This is a perfect movie. As a matter of fact, it was almost too perfect. The story (with minor exceptions) is true to the book. It is visually beautiful with good acting. It was like reliving the reading of the book, because it was so much like I imagined it. I can't believe it has the same rating as, say, the t.v. movie "Night Sins", which was a likeable piece of trash, but still trash.
This movie is loads of fun. Almost everyone in the town of Deer Run has a secret. As the Police Chief (with a past tragedy) and SBI Agent (Valerie Bertinelli) O'Malley investigate the kidnapping of a young boy they turn up the secrets of all the town's denizens. You meet a pedophile, closet homosexuals, a man having an affair with his neighbor, and even an evil chess club with a diabolical gamemaster. Even SBI Agent O'Malley has a secret. She fends off "migraines" with injections of a powerful drug. Every time we think we know who is bad, we learn that -- yes they are bad (and involved somehow in the abduction) -- but there is someone even worse waiting in the wings. This is trash, but high class trash. It may not be for members of the arty or experimental film crowd, but it has the most important element of any film. It's fun! As for a sequel -- bring it on!
Great fighting! Extremely funny! Michele Yoh's performance as a drunken and jilted woman was perfect. This is one of the best examples of the hell for leather fighting film punctuated with lots of laughs. All the tricky stunts looked real. There was some wire fu. The story is based on a legend and the setting is atmospheric. A classic and two thumbs up.
