A shocking testament that filmmaking is more art than science. Sure, it's the same movie as the original but with some heavy handed and downright awful changes. Adding pointless characters, utterly terrible new dialogue, and, even worse, new beats in between moments. Taking any charm the original had and completely destroying it. Any humor is crushed by mistimed punchlines. Punchlines that come after extra dialogue or added beats making the moment fall completely flat. The memorable moments and dialogue you could feel the audience anticipating landing like a dead fish.

If this lifeless, hollow "remake" wasn't bad enough it has the audacity to strip out key set ups that it foolishly still tries to pay off. The "not so fireproof on the inside" set up is completely gone, making for a bizarre climax where all the same dialogue about waiting for the perfect shot remains. But why wait? In this version we have no idea you can shot a fireball into a dragons throat and explode them. Sure, you can assume it, but then why keep the moment the same? It robs the audience of the satisfying moment of recall.

Yes, the original is dated at this point, but it's also over a decade old now. This trashy live action adaptation came out 20 minutes ago and already looks, feels, sounds, and plays much worse. Music still bangs though.

The problem with this mushy, over ripe, often stale pregnancy comedy isn't the onslaught of suburb leveling, ear splitting "humor" or the insufferably blue collar approach to the filmmaking. No, the worst part of this is that it takes a potentially awesome premise and does so little with it, moms everywhere should feel insulted. It carries on with this "they didn't teach THIS in school" attitude that feels incredibly misguided when the new single mom to-be can casually buy $500 sushi that doesn't even go to the desired person. It's gross and stupidly low effort for a movie that will absolutely have an audience that says, "men can't have opinions about this one."

NRSA as I would like to call it is a strong feature. Showcasing excellent performances from the leads, a grounded narrative, and some legitimately earned emotional moments. The bond between the two is quite strong. Helping each other or just being there when there were having issues was always lovely to see. My problem isn't with any of that or even that I was sometimes disinterested. I found it oddly hollow in terms of thematics or even things to chew on. It hints at some undercurrents but rarely explores them and when it ended, that was it for me. Didn't leave me wanting more or dwelling in it's message or even questioning anything. I like it overall it just didn't do much for me. I can't say I'll never think of it but there wasn't much of an impression made.
