Slow, empty, and thoughtless, it's difficult to wonder what some critics meant when they insisted that a movie with perhaps ten pages of dialogue is "thought provoking."
Simple thoughts, confused, banal, simple-minded nonsense? You're not leaving this film with a healthier mind. A dreadful, miserable, misanthropic, antisocial, crusty old hag is featured spreading her misery to everyone around her. She doesn't even have the redeeming quality of good humor in the process.
Historical mythology of witch burnings (4/year across the entire globe, making it one of the least common and least significant democidal and extrajudicial forms of barbarism) is featured as a sort of feminist paranoia clouding the visions of the writers.
They try unsuccessfully to capture the subtleties of Shyamalan, in what ultimately becomes a crime mystery turned cheesy karma flick. Incomplete threads that could have made an interesting plot are abandoned quickly, which may gratify only an audience with attention deficits.
The cinematography and foley were excellent which is worth at least two stars to barely redeem the terrible writing, directing, and concept.

A family of mentally ill, morally bankrupt imbeciles gets trapped in a room together during an ambiguous disaster. The authors confuse ambiguity for terror and fill in the blanks with vague pagan rituals and debauchery.
The only decent person in the movie is tormented and abused while his loser family behaves like inhumane freaks. You get to watch them bicker with each other for 90 min, with what few neurons they can muster and in the end they leave you wondering how you'll make up the time you just lost.
Do yourself a favor and take the low ratings seriously. This is one of the worst movies ever made. Any actor who read this script and agreed to sign on has no self-respect. I'd rather change my profession before working for this production.

Cox is incredible as usual in this realistic confrontation between a noble man of principle and wicked degenerates. The characters are believable and interesting, and the director doesn't dabble in superfluous flourishes. But they still created enough depth and intrigue to keep a strong viewer engagement. Score, foley, voice, and cinematography are all above average, and exceeding expectations for the film's budget.
