I had a good time watching this. Many scenes were incredibly funny and the action was well-rounded and original. If I had one gripe I'd be with the cheesy anime-esque oneliners taking away from the main actress' performance. For I believe she did a really good job at giving a much-needed emotional counterweight in a genre that's, frankly, dominated by testosterone and silly male power fantasies. Mainly thanks to this the film exceeds expectations, as an interesting take on male-female dynamics in a society where there is much to gain on this front, namely Japan.
It ends up being part feminine power fantasy, part silly drama and part comedic ingenuity in a roughly coherent (albeit plotless) vision of redemption for the sins of toxic masculinity. All in all a recommended flick for lovers of genre films.

You have the kind of movies that leave you flabbergasted, totally overwhelmed and satisfied after seeing it. You also have the kind of movies after which you want to leave as soon as possible to get a drink. This movie was of the last type.
I started watching this movie with no big expectations, just a nice flick to spend the evening with. Who can remember the Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within movie? That's what i expected. The good points about this movie are that the special effects are great, they certainly managed to bring CGI-movies to another level (again). Also the action is magnificent (though maybe a bit too Manga-ish) and to see Sephiroth on the big screen totally blew me away. But the fact that the CGI is the strongest point is also the weakest point, because who will remember this movie after ten years? The fan boys maybe, but they are only a small percentage. And of course you also have the people who never heard of Final Fantasy at all and who are going to not understand a single bit of the whole story. I recommend this to all fans of FF7, Japanese anime fans and strange action flick lovers. For all you people out there who don't know Final Fantasy 7 or like funny, deep or realistic movies, don't waste your money.

wow. that was the first word to come out of my mouth when the movie was finished. I saw the movie on my school, where it got a standing ovation. The characters left an impact on me that will always have a special place in my mind (read: haunt it) and i dare to say that the Phantom is one of the coolest bad guys ever. The sets and costumes are of a quality never seen before, Lord of the Rings has met its match. The actors are talented and i can't wait to see more of them. Everything about this movie is just...perfect. Usually there are a lot of things in movies that annoy me, but this time i was so sucked up in the movie i noticed nothing. I must say, i don't like "musical-movies". But the songs in this movie are like the story itself, and if the story moves you, there is no doubt about it that you will like the songs too. So while i was watching this movie the story got hold of me and the songs had a much, much greater impact than they would normally have. Whether this is because of the great acting, the story itself or the absolute greatness of the world Joel Schumacher and Andrew Loyd Webber and their companions created, i cannot say. What i can say is: Watch this movie! And do it with an open mind, even if you don't like Opera/musicals/movies with those things as a subject. You'll never forget it.
