I remember seeing this TV film when it was first broadcast. I can't believe Morecambe and Wise finished up making this nonsense. They were lumbered with average material, as were the supporting cast. The story is about as clichéd as it gets: the gathering of a family for the reading of a will at a large country house. There's murder afoot, along with secret passages, a master of disguise, foggy nights and family skeletons. It's clearly a pastiche of traditional crime fiction. Authors like Agatha Christie and Edgar Wallace spring to mind - except they made the above clichés entertaining and thrilling. Eric Morecambe does not look well but he's a real trooper.
The humour of Wheeler and Woolsey takes some getting used to. As a comedy team, they are like the proverbial marmite: you either love them or loathe them. I'm split between the two. "Hold 'Em Jail" has a few mildly amusing moments and it's good to see comic Edgar Kennedy. He plays the decidedly cantankerous prison warden, which makes him a sympathetic character when you think about it. Wheeler and Woolsey are sentenced to his prison, where they undermine Kennedy's authority, cause general chaos and somehow are made trustees. I'm glad the film is brief. 60 to 75 minutes goes a long way with this particular comedy team! The climactic football scene is quite a lively affair, featuring some impressive stuntwork. From the same year, "Horse Feathers" with the Marx Brothers also featured a football sequence for their climax. It is far superior to that of "Hold 'Em Jail." Another plus for the film, is the absence of any musical interludes.
It's got to be said that Wheeler and Woolsey are an acquired taste! Popular during the 30s, their brand of humour hasn't dated very well. I can see the camaraderie between the team but they aren't necessarily likeable. "The Nitwits" film is a typical example of this. The story is occasionally enlivened by a few good gags, effective cinematography and a fast-moving climax where everything is used - including the kitchen sink, literally! Murder is afoot and our hapless heroes are unwittingly caught up in it - naturally. But the slow pace, lack of background music and the film being restricted to a few sets are considerable handicaps. A running time of 81 minutes is too long for me. 60 to 65 minutes is plenty.
