My Review - Harlots
My Rating - 9/10
Movies about the oldest profession in the world like Irma la Douce 1963, Walk on the Wild Side 1962 , Butterfield 8 1960 , Klute. 1972 , The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas 1983 and the Julie Walter's gem of 1987 Personal Services just to mention a few have always fascinated me because the characters are colourful and vulnerable plus the plots usually go to fascinating lengths.
Harlots is a brilliant 24 episode 2017, 2019 double series starring the sublime Lesley Manville whose inclusion in any series is reason enough for me to watch.
Set in 18th Century Dickensian London Lesley Manville plays Lydia Quigley the haughty madam of an "upper class" brothel . Lydia Quigley is ruthless and will stop at nothing including murder to stop any competition to house of ill repute.
The crux of this story involves the sleazy battle between two very different brothel madam's.
Lydia's girls are cultured and live in a grand house locked away from the outside world.
They speak French dress beautifully and their clientele are men from the finest families and highest institutions in London .
Lydia's competition is Margaret Wells , a lower class brothel owner played by Samantha Morton who also gives a wonderful performance .
Margaret Wells is equally ruthless in her ambition to move into Lydia Quigley's territory attempting to elevate her clientele and consolidate her two daughter's future prospects.
She is prepared to even auction daughters Lucy and Charlotte off to the highest bidder in an attempt to raise her social status.
Margaret's working girls are from the streets of London often homeless and desperate to survive the crime ridden underworld of the city.
There are so many interesting and colourful twists and turns in both series of Harlots .
The characters are diverse and well written giving a unique insight into 18th Century London often only briefly depicted in Dickensian style stories .
Harlots is being rediscovered on streaming as it didn't receive a lot of attention or critical acclaim when first released in 2017.
Its Steampunk style of musical score and fashion add to the very impressive ensemble cast and I'm pleased it's receiving more attention as it deserves to be seen.

I'm not sure why I get "hooked ", excuse the pun on stories about the oldest profession on Earth and the women who work in that profession.
Movies like Irma la Douce 1963, Walk on the Wild Side 1962 , Butterfield 8 1960 , Klute. 1972 , The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas 1983 and the Julie Walter's gem of 1987 Personal Services just to mention a few have always fascinated me because the characters are colourful and vulnerable plus the plots usually go to fascinating lengths.

My Review - Scrublands
Steaming on Stan
My Rating 8:10
Series One
I'm always pleased to see another quality Australian television series that introduces me to new upcoming actors I haven't seen before . Thankfully locally made series that highlight the quality of our script writers and film technicians are occurring more frequently.
Scrublands convincingly demonstrates that we can stand proud in the very competitive Cinema and Television World and often surpass some of the mediocre productions that are churned out like sausages from America.
Series one of Scrublands made in 2023 follows investigative journalist Martin Scarsden impressively played by Luke Arnold as he tries to uncover the truth in the case of the killing of five parishioners by a charismatic and dedicated young priest.
The Priest Father Byron Swift played by New Zealander Jay Ryan's motive for the shotgun killings is shrouded in mystery and follows accusations of criminal sexual abuse of the teenage boys in his care .
As the journalist opens up the towns old wounds after 12 months since the shootings he encounters resistance and cover ups that go very deep causing further investigation and some hostility.
I recommend both series one and the recent series 2 of Scrublands they are very different I did prefer the plot of Season One but really enjoyed both seasons.
I must make special mention about Bella Heathcote's very impressive performance as Mandy Bond who in Series 1 runs a book shop in the country town of Riversend . Mandy's bad impressions of the journalist Martin Scarsden eventually thaw and her romantic involvement with the journalist continues as they relocate in series 2 to Martin's hometown of Port Silver.
This coastal town is where investigative journalist Martin Scarsden returns to start a new life with his partner, Mandy Bond. However, his plans are disrupted when his childhood friend is found murdered, and Mandy becomes the prime suspect.
Well directed by Greg McLean and Ben Young both series of Scrublands based on a novels by Greg Hammer is entertaining and the cinematography are excellent.
Thanks Lindsay our Coles check out chick for recommending this entertaining series.
