Let me start with Cinematography, it has all the recipe of Hombale films. The producers of Kaantara!!
The treasure hunt kind of a story with some supernatural healing element is fine but the non linear presentation across three time periods doesn't stick well. Tovino Thomas does justice on part but the plot does not draw that stickiness which a Kaantara or a Baahibali does!
Music some times is sometimes superfluous or overwhelming.
The story line is all about lineage and legacy, and says how the protoganist negotiates his way forward to erase the untrue legacy. Basically the protoganist trio are ready to face all odds for greater good. While that theme is good it needs a proper presentation.
Kalari was shown well initially, even during the climax it's brought in and presented well, initially but loses steam almost instantly.
We are left to wonder what is it that the hero will use to win all the odds against him. It's finally the supernatural saving element in the plot that makes the entire much a do about something into some what nothing.
Needn't have to be that lengthy a movie to say what you wanted to say!! Though there are a couple of twists in the movie they don't appeal much.
Overall you can watch once with some supernatural support for almost 3 hours.

Vaazhai: Movie Review by Rajesh Puvvada
Hot food served on a plantain leaf evokes all culinary indulgences at one go. After watching this movie those fresh thoughts will remain washed out for ever!!
Mari Selavaraj's fourth instalment of movies with strong social imbalance theme knocks a notch higher on your emotional senses and leaves you with a thought provoking dilemma. Pari Yerum Perumal, Karnan, Manannan and now Vaazhai have a strong message. The only difference is Vaazhai ends in inexplicable pathos as against the earlier instalments.
The pace of the movie is slow and spins around a few places and characters over a strong story. Every word said by every character will make you think about the strength of the plot. The slow pace reflects the life and times in that context.
The plot sets you up very well for an unexpected twist in the very end. Twice or thrice we are set up to walk into the unexpected. That way I appreciate the genius in the story telling.
In a very strong pathos, a mild comedy can be very strong. You know the comedy is a little outdated but you will still enjoy it as a relief to the pain the movie traverses.
We always have close friends who will always enjoy to see you get stuck in a funny controversy. And they will lead you into it. And those become a memory that will bring tranches of nostalgia for the future. In this movie the protagonist is a very young boy who has a soulmate of a friend who remains his alter ego till the end. Always trying to tickle the sensual aspects of childhood, the friend does it for one last time in the very end. This his provocation saves the life of the protagonist.
I am a fan of the musical genius of Santosh Narayanan's score. He goes one level up in his offering. Scoring for pathos in a socially imbalanced setting will have some regional and ritualistic themes which he has handled very well. Dhee's fits this theme quite well, and delivers a foot tapping number in a sombre setting.
The presentation and cinematography happens to be a brilliant outcome. Unwrapping slowly layer by layer with metaphors. In the very end portrayal of cranes is a brilliant metaphor for establishing balance at the moment of tragedy. Not sure how many will get that piece of art work. Strong parts of emotional feelings are delivered in monochrome. Thus giving a special touch to the feelings the movie evokes
Very strong performances by every artist. Not one artist in this movie fits the popularity list. Many new faces in a close to reality setting. The movie retains its identity as a close to reality till the very end. One can only offer such strong social themes only when experienced earlier. I am certain Mari Selvaraj's portrayal in his installments come from his deep layered socially stigmatic experiences within.
Fresh and balanced on the outlook, deeply flawed and fragile social imbalance put forth with sheer brilliance.
If you are a movie goer for entertainment you can't appreciate this brilliant work. In my view this work qualifies for many national and international accreditations!!
Unlike the earlier instalments of Mari Selavaraj, no canine character is tragically lost!!
I am going with a 9.5/10. Will watch again to pick up some nuances, this time in OTT, whenever it shows up!!

_A review by Rajesh Puvvada_
If I recollect right, this is the first Malayalam movie I went and watched in a movie theatre after the first 3D movie "My Dear Kutti Chattan " in 1984. All this while I catch upon good Malayalam movies in OTT. So this is a very unique experience for me to watch a Malayalam movie in theatre at Pune. I was influenced by friends who gave me a very positive feedback.
What makes the story telling compelling?!?! A story can be told in various ways, it can be told straight forward to the point or it can be told with a lot of creative presentations within. That creative presentation to bring the edge of a seat thriller experience is one of the key ingredients of Manjammel Boys.
A group of friends who are in their youthful prime, with a lot of blood rush usually do a lot of mischief. And so were the Manjammel Boys. But there is one thing unique about their bonding. Bonding among friends won't happen overnight. The power of bonding is that one will do anything to cover one's back. When I say anything it's everything under the sun. For that kind of a bonding to happen, there has to be years and years of friendship among them and over the years they have many stories to tell you. And that's what Director Chidambaram prepares you for. If one friend is ready to take a huge risk to save an other, it is backed by years and years of true bonding and friendship!! I really liked the way Chidambaram handled it!!
The movie starts with credits to Ilayaraja and Kamal Hassan. And now I am convinced why they gave the credit to both of them. If you had watched the early 90s movie Guna, a song would have remained stuck in your head after you watched that movie. That very same song forms the essence for the unexpected things that will unfold!!
Indian audiences always want a hero who is stylish, well built and good looking!! Well if you have a story to tell with a solid presentation then looks go unnoticeable. Soubhin Sahir does one performance with his natural looks, receding hairline, short and not so well built body as Kuttan in this movie which is exemplary!!
Every character does their part to fit well into the plot. If you consider the police men in the movie as villains for their tough and corrupt ways of working well you will hate those characters in this movie. And that's exactly how the director wants you to feel!!
The movie grips you well within its grasp and you will enjoy that tightness. This is one such movie that you want to ensure a safe ending but things go back and forth like a "Tug of War"
The "Tug of War" is by far the real saviour in this movie. Wondering why?!? Watch it with your family!! There are a lot of leadership lessons here. So make sure you watch with your office team if it matters to you!!
I am going with a 9/10 and I am humming "Kanmani Anbodu Kadhalan...." song while I complete this review. A lengthy one. You need a long and lengthy rope to bring someone back from an abyss!!
