Talk about a time waster! This vapid story of a former boxer turned speakeasy owner who wants to better himself and falls for an emotionally unstable gold-digger was one that should have gone the way of those cellulose nitrate films.

George Raft's performance was so wooden, half the time I thought it was a lookalike bot. If Constance Cummins has any acting talent at all, she sure hid it here! Even her temper tantrum destruction of her former bedroom fell flat, just like the rest of the story.

The other performers didn't give much of a performance either, including Wynne Gibson, as George's tough talking ex-girlfriend. Alison Skipworth was okay as his tutor/mentor, but I'm sure she's done better in more worthy roles.

The only thing worthwhile was seeing Mae West and hearing her give one of her classic lines: "Goodness had nothing to do with it". Other than that, this film can be easily skipped.

One thing you can say about this movie, is that it doesn't lack in acting talent! There are the great talents of Priscilla Lane, Fay Bainter, Mary Robson, Roland Young and Ian Hunter, and the lesser but still okay ones of Jeffrey Lynn and Genevieve Tobin, and they combine to keep the movie going, even when there isn't much going for it.

There are matters of trust, hypocrisy, rebellion, conformity, individual freedom, moral standards, outdated roles, etc., and had the story more depth, had gone for drama rather than comedy, it might have worked a lot better.

As it is, it's one of those movies that you can skip without many regrets.
