I have mixed feelings about this movie/episode. I like certain parts because of camera angles or music or dialogue. But at times Solo and Illya seem like background characters, even at their own intended execution. They are passive, and have no dialogue then. I get the impression that the movie is more about the guest stars than the series stars.
The handheld camera work can be annoying at times. It makes scenes look rushed, as if they didn't have time to do it properly.
The music is memorable but some scenes repeat it to the point of distraction.
Leslie Nielsen is quite good as the general. You'd never know he would later make his mark as a comedy actor.

First off, I've watched "Battle Royale" (after seeing/reading the "Hunger Games") and I loved it. But saying HG's a rip-off is grossly unfair. I personally have written a short novel and was shocked to find some of my story points in two other movies that I had never heard of before. All of this happened in 2008. It's like ideas are tossed into the ether and fall into various writers' heads.
Back in the early 1970s, two books were published simultaneously about fires in skyscrapers. One was "The Tower" and the other was "The Glass Inferno". They were so similar that Irwin Allen bought the rights to both books and called his movie "The Towering Inferno".
As for this movie, I enjoyed it quite a bit but was left disappointed by a few elements. The first one was Katniss' reaction after the name being called during the Reaping. In the book it was very vividly written. I could almost bodily feel what she was describing. Yet the movie doesn't carry the same impact in that scene.
I also felt the Katniss portrayal was a bit light on emotion. Yes, her character is supposed to be introverted (unlike Peeta) but her personality feels dampened to the point of being wooden at times.
A disadvantage of the movie is that much of Katniss' inner dialogue is missing. It's a big part of the book because it shows her thought processes. But the only way to add this to a movie is with the dreaded voiceover.
Jennifer Lawrence may not look underfed, as in the book, but she does a great job. She fits the role perfectly.
Side note: I get the impression that LionsGate didn't know they had a blockbuster on their hands. The director did a good job but only had two previous credits. The movie looks like they did some parts on the cheap. But that may have worked in its favor, by focusing on the story instead of special effects.
