A bit of a difficult one for the writers to keep on the boil, and the show was ultimately the victim of the modern day society's inability to keep engaged if the pace isn't fast fast fast.
It was always a series that demanded the viewer's attention. Strolling off to grab a drink and a sandwich mid episode just doesn't work. It's such a well crafted (and well acted) show, that it deserved another series (regardless of some uncertain moments midway through S1).
Can't help but think the show (could and would) have delivered a whole lot more in S2, but a complex storyline coupled to a series ending that was unworthy of what gone before, and perhaps Archive 81 perhaps unwittingly contributed to its own downfall.
A crying shame, as quality drama associated with super/paranormal themes are very rare beasts. Yet again, it seems dumbed down FX laden nonsense wins the day.

SW has been a good friend to us all, but as the saying goes, "all things must pass", and S28 kind of feels as though (for a while at least), the show has run its course. Decent story lines still abound, but really good ones are becoming increasingly thin on the ground.
Romance story arcs have for me at least, diminished the show by quite a margin. Nothing to do with the actors on show. Indeed, a couple of new faces on show have kind of propped things up reasonably effectively, but for too many episodes, stalwarts of the show are struggling to conceal a wee bit of "going through the motions".
I guess even more new faces are required should S29 make it into production. Over 280 episodes so far is remarkable.
Should SW continue, it really does need big cast makeover. Should SW end here, then I doff my cap to one and all. The trick is knowing when to hold 'em and know when to fold 'em.
S28 made me feel folding needs to be given some serious consideration......tough as that would be on this season's new cast members who haven't let the side down.
It's all feels just a wee bit tired. Perhaps a hiatus and re-boot would be a good move at this point in time.

This is NOT a history lesson, but this IS entertainment, and maybe much more importantly, this IS a bit of an education.
These guys were not DC or MARVEL characters. Stan Lee played no part in their creation. Set aside the adornments required for a high quality TV drama, and you are left with the core (or should that be corps) of men with a set of qualities (or flaws if you will), that I could never match......even in my wildest dreams. They were a very different breed who both took and saved an awful lot of lives. Did they lose their essential humanity? Both S1 and S2 touches on the subject matter, but doesn't seek to provide the answers. I doubt that many of us should ever dare to judge them.
A bunch of misfits that gave so much. I actually think that Churchill's famous "so much owed by so many to so few" could be extended to include Stirling, Mayne et al.
A fabulous two series that has left me hugely entertained and hugely humbled in equal measure. A joy from start to finish.
