Where do I start? This was quite possibly the WORST war movie I have ever seen written by a screen writer with ZERO experience of military discipline and operations. The entire series was laughable.
1. a female soldier running around on the battlefield with socks and sandals - no boots on.
2. a sniveling kid that acts like a 14 year old working in the intelligence sector (often out of uniform). Sniveling kid allowed to keep a pet hedgehog on the front. Seriously!
3. zero military bearing among troops when talking to superior officers.
4. Multiple Israeli troops running out to rescue a radio during an artillery bombardment.
5. An Israeli troop who just cleared a minefield walks on the other side of a road only to step on a landmine. Any infantry troop knows roads are usually mined on both sides.
6. Constant soap opera drama between the troops that were more of a south American daytime tv novella than serious dialog.
7. troops allowed to bunch up with vehicles or together on foot on the front line - open invitation for a shelling or an attack.
8. troops allowed to come and go willy-nilly from home and to the front without passes and a retired former journalist/ entertainer allowed to jump into a tank and operate it.
9. obvious lack of training on equipment with the troops from loading shells, to operating tanks, to holding rifles and fire discipline when shooting.
10. Women, (in the early 1970s), allowed to be up front and close to battlefield operations, especially in the middle east, where women are commonly raped by enemy soldiers.
The entire show looked like a cub scout summer camp, not a military operation. If Israelis operated like this they would have most certainly had lost the war. Israeli has one of the most experienced and crack armies in the world out of existential necessity.
I almost stopped watching the series, but the tank battle scene in the end looked interesting and I was wondering how the director would screw this up too. While it wasn't good, it was passable.
Even the Syrians depicted in the show looked more disciplined than these clowns.
The characters were annoying, especially the snotty sniveling intelligence kid and the writing was all over the place. Overall it was a bad show and I really, really wanted to like it.

Normally Adam Sandler is a sophomoric goofball and I expect his movies to have that lowbrow type of comedy. This one was a serious drama which shows all the highlights of a severely flawed character - a gambling addict, a philanderer, and a swindler. While it does no justice to the stereotype of his race, it does portray a very realistic and believable character.... almost too real. The movie moved at a good pace, had a solid storyline, and was very realistic. It perhaps was the best performance I've ever seen of Sandler and I was quite impressed. The other characters in the film, the homeboys, the mobsters, and the family members were also realistic. Overall, a great film.
