  • Great Movie Except For...

I like everything about this movie except for Danny DeVito's self-written role. It's like your watching this great historically accurate movie and then all-of-a-sudden it cuts to a scene of DeVito getting laid by some beautiful woman. I mean how does that even fit into the story, except to boost DeVito's ego? I don't know about you, but I don't want to see DeVito's promiscuous fantasies being acted out in an otherwise good movie just because he has the ability to write his own part. If you're gonna be writing the script for your own character and the greatest thing you can think of is gratuitously getting your character laid by lots of different women throughout the movie? Uugggh- gross! Am I the only one that was bothered by this? Is there some historical reason that his character was actually based on a person who needed to be portrayed in that way?

  • One of My Favorite Movies of All Time!!

Freeway and Freeway 2 are my all-time favorite movies!! I'll admit Freeway was more mainstream with very little sex and violence, and Reese Witherspoon is stunning and superb as Vanessa, but Freeway 2 breaks ALL the rules!! I've watched it several times and have it on VHS. This movie's got it all: girls in prison, bad girls gone badder, lesbianism, miscegeny, menstruation, childhood sexual abuse, bulimia, female serial killers, necrophilia, incest, hypocrisy in religion, radical feminism, chicks who pose as hookers to beat up and rob male tricks, manifestations of sexism and racism (in a very satirical way). The best part is that these things are all represented in an in-your-face matter-of-fact way. Its no sappy, emo-drama, Lifetime "channel for women" type of deal. This movie ROCKS! O, and there is some male frontal nudity at the end. I wonder, is that REALLY Vincent Gallo in that scene or just a prop??

  • I've seen the movie AND read the book

This movie is a disturbing look at the realities of the antebellum South. And yes, I do believe the depictions and events in this movie are realistic. Such atrocities are well-documented. Both the movie and the book contain graphic violence, sex, and rape. The movie is sometimes difficult to watch, but it's worth watching, for anyone who ponders the evils of humanity and especially the history of the U.S. during the 1800's. The acting and film quality aren't upper echelon. The dialogue is sometimes excessively histrionic. But that's not what's so good about this movie. It's gritty, realistic, and brutally honest.

As I watched, I realized that maybe things haven't changed so much since those times. Racism and sexism are still very much alive. You can easily compare the attitudes and behaviors depicted in this film with things that go on in our society today. Some people have commented that Blanche was "oversexed". I find that a rather hilarious statement. They obviously don't get the feminist subplot of this movie. The way it depicts and breaks down racism and sexism and shows exactly why they're faulted ideologies is why I love this movie so much!
