"A stylish debut by filmmaker Harold Brodie, Orphans and Angels takes the classic film noir genre and gives contemporary relevance in urban New Zealand, as the scarred protagonist and ruthless villain execute their dangerous dance. Erotically charged and cleverly developed characterizations with a interesting plot that unravels slowly but keep us guessing. Solid performance from Emmeline Hawthorne as Theresa and Christopher Brown as the conflicted manipulator Cal Wilson is quiet good as Theresa's best friend, a lesbian who can quickly see through people. The music adds a wonderful mood to the film I must say, complementing the excellent production design"
Right! I felt a bit angry half way through the movie. I admitted I forwarded and rewind a few scenes I thought there were funny. But the idea of a gay person going to a future where you can be gay and it is acceptable as "normal" and the same character decided that he is "straight" did not make any sense to me. However I think this movie is about being an "Outsider" rather than an "Insider" (as the main character says at the end "sometimes what I want it is not what I need"). I agreed with previous comments, you don't really know what audience this movie target, but I have to say it is an interesting concept the director brings to the screen, isn't perfect but a good effort.
I was impressed by this movie, no only for the topic it touches but the cinematography..! It is endless beautiful and the colors used in the movie are marvelous. One feels the movie flows with colors and poetry. This is not a normal movie, this is not a blockbuster, this movie comes from a genius mind. The director used so many different tactic to get this from a script to the screen, the colors, the dialog, the actors, so perfectly done that every single shot looks a piece of canvas placed into the big screen. The atmosphere is at times claustrophobic but nevertheless engaging Can't say enough good things about this film BRAVO MAESTRO !!
