There is a glut of horror films out there right now. Most are remakes or rehashes aimed at getting teenagers cash. The Off Season is a refreshing break from this trend, smartly written and with real characters.
The horror here works on two levels: First there are some classic "scares". I saw this as part of a Halloween double feature with 'Phantasm' (which also features Angus Scrimm who was in attendance that night). Despite the film's understated tone and presentation, even the most desensitized horror fans were leaping out of their seats on several occasions.
Secondly, the film looks at the fear that we, as social creatures, have of being alone in a strange place.
The humor that was present in the director's first film, Canniballistic, is here as well. But there is also a great deal of sadness, thanks to some excellent writing and an amazing performance by the film's leading lady, Christina Campenella.
The Of Season isn't just a wonderful horror movie, but and excellent drama, and sometimes comedy, as well.

I am one of the world's biggest fans of the original Phantasm. But I have to admit, that the sequels really do nothing for me.
Number four is the closest thing to the original. It lives the same world, but isn't distracted by pop culture phenomena of the time the way 2 & 3 seemed to be influenced/commentating on 'Evil Dead' and 'Home Alone'.
As much as I like seeing the Tall Man, Reggie and Mike back in action, Jody still seems forced into the series. I really wish that Coscarelli had just left him dead and moved on. The whole 'living ball' thing is plain silly.

If you've seen 'Colonial House' on PBS, you may be surprised to see Freeman Don Wood here as the main protagonist, the one who dines on human flesh. Fans of the British TV series 'Doctor Who' will also get a treat in the form of that show's 'Sgt. Benton' as a television self help guru.
No, this isn't 'Cannibal Ferox' or 'Cannibal Holocaust'. So if you're looking for that sort of thing, this will not be for you. If you are a fan of the delightfully dark film 'Parents' or like your John Waters with a touch of HG Lewis, then Canniballistic may be just what you are looking for.
