This is certainly an overblown film which threatens to overwhelm itself with sentiment. The flashback structure is less confusing, than needlessly wayward, compromising the narrative flow.
But it is notable for three particular sequences. First, the mutiny on the Ville de Nancy, and subsequent attack on it by the German airmen. Second, Claude Rains' reading of Bogie's letter to his son at the close of the film.
Thirdly, there is a surprising modern resonance, as the Bogart flashback (the famous flashback within a flashback within a flashback) shows the subversion of a democracy by a gangsterish set of goons. In a world where thugs have muscled their way into the governments of so many countries, and twisted their justice systems for their own ends, that flashback, which ends with Bogart's condemnation to Devil's Island, is well worth watching, rewatching and rewatching.
