This is what a Christmas special is supposed to be. I feel like Moffat gave us the episode we needed, nothing too overcomplicated or mind-bending, just a really enjoyable hour. It will still be fun for people who aren't caught up, because it's a standalone story. It actually made me cry, because I am alone on Christmas day and only got to see my family over Zoom. You'll see why that's relevant when you watch the episode. I've always loved the one-off companions like Kylie Minogue's character in Voyage of the Damned, and this episode lived up to that. Nicola Coughlin brings this really genuine energy to every role she plays. We don't actually know much about Joy, and that could have led to a one-dimensional character, but she had depth. The actress who played Anita also did a really fantastic job, and for me she was a highlight of the episode. This episode really did bring me joy for what it was, a simple and fun Christmas special.
Oh my god, this show. I watched the whole thing in two nights and I am still processing. WOW. I highly highly highly recommend this. It's definitely heavy. The whole time I was reminding myself that things like this really happen, abducted women do have kids in captivity. Those poor kids. Both actors were so convincing as children with that kind of isolated upbringing. The actress who plays Hannah is masterful. There's so much depth there, even though the character isn't outwardly emotive. She has a really haunting vibe, and especially after some of those scenes, I feel like I'm being watched. It's hard to even describe how I feel after that. I will still be thinking about this show for a while. There's something different about the German shows I've seen (besides the language obviously) that hit so different from your British and American detective dramas.
I didn't think I would like this show at all, but I'm really enjoying it. Don't let the negative reviews deter you, try it out and form your own opinion. It's one of those shows that you don't need to take super seriously, it's just a chill and fun watch. If you liked Psych or Pokerface, you'll like this. Morgan reminds me a lot of Shawn from Psych, in that she's keenly observant but chaotic, and does the detectives job better than they do. A lot of her "aha" moments remind me of Psych as well. The supporting characters are mostly likeable, though Karadec can be annoying. Morgan can definitely be annoying too, which I could see being a turnoff for some people. But she clearly has a big heart, and cares a great deal about justice. Some of the crimes and solves are definitely improbable, but it's fiction. I think people need to lighten up in their criticism of comedies, because at the end of the day this has been an enjoyable watch.
