The 10 Best Horror Flicks

by CraigMRosenthal • Created 14 years ago • Modified 14 years ago
This obviously will be up for debate but, in my opinion, these are excellent horror movies. Also, this list is in no particular order. These are films that I truly like and it's hard to say what is my favorite.

  • Doug Bradley in Hellraiser II : Les Écorchés (1988)

Kirsty is brought to an institution after the horrible events of Le Pacte (1987), where the occult-obsessive head doctor resurrects Julia and unleashes the Cenobites and their demonic underworld.
    DirectorTony RandelStarsDoug BradleyAshley LaurenceClare Higgins
A lot of people will debate that the first film was better but I liked this for it's sheer imagination, brilliant score, and excellent special effects given the small budget. Not only that, this film is in the rare category of films that can be watched over and over again.
  • Le retour des morts-vivants (1985)

    2. Le retour des morts-vivants

    19851h 31m1266Metascore

When two bumbling employees at a medical supply warehouse accidentally release a deadly gas into the air, the vapors cause the dead to rise again as zombies.
    DirectorDan O'BannonStarsClu GulagerJames KarenDon Calfa
Excellent, fun and hilarious. This movie made watching zombies a fun thing unlike Romero's depressing "dead" series (those were great as well). Too bad just about all the sequels were horrendous (Rave to the Grave, anybody?).
  • House (1985)

A troubled writer moves into a haunted house after inheriting it from his aunt.
    DirectorSteve MinerStarsWilliam KattKay LenzGeorge Wendt
Great campy fun. Who would have guessed that William Katt would have made such a great lead. Also, excellent direction from Steve Miner. Probably his best work. A lot of imagination here.
  • America Olivo in Neighbor (2009)

    4. Neighbor

A mysterious new girl arrives in posh suburban neighborhood and quickly sets out to terrorize the town. As she starts breaking into homes and torturing the occupants, they begin to realize that she isn't just another girl next door.
DirectorRobert A. MasciantonioStarsAmerica OlivoChristian CampbellJoseph Aniska
Not really sure why this one has such a low score here. I am not one to be a huge fan of the torture porn genre but man, this movie had me squirming. No real redeeming qualities here but I really liked this. It's seriously disturbing and warped and that is probably why I like it so much. Horrible cover, though. Had I not seen in On Demand I would never have given this the time of day because that cover is just awful.
  • Creepshow (1982)

    5. Creepshow

    19822h1259Metascore
    6.8 (56K)
Five grisly tales from a kid's comic book about a murdered father rising from his grave, a bizarre meteor, a vengeful husband, a mysterious crate's occupant, and a plague of cockroaches.
DirectorGeorge A. RomeroStarsHal HolbrookLeslie NielsenAdrienne Barbeau
This was the first horror film I remember watching. I was about 3. Stephen King and George Romero collaborating made for an incredibly fun experience. For someone that loves horror movies there isn't anything not to like. It's hilarious with some really cool special effects from Tom Savini. And the last story with EG Marshall and the roaches was classic. The sequel was good as well but lacked compared to this one. Stay far, far away from Creepshow 3 though. God awful film.
  • Connie Mason in Orgie sanglante (1963)

    6. Orgie sanglante

An Egyptian caterer kills various women in suburban Miami to use their body parts to revive a dormant Egyptian goddess while an inept police detective tries to track him down.
DirectorHerschell Gordon LewisStarsWilliam KerwinMal ArnoldConnie Mason
Pretty much the start of the gore genre, this can be argued that it's a terrible movie but I love this flick. The acting is atrocious, the storyline outrageously stupid, and the gore effects silly and highly unrealistic. But that is why I like this movie so much. It's a classic in its genre and deserves to be.
  • La révolte des morts-vivants (1972)

    7. La révolte des morts-vivants

    19721h 41mPG
    6.1 (6.8K)
Medieval knights executed for their black magic rituals come back as zombies to torment a group of vacationing college kids.
DirectorAmando de OssorioStarsLone FlemingCésar BurnerMaría Elena Arpón
Not at all a part of the Mark of the Devil series. This is a beautifully crafted horror film that is moody, amazingly atmospheric, and down right creepy. None of the sequels were quite on par with this but they all shared excellent atmosphere.
  • Sandra Peabody in La Dernière Maison sur la gauche (1972)

    8. La Dernière Maison sur la gauche

    19721h 24m1668Metascore
    5.8 (42K)
Two teenage girls heading to a rock concert for one's birthday try to score marijuana in the city, where they are kidnapped and brutalized by a gang of psychopathic convicts.
    DirectorWes CravenStarsSandra PeabodyLucy GranthamDavid Hess
I've never been able to look at David Hess the same way after his role in this film. This was Craven's first film and he made a statement right off the bat. Although a bit dated, this film is highly disturbing and is a thousand times better than the remake. This also remains to be my favorite Wes Craven film.
  • Catriona MacColl and David Warbeck in L'Au-delà (1981)

    9. L'Au-delà

    19811h 27m1638Metascore
    6.6 (27K)
A young woman inherits an old hotel in Louisiana where, following a series of supernatural "accidents", she learns that the building was built over one of the entrances to Hell.
    DirectorLucio FulciStarsCatriona MacCollDavid WarbeckCinzia Monreale
You can say what you want about Lucio Fulci but this was an excellent film. Gory, dreamlike, and just plain bizarre. This was a masterpiece of Italian horror.
  • Prince des ténèbres (1987)

    10. Prince des ténèbres

    19871h 42m1250Metascore
    6.7 (53K)
A group of graduate students and scientists uncover an ancient canister in an abandoned church, but when they open the container, they inadvertently unleash a strange liquid and an evil force on all humanity.
    DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsDonald PleasenceLisa BlountJameson Parker
Really a rather frightening film from John Carpenter. This film is expertly written and is a rather intelligent horror film. The dream sequences are genuinely creepy and the twist on religion is very welcome. Especially in an era (the 80's) where most people just wanted to go and see Jason murder campers or Freddy haunt your dreams.
