Elkhorn gets 4 stars for the scenery. As for the actors, none of whom I'll admit I ever heard of, they all seem more suited to community theater than television series or movies. I've watched four episodes and the more I see, the less I like it. The actor playing Paddock, I think his first name is Nate, may be the most annoying of the bunch. I refuse to believe he actually sounds like that! It feels like he made a conscious decision to sound and look like some new version of Sam Elliott! Every time he smirks and starts speaking in that Sam Elliott drawl, I have to laugh. Not sure I can finish watching the entire series. Honestly, I'd rather watch reruns of the old T. V. westerns from the 1960's. If you want to see a new Western series with great acting and writing, you should watch 'Billy the Kid' on MGM+ It's a hundred times better than Elkhorn.
For the most part, I am a fan of this series. Charlie Eppes ENORMOUS ego not withstanding, most episodes are enjoyable on a purely 'don't expect Shakespeare' basis. Is it plausible? Probably not. Is it entertaining? Mostly. I particularly like the Eppes family dynamic and the addition of Larry to the mix is always fun to watch....at least for me. Anyway, the best part of this episode came at the very end when Charlie and Alan opted to stay up with Don and watch some late night TV to support him after his breakup with Robin. As Charlie goes to pop the popcorn, Alan turns on the TV saying late night is when they usually show the classics.....and the theme from 'Taxi' is playing as we go to the credits. An homage to Judd Hirsch's 'classic' TV series.....Taxi. I love it!
If I had paid for a ticket to see this movie I would have asked for my money back. As it is, I can only hurl expletives at TCM for wasting 2 hours of my life watching this stupid farce. It's hard to believe Cary Grant, Deborah Kerr, Robert Mitchum and Jean Simmons could ALL be so horribly miscast. The ONLY enjoyment I derived from the film were the scenes the butler, whose name escapes me, was in. He was a pleasant respite from the tedious and irritating characters around him. Not only was the whole premise of the film a bad idea, but the actors all seemed to know it and their performances all made their respective characters unlikable. I will cut Jean Simmons a little slack because she played the least objectionable of the main characters. Anyway, I will certainly NEVER watch this movie again.
