Totally wow, this is a fantastic show. People leaving negative reviews seem a bit harsh - these artists are under pressure to create a profitable item in a limited timeframe with stuff rescued from the tip. I rate that degree of difficulty as very high. Casting judgement and putting down the artistry ignores how much tastes vary. Mostly I find they make something absolutely divine and ingenious. I think all the cast are absolutely amazing with the things they come up with to transform a piece of junk into something that will sell for a profit. Amazing skills and creativity - some combine woodwork, upholstery, paining and even sewing. Others like Bex and her husband Dave are welders, blacksmiths, painters and woodworkers. What an awesome array of skills!
At last!! A movie about the Dahomeans. Fed up to the gills with pot boiler white white white male male male contrived cardboard bravery and predictable plots that have almost zero resemblance to my experience. History and my own experience distorts the world as predominantly white with the winners too good to be true heroes. Just where are real people with the integrity and decency of this vast army of white male heroes? Viola Davis's fiery genius was perfect for the starring role. What a movie she made - warts and all, enslave rather than be enslaved, kill rather than be killed. Enthralling snapshot of women's bravery embedded in humanity's rather sordid track record. When the final movie credits came up, I was irritated, thinking but it only ran for 15 minutes. Checked the time length and the movie was over two hours. BRAVO!!! Superb script, acting, dialogue, scenery - nothing beats storylines and characters based on real events. But will the investigation into the whiteness of the 2023 Oscars have some teeth? I'm no expert on Dahomean history and I expect that Davis's protrayal as the flawed hero may have some poetic licence but I don't care. Why are so many people shooting the movie down for inaccuracy in a sea of historical recreations of white male gladiators, wars etcetera that are predictable pot boilers with heroes that are too good to be true? Davis's brave warrior had powerful but warty depth. The storyline showed humanity without a whitewash.
Love this show - quite addictive. Acting and dialogue are sensational. Lots of cliffhangers and the settings in Mexico and the US are visually excellent. Love the way interior designs match the characters - the flashy villain Mateo has kitsch nouveau riche Mex; the crusading lawyer Victoria's home is tastefully Vogue Living Mex; conservative Salas is tastefulyl understated; the tenement where Deivid, Diego, Gabby & Chucho live in Series 1 is tasteful shabby chic Mex, showing a meticulous eye to adding character depth to the settings.
