  • The antithesis of what Asimov wanted to say

Please don't interpret my one-star review as criticism of reimagined characters, genders, ethnicities, or new storylines not found in the original books.

Nor is it because I'm a purist who insists on adaptations being exact replicas of their source material. That's not the issue here. I'm also not objecting simply because I've read the books and found them to be fascinating, innovative, and deeply relevant.

My dissatisfaction with this series has nothing to do with deviations from the narrative I once enjoyed. The problem is more fundamental.

Asimov's Foundation was built on a single, elegant premise-one that's both timeless and crucial in our hyper-individualistic era. Asimov envisioned a world where humanity's collective fate was driven by patterns larger than any one individual. He challenged the notion that we are each the sole protagonist in our personal drama, believing instead that, like ants or bees, humans function within a broader system that determines our trajectory. While individuals might differ up close, humanity behaves predictably when observed from a distance.

Asimov argued that societal progress depends not on the will of singular heroes but on the coordinated interplay of many people, each contributing in their own way for the greater good. The Foundation, in his books, is not a collection of powerful saviors but a coalition of scientists and sociologists who understand that only through rational thinking, logic, and science can society survive and avert catastrophe. His contrast was the Empire-a society driven by the mythic, individualistic ego of the powerful, one that holds itself above the collective good.

In Asimov's world, no one character is central to the outcome. The protagonists die, often of old age, understanding that they've done a small part to nudge humanity toward a better future. They recognize they are just cogs in a much larger machine, and that the collective effort is what ultimately defines success.

But in the TV adaptation, the focus shifts dramatically. The story now hinges on young, magical, psychic individuals who are so pivotal to society's survival that the narrative bends over decades to accommodate them. It's the cult of the individual-the exact antithesis of Asimov's message. Instead of showing how society advances through the subtle interplay of many, we're given a hero's journey narrative, suggesting that salvation comes from a few uniquely gifted individuals.

What's more, the series misses Asimov's critique of religion as a tool for control, a major thematic element in the books. It's a crucial piece of his message that is largely ignored in favor of a more fantastical, action-driven plot.

That's why I gave it one star. The show has twisted Asimov's nuanced exploration of collectivism and rationality into the very thing he warned against: a glorification of ego and the belief in singular saviors. This shift in narrative focus is troubling, especially given the times we're living in. Populism and far-right ideologies are resurging. Book burnings are happening again. We're on the brink of our own societal crisis-one that, like Asimov's world, demands a collective and rational response. And yet, here we have a series that chooses to celebrate the very ethos that's driving us to the edge.

Asimov's legacy was about humility before the greater good, about seeing beyond the self to the whole. Unfortunately, this adaptation has lost sight of that, turning a profound meditation on society into yet another tale of egotism and hero worship.

  • A golden sun flared look at the world of beauty

A series about a fashion magazine is not something I would normally think I'd like but 'made in Italy' is so much more than I was expecting. It's a glorious and beautifully shot portrait of the role of Italian fashion as a reflection of society, casting it's lead characters as innocent pursuers of modern beauty. The show highlights the changeable dynamics of 1970s politics, makes you fall in love with Milanese architecture but above all, it's a heart-warming ode to friendship in a rapidly changing world. An antidote for today's crazy times...its like a dream of golden sun and corderoy. 😜Everyone's supremely likeable and sickening skinny. Love it and can't wait for the second series.
