This movie begins very slow with little indication that it is going to pack a serious punch at the close. We doubt very many people under 30 or even 40 years of age will be able to appreciate the story. One must care about those who fought in WW2 and care that they did and why they did. But the generations that fought are very few any more. The grandchildren and great grandchildren of WW2 veterans barely know what the war was about, why we as a country or any country of the Allies were in the war. It is a war story not so much if at all, about countries and armies but one of individual and personal sacrifice. Do not let anyone tell you what it is really about if you want to truly experience empathy for Artie. If you want to eventually understand why Artie did what he did you must let the characters tell the story through their acting.
Production value is excellent without having to go to extreme level other than the superb make up of Pierce Brosnan who plays the role of 96 year old Artie. The movie is, I found, very enjoyable and satisfying. And I avoid war movies unless the "based on true life story" is true indeed.
Supposedly it is the same story as The Great Escaper although a few significant differences i have not seen The Great Escaper with Michael Caine it is strange that both movies are based on the same original material.

I first watched this movie in the theatre when it was released. Since then I've rewatched several times and the movie has never lost its impact on our fright quotient. Each time, it works effectively to drive tensions sky high. Well cast with some of the best ever actors Audrey Hepburn excels at becoming the character so convincing we believe it is real. Well written story which does not need to resort to unbelievable horror scenarios to frighten. The viewer smoothly begins to identify with the challenge of blindness. This movie rarely, if ever, shows up on Best Movie lists, but it does belong high in the list.
