

With the calendar having turned, 2024 was another strong year for A24. The overwhelming majority of their movies from the past year earned critical acclaim and, in turn, strong Rotten Tomatoes scores, including their Oscar contenders, Sing Sing and The Brutalist (92%). This extends to A24 horror as well, with I Saw the TV Glow (84%), MaXXXine (72%), and Heretic (91%) all finding success. However, two of A24's biggest...

Brandy's A24 Thriller 'The Front Room' Finds Streaming Success on Max
Image
After failing to meet box office expectations, Max and Sam Eggers' directorial debut, The Front Room, has become a streaming success. When the psychological horror thriller landed in theaters in September, it was projected to gross $5 million but fell a bit flat, bringing in barely its supposed budget, $3.2 million; it also became A24's lowest-rated movie of 2024 on Rotten Tomatoes. The critically divisive film (which currently holds a 42% rating on the review site) now sits at the number two spot in Max's most streamed movies, topped only by Clint Eastwood's Juror #2.

Based on the 2016 short story of the same name by Susan Hill, The Front Room stars Brandy Norwood as Belinda, a pregnant woman whose life is thrown into disarray when her aging mother-in-law, Solange (Kathryn Hunter), moves in with Belinda and her husband. Solange's arrival creates tension; her eccentric behavior and weird demands push Belinda beyond her limits.

[This story contains major spoilers from the finale of The Madness.]

This has been Colman Domingo’s year. A 95% Rotten Tomatoes HBO Show Gets an Exciting Season 2 Update 3 Years Later

Mare of Easttown was released as a limited series on HBO in 2021. Three years later, creator Brad Ingelsby says he is open to developing new episodes.

"We're always open to revisiting Mare," Ingelsby told reporters during an HBO press conference via Deadline. "I would welcome the chance if we could craft the story. Mare's journey was so emotional, and it was hard to come up with an emotional story. It's hard to come up with one that could compete with losing a son and having to confront that. There are a lot of plotlines we could explore [but] I want to give Mare some space before we build up another emotional trauma. That's hard to jump back into."

The Front Room Directors Reveal Inspiration For The Psychological Horror Film
Image
Max and Sam Eggers made their directorial debut with the A24 film The Front Room. Following its release on Sept. 6, the filmmakers credited their brother and fellow director Robert Eggers as the inspiration behind their vision.

"His attention to detail and I think the amount of research that he does for individual shots, I think learning from him and seeing that, working on this stuff, I think we tried to sort of honor that method but also do our own thing in that way," Sam told MovieWeb. Max, who co-wrote The Lighthouse with Robert, also cited his brother's work on the 2019 film as further inspiration. "It's the intent," he explained. "I will never forget the first screening and, you know, I had no idea what people were gonna say about The Lighthouse. And the fact that there's any response at all is amazing."

The Front Room Directors on Sharing Bro Robert Eggers' Love of the Weird
Image
We spoke with filmmakers Max and Sam Eggers about their new film The Front Room, a gripping A24 thriller that dives into themes of religion, race, family dynamics, and more. If the name "Eggers" sounds familiar, it's true that Max and Sam are indeed brothers to groundbreaking director Robert Eggers, who they say inspired their vision for The Front Room. "His attention to detail, and I think the amount of research that he does for individual shots, I think learning from him and seeing that, working on this stuff, I think we tried to sort of honor that method but also do our own thing in that way," said Sam Eggers, who also worked on The Witch (2015).

Speaking of Robert Eggers, his 2019 masterpiece The Lighthouse was co-written by Max Eggers. Both that film and The Front Room garner the same sort of purposefully uncomfortable laughs from the audience as they watch unbearable tension build.

Megalopolis Star Kathryn Hunter on Coppola's 'Incredibly Bold' New Film
Image
We spoke with celebrated actress Kathryn Hunter leading up to the release of her new A24 thriller The Front Room, where she plays a sort of wicked mother-in-law of new mom Belinda, played to perfection by Brandy Norwood. Born Aikaterini Hadjipateras, Hunter seems to steal the show in virtually every high-profile project shes appeared in of late The Tragedy of Macbeth, Andor, and the list goes on.

Beyond The Front Room, Hunter is co-starring in Francis Ford Coppolas highly anticipated new film Megalopolis. Sure, it has already faced a few controversies leading up to its release, but the cast alongside Hunter is stacked, and Megalopolis is a passion project the Oscar-winning filmmaker has apparently been constructing for decades. "I think what Francis has done is incredibly bold," Hunter told MovieWeb, "So don't go in expecting... The Front Room Review | Hard to Watch A24 Nightmare About Awful In-Laws
Image
In-laws, am I right? Just when you thought you had it tough, you take in the outrageous predicament laid out in The Front Room, and you're left wondering if maybe the hand you're dealt ain't all that bad. A24's new psychological thriller ultimately throws a lot at the wall, and some of it sticks well: the racially charged story tropes, the chills reminiscent of classic feminine horror like Rosemary's Baby, and, as promised in the promotional campaign, Brandy's glorious return to horror.

Yes, it's been 25 years since the famed singer and actress' character survived the cunning sequel to I Know What You Did Last Summer, and as Brandy recently told us, she may even be back for its own legacy sequel. In the meantime, from writer-directors Max and Sam Eggers, working off a chilling short story of the same name by Susan Hill, The Front Room offers enough edgy...

A24's The Front Room Ends Studio's Fresh Rotten Tomatoes Streak
Image
A24's upcoming horror film The Front Room looks to end the critically acclaimed studio record. Directed by Max and Sam Eggers, the brothers of acclaimed filmmaker Sam Eggers, The Front Room stars Brandy as Belinda, a pregnant woman who discovers that her stepmother-in-law Solange (Kathryn Hunter) is working her way to manipulate her stepson and take the baby from the young family for her own sinister means. A24 has earned a reputation for redefining the horror genre in the 21st century with films like Talk to Me, Heriditerary, and even Robert Egger's The Witch, so there was a certain level of expectation for The Front Room to deliver another critically acclaimed horror film.

That does not seem to be the case as Max and Sam Eggers's debut feature film will not match their older brother Robert Eggers. The initial Rotten Tomatoes score for The Front Room was revealed at 46%, with thirteen reviews.

‘The Front Room’ Review: Brandy vs. Kathryn Hunter in Dubious Geriatric Horror
Image
Blood may be thicker than bile, but it’s damn near impossible to deliver a bona fide fright classic fresh out the gate, even if you’re closely related to one of the genre’s leading torchbearers. With The Front Room, Max and Sam Eggers strive to lay claim to their own little corner of the horror genre, mixing light surrealism and gross-out humor for a blackly comic, ill-mannered romp whose parts are ultimately more compelling than the arthritic whole.

Anthropology professor Belinda (Brandy) isn’t looking forward to being a mother. Haunted by the stillbirth of her first child, watching herself being frozen out of her university job, and struggling to pay the mortgage, she and her public defender husband, Norman (Andrew Burnap), could use a little divine intervention. It seemingly arrives in the form of Norman’s estranged, bible-thumping stepmother, Solange (Kathryn Hunter), who, after the death of his father,...

Brandy sparked a sharp buzz when the singer and songwriter teased the trailer for A24s upcoming horror movie, The Front Room on her Instagram account a few weeks back. The psychological thriller film is the directorial debut of the Eggers Brothers and is based on the 2016 short story of the same title by Susan Hill. The short story is often praised for its precision and compelling narrative that depicts the strain of family dynamics and the introduction of a disturbing outsider that intensifies as the story progresses. Delving into psychological horror rather than relying on gore or shock value, the film's subtle approach to horror makes the story both haunting and thought-provoking as Brandy stars alongside Kathryn Hunter, Andrew Burnap, and Neal Huff.

"She's taking over the house!" This looks nuts! A24 has revealed a second trailer for a horror thriller titled The Front Room, marking the feature directorial debut of the Eggers Brothers - Max & Sam. They're also brothers of the filmmaker Robert Eggers and worked with him on a few of those films, too. This new original horror film in ready to land theaters early in September. The Front Room is about a young, newly pregnant couple who must suddenly take in an ailing, estranged stepmother. A24 describes it as: the incomparable Brandy returns to horror in a legendary face-off against Kathryn Hunter, the wickedest mother-in-law of them all. Starring singer / actress Brandy Norwood as Belinda, with Andrew Burnap, Neal Huff, and Kathryn Hunter. This still looks a lot like Get Out, though I'm hoping that Brandy fights back and takes her down. Plenty of crazy Wtf shots in this new trailer!

‘The Front Room’ Trailer: The Eggers Brothers Direct Brandy In A New A24 Horror
Image
Apparently, the creepy, chilling moods of Robert Eggers aren’t the only game in town. At least not the only Eggers game in town. Eggers may have “Nosferatu” coming as a major release in December, but his brothers Max Eggers and Sam Eggers—who have worked on some of his previous films—have their own movie coming out this fall titled, “The Front Room.”

Featuring Brandy Norwood, Andrew Burnap, Neal Huff, and Kathryn Hunter, “The Front Room” is a horror about motherhood and, essentially, two mothers battling for control of a newborn child.

The Front Room Trailer Reminds You That In-Laws Are Terrifying
Image
Okay, this looks fun. "The Front Room" is a new horror pic from the folks at A24, and it hails from writer-directors Max Eggers and Sam Eggers. The name "Eggers" will no doubt be familiar to some genre fans — Max and Sam are the brothers of Robert Eggers, director of "The Witch," "The Lighthouse," "The Northman," and the upcoming "Nosferatu." Can the brothers Eggers find the same sort of success as Robert? We'll have to wait and see, but I have to admit, "The Front Room" trailer, which you can watch above, looks mighty promising. Loaded with religious imagery and playing up the notion that young people are all at least a little afraid of the elderly, "The Front Room" stars Brandy as a pregnant woman who takes in her mother-in-law (Kathryn Hunter) after the old woman's husband dies. This turns out to be a huge mistake.

The Front Room trailer | Brandy has a mother-in-law from hell in A24’s latest horror flick
Brandy Norwood in The Front Room (2024)
Brandy returns to the world of horror in A24’s new horror film which finds her character facing a truly evil mother-in-law. Watch The Front Room trailer below.

Your in-laws being the worst is the butt of many jokes, but what if your mother-in-law was actually evil? Not in a “you’re not good enough for my son” kind of way, more like “she might be stealing my child for demonic purposes” kind of evil.

Take a look at The Front Room trailer below.

The Front Room is directed by Max and Sam Eggers and yes, they are indeed related to Robert Eggers, who is getting ready to release Nosferatu later this year. It seems that all three brothers have the knack for horror, it must run in the family. The Eggers brothers are directing the film from their own script.

Here’s the official synopsis: Everything goes to hell...
