The Brits know know how to write great scripts and make amazing down to earth, real and raw movies.
LAYLA is a stunning, beautiful and sensitive portrait of a gay man who likes to perform in outrageous drag and happens to come from a Muslim family from Palestine. He is not out to his religious family and stays with a wonderfully supportive small community of other queer people. He then meets his match in a guy his age and it all feels so easy and fun until Layla realizes that his free life comes with a price and he does not want to give up that amazing freedom. This movie and its cast is just absolutely amazing and it is so refreshing to watch a gay movie that stays away from silly stereotypes like most American gay movies cant get away from.

The most beautiful and spiritual animation ever made, with only a few animals including a cat, who are not speaking with silly human voices but rather given their natural sounds. It's about friendship, the balance between independence and relying on others, and, as the title suggests, going with the flow and not forcing yourself upon the world; it touches on our interactions with nature. So very relevant and deeply touching but also funny and beautiful at the same time! Do yourself a favor and watch this 'silent', peaceful, magical, mind blowing and epic journey! It made me cry most of the movie!
This movie by Steve McQueen is a masterpiece about Hitler's insane bombing campaign on the UK and especially shows the destruction of London. The main characters are a mother and her mixed race son as she has to send him off during a mass childrens evacuation and then he tries his way back to find her. The portrayal of this beautiful mother-son relationship is overshadowed by the sheer insanity of the destructive human race. Steve McQueen shows in one particular scene what BLITZ s all about: whilst Hitler's racist madness is unleashing the most horrendous war onto the world, the broken people of London set up camp in the tube stations and there the little black boy witnesses racism for the first time in his life.
Bravo to Saoirse Ronan and Elliott Heffernan in his first role! Both deserve an Oscar for their roles. Steve McQueen deserve one for best director!
