I am sure hilarity was not the goal of the producers, the actors or the writers of this terribly funny series.
The plot, the dialogue, the circumstances are all over the top and exaggerated. But the cinematography and the set designs are sexy eye candy. The actual sex? Not so sexy. Just funny and campy.
I read the book back in the 90s as well as saw the original movie based on the book. Both were thrilling, interesting, and mysterious. I would say this version is none of those things.
It's one of those shows that I can have playing in the background when I am working or cooking and can ignore or watch momentarily for a good laugh. Thanks Netflix!

This really isn't a mystery. It is more of a portrait of two people and the messed up games they play. It's so much better than gone girl. I can't believe that movie rated so much higher than this one. This one is much more realistic and interesting.
I have been wanting to watch this movie for quite some time but had been waiting to read the book first . This evening I noticed that the movie was available on Prime and decided to go ahead and watch it. I wasn't sure if I was going to like it so I paused the movie and read the synopsis on Wikipedia. On that same page it also described the bad reviews and weak box office the movie generated. But based on the synopsis, even with the spoilers, I decided to watch the movie and was not disappointed. There are a lot of time jumps and intercut memories, but they were all done very well. I think anyone could watch this movie without referring to the Wikipedia page first. All of the acting was top notch and the visuals and sets exemplary of the money that was spent making this movie. It's unfortunate that this movie did not do well in theaters as it is definitely worth seeing and stands on its own. And I am more motivated to read the book now.
