I'm not the target demo here, so I can't be too harsh on it and have to take that into account... but, yeeesh.
Decided to go see this on a whim on a Saturday matinee. My partner is a Minecraft player, so I'm very familiar with the game and appreciated that part of the movie. But, visually this movie was rough. Acting wasn't great and overall it just felt weird and off. Like I was watching a feature length commercial or something. Just didn't feel like a movie.
I can see kids enjoying it, so that's good because they're the target and won't care too much about the extraneous details. I just think we should set the bar a little higher?
Overall just kinda fine, but below average.

Overall it was fine but the kid was so irritating that I was mostly just annoyed and didn't care what happened to him.
This mostly seemed half-baked and not like something I will likely ever watch a second time because it's relatively joyless. There's nothing to draw you in. It falls into the same category as movies like The Hole in the Ground that are trying to recapture what made The Babadook successful but not offering anything particularly compelling.
I'd say this is perfectly fine for like... a Sunday afternoon in October 2024 viewing but I can't see it having much appeal outside of that.

There's nothing "bad" about Stopmotion and I enjoy Aisling Francoisi as a genre actress but there's nothing very interesting or new here. Beyond the cool imagery (which certainly borrows from Dead Ringers and Videodrome) there are 100 other movies with an identical plot and progression and ultimately Stopmotion is just kind-of ends up being a boring and joyless trip down that familiar path.
You could just watch the director's other work to appreciate the macabre art style instead of watching this and probably end up being more satisfied with the viewing experience. I didn't dislike Stopmotion, but it's pretty forgettable.
