A number of comments have been made about the film being a sub-par knock-off of an Ealing comedy, despite a promising cast list. I have to agree but what has been overlooked is that this is the first film concerned about environmental issues that I can think of. Rather surprising considering that the primary audience for this film had only shed their ration cards months earlier.
Apparently there was an awareness that an ever expanding economy could impinge too much on the natural surroundings and people felt well off enough to forgo some of the advantages of progress. Maybe the writers and producers of films were better off than most so it is not surprising that they would be at this level of awareness in 1954 but for most of the paying filmgoers things were still a bit tight.

Oh, dear such a low scoring rating, which is a bit unfair as the rating is given by adults for a mid-teenage film. For today's viewers it is more of a curiosity piece but it really did reflect how a significant number of people felt at the time. It was aimed at teenagers as they were settling on their religious beliefs as a choice and not as a given.
It is good see some familiar faces popping up and they must have given their time for minimal rates as they were doing it for something they believed in. Thora Hird in particular went onto do years of religious based programmes, whether comedic or serious, and her genuine interest stood her in good stead.

I keep seeing assertions that this was never shown in the UK until....(30 years after it was made?) but I have memories of seeing it a couple of times in the 60s. Freddie Frinton may not have been an A+ star but due to "Meet the Wife" and other appearances he was a well known face and it was a memorable performance.
Maybe it was used as a cheap time filler in a provincial area (Scotland in my case) and was not recorded as being broadcast by the London based TV companies. Does anyone else have memories or records to back me up? Freddie Frinton often played "under the influence" in his stand-up performances and had honed it well over the years so it is not surprising that this performance stands out in peoples minds.
