The Norwegian critics haven't been too kind to this movie, but it is much better than the critics would have you believe. It was a fascinating and thoroughly interesting film, about a great man who lived a highly prominent life. I liked the scope, and that they focused not only on one major achievement, but gave time to all of Amundsen's accomplishments. It reminded me a bit of Richard Attenborough's Chaplin (1992) starring Robert Downey Jr. in the way it was told, and I liked that it was done in this way.

Pål Sverre Hagen was great in the lead role. The film rests on his shoulders and he was impressive. He captured the weight of the character, and was particularly successful in portraying Amundsen as a middle aged man. He was totally believable. I don't normally gush about Norwegian actor's, like most I tend to focus on the American and British actors, but Pål was a real star in this film. He captured a lot just with glances, without even speaking.

As perfect as most of Amundsen's achievements were, this film showed that a great man has to be ruthless at times to bring about such success. That single focus to succeed and relentless pursuit, was captured well in the film.

I will also applaud the director for not spoon feeding the audience. He didn't spell everything out, and he trusted the audience to be active participants in the telling of this story.

When you get that "natural high" feeling after watching a film, you know you've watched something good.

Not often do I feel compelled to write a review on IMDb, but after watching this documentary I just felt that it was crucial to spread the word. If you are a movie lover, you will adore this documentary.

As a movie fan, you will know the pleasures of discovering hidden gems amongst older movies. Viewing a documentary that celebrates such a hidden gem (They All Laughed - 1981), is really invigorating, and a good concept. That the film being lauded happens to be a Peter Bogdanovich film, makes it even more interesting, because of his famous career of peaks and valleys. Finding hidden gems in the valley of any director can often be the most interesting part. If a movie is very underrated, you want to scream about it from the rooftops - to recommend it to people. And that is one of the things that makes the creation of this doc so pleasing. It is shining a spotlight on a movie that never got it's proper due.

The documentary is never boring, and always entertaining. The interviews are uncommonly insightful and touching. I especially liked Quentin Tarantino's reflections on movie watching, and on Bogdanovich. I also appreciated Ben Gazzaras' honesty.

Some underrated movies are so good that you just have to make a documentary about them. I applaud the director (Bill Teck) for making a love letter to a movie - that deserves more recognition - and to a legendary director, who also deserves a documentary of this quality about himself. It's terrific.

This is a brilliant doc! Very captivating.

As I understand this "making of" has only been shown on TV (so far). I would guess a doc as good as this would warrant it's own release on DVD. If not that, it should at least be included in a future special edition of Heaven's Gate (which I'm sure we'll get someday).

All the interviews are very interesting. The stories that were told was funny, shocking, sad, mind-boggling, informative and captivating. It's funny that Willem Dafoe (who was fired from the set of heaven's gate, as an extra) is the narrator. He does a great job.

The craftsmanship that went into this making of is breathtaking. It's not often you see movie related documentaries done as well as this. Most of them are rush-jobs. This one was absorbing all the way through and is highly recommended to any movie fan interested in movie history.
